Ships are protected from drone attacks through layers of awareness, threat assessment, tracking, communication and response—not one universal device. What those layers can do depends on the vessel: a naval warship may have integrated weapons and aviation systems, while commercial operators should follow current official maritime advisories and industry guidance rather than assume military capabilities are available to them.

What does “layered defense” mean at sea?

A layered defense is a coordinated set of functions. A ship needs to become aware of a possible threat, assess and track it, communicate and make decisions, and use whatever response options its platform and rules allow. The details vary by ship and operating circumstances; public sources do not establish one standard equipment set or engagement sequence for every vessel.

The U.S. Navy’s description of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Surface Warfare Mission Package illustrates the naval model: it combines guns, missiles and aviation systems, and describes capabilities for rapid detection, tracking and prosecution of threats, including counter-unmanned aerial system protection. That is a description of a particular naval mission package, not a specification for all warships or commercial ships.

What threats should ships account for?

“Drone attack” can refer to an unmanned aerial vehicle, but it is only one part of the maritime threat picture. The U.S. Maritime Administration’s 2025 advisory identifies one-way unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, unmanned surface and underwater vehicle attacks, ballistic and cruise missiles, small-arms fire from small boats, explosive-boat attacks, and illegal boardings, detentions or seizures among potential hostile actions in the regions it names.

A U.S. Department of Defense report dated 27 February 2024 described Houthi use of anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems on surface vessels, and a helicopter-borne seizure. It reported at least 48 attacks against commercial shipping and naval vessels since 19 November 2023, as of that report. This is a historical count limited to the report date, not a current total.

How do commercial ships and warships differ?

Commercial vessels

Commercial operators should use current flag-state, company and regional maritime guidance. The UK Department for Transport’s 20 May 2024 publication, Countering drone threats to shipping, is aimed at the maritime industry and covers drone technologies, threats to vessels, mitigation options, counter-drone technology, and evaluating and selecting technology for maritime use.

The 2025 MARAD advisory directs operators to NAVCENT Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) guidance. These sources support an information- and guidance-led approach; they do not prescribe a universal route, onboard weapon, or tactical response. Decisions depend on the ship and voyage circumstances.

Naval warships

Warships may have integrated detection, command-and-control and weapon systems that are not established as available or suitable for merchant vessels. As a dated example, the UK Ministry of Defence reported on 21 January 2024 that HMS Diamond used Sea Viper missiles to shoot down multiple attack drones in the Red Sea. The announcement also described contracts intended to upgrade existing Aster 30 missiles and modify associated radar, command-and-control and combat-management systems. It illustrates a naval capability; it is not a recommendation or transferable solution for a commercial ship.

What can be compared—and what cannot?

Public descriptions support comparison by function and vessel context, but not a quantitative ranking of systems.

Context What the cited source establishes What it does not establish
Naval LCS Surface Warfare Mission Package The U.S. Navy describes a combination of guns, missiles and aviation systems for detection, tracking and prosecution, including counter-UAS protection. Specific detection distances, interception probabilities, weapon-use distances or applicability to other ships; not stated in the U.S. Navy platform description.
Commercial maritime operations UK Department for Transport industry guidance discusses threats, mitigation and technology evaluation; MARAD’s 2025 advisory points operators to NAVCENT NCAGS guidance. A universal commercial-vessel equipment set, prescribed response sequence or tactical route; not stated in the UK guidance or MARAD advisory.
HMS Diamond engagement The UK Ministry of Defence reported that the destroyer used Sea Viper to shoot down multiple attack drones in the Red Sea on 21 January 2024. Comparable system performance, cost per engagement or suitability for merchant ships; not stated in the Ministry of Defence announcement.

The sources do not provide comparable data on detection range, probability of interception, cost-effectiveness or effectiveness against particular drone types. A claim that one system is “best” would therefore go beyond what these public descriptions establish.

What should commercial operators do?

  1. Check current official advisories. Consult the latest MARAD and relevant regional maritime advisories for the operating area; advisory details and threat conditions can change.
  2. Consult the applicable guidance. Use NAVCENT NCAGS guidance where relevant, alongside flag-state and company procedures.
  3. Evaluate any technology in context. The UK Department for Transport guidance addresses evaluation and selection for maritime use. A system described for a naval vessel should not be assumed to work on, or be appropriate for, a commercial ship.
  4. Make decisions through the ship’s established processes. The public sources cited here do not set a route or tactical response for an individual voyage.
