You cannot shield an ordinary GPS receiver from a geomagnetic storm or configure it to make satellite signals immune. You can prepare for degraded positioning: check official space-weather alerts, avoid precision survey work during high ionospheric disturbance, and verify position data when errors could have serious consequences. For everyday navigation, keep a backup way to orient yourself and do not treat a GPS position as infallible.

What a geomagnetic storm can do to GPS

GPS signals pass through Earth’s ionosphere. Receivers normally estimate and correct for the delay this layer adds, but a geomagnetic storm can change the ionosphere’s electron content and create sharp variations in density. The receiver’s correction may then be less accurate, the signal path may change, and the reported position can become less reliable. In sufficiently disturbed conditions, a receiver may lose lock on satellite signals.

NOAA gives general comparisons, not guarantees for a specific device or location: in calm conditions, single-frequency GPS can provide position accuracy of a meter or less; during a severe space-weather storm, errors can rise to tens of meters or more. NOAA describes dual-frequency positioning as accurate to a few centimeters in the relevant ordinary comparison, but warns that severe ionospheric disturbance can still prevent satellite lock. See NOAA’s explanation of space weather and GPS systems.

Where storm effects may be strongest

NOAA says large storm-related increases in total electron content usually occur at high latitudes, though major storms can also affect mid-latitudes. The impact depends on the storm and location, so a storm alert does not mean every GPS user will experience the same error.

Near the magnetic equator, small-scale ionospheric irregularities can cause signal scintillation, often most severe just after sunset. NOAA distinguishes this natural day-night pattern from geomagnetic storms; equatorial scintillation is not itself evidence of a storm.

What to do before and during a storm

Check official conditions before relying on precise positioning

Consult current NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts and alerts before work where degraded positioning could matter. Conditions change, so check again close to the time of use. NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey specifically directs survey users to SWPC alerts when planning observations. Start with NOAA SWPC.

For everyday driving or walking, keep a practical backup

A storm does not guarantee GPS failure, and casual users generally cannot prevent ionospheric interference through a phone setting or accessory. If navigation becomes erratic, compare the displayed position with road signs, landmarks, or a physical map, and avoid making a risky maneuver based solely on a questionable location. For a trip where losing navigation would be consequential, plan a non-GPS way to orient or reach help.

For surveying, postpone observations when disturbance is high

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey advises avoiding GPS data collection during geomagnetic storms and says collection is generally best avoided during high ionospheric disturbance. Its OPUS guidance also warns that OPUS-RS may perform poorly or fail under high disturbance. Reschedule precision observations when conditions improve rather than assuming a post-processing service will correct storm effects. See the NOAA NGS OPUS overview.

For safety-critical operations, use the approved integrity and contingency procedures

Do not substitute consumer advice for the procedures governing aviation, maritime operations, emergency response, or critical infrastructure. GPS.gov reproduces U.S. Space-Based PNT Policy guidance: “GPS users must plan for potential signal loss and take reasonable steps to verify or authenticate the integrity of the received GPS data and ranging signal, especially in applications where even small degradations can result in loss of life.” The applicable verification and backup method depends on the operation. GPS.gov also notes that the U.S. government is investing in alternative positioning, navigation, and timing technologies to supplement GPS when satellite services are unavailable; that does not make one alternative suitable for every user. See GPS.gov’s resilience guidance.

Does a better GPS receiver protect you?

Dual-frequency receivers use two signal frequencies to better characterize ionospheric effects and reduce their impact on positioning calculations. That capability can help in precision GNSS work, but it is not storm immunity: NOAA warns that a highly disturbed ionosphere can still prevent satellite lock. A dual-frequency GNSS receiver or survey-grade GNSS receiver should therefore be chosen for the work’s accuracy and workflow requirements, not as a guarantee of service during a severe storm.

For any receiver choice, distinguish three questions: whether it supports dual-frequency correction, whether the job requires survey-grade precision, and whether the operation has a separate alternate-PNT procedure. None establishes that the equipment will remain usable in severe disturbance. NOAA’s GPS and space-weather overview and NGS OPUS guidance explain these limits.

What not to rely on

  • A receiver setting that blocks storm effects: ordinary users cannot configure away ionospheric disturbance.
  • Dual frequency as a guarantee: it can improve ionospheric correction, but severe conditions may still cause loss of lock.
  • A universal backup device or service: alternate PNT depends on the equipment, location, and operating procedure; no single option is established here for all users.
  • A storm alert as a local failure prediction: alerts indicate space-weather conditions, not a certainty that a particular receiver will fail at a particular place.
