To get a clear architecture diagram from Claude Code, specify its purpose and audience, define the system boundary and level of detail, choose a notation and output format, set naming rules and a save path, and ask Claude Code to verify the result against repository evidence. Have it inspect relevant files first and label uncertain details as assumptions rather than inventing components or connections.

What to specify in your prompt

Anthropic’s general prompting advice is to give clear, explicit instructions, define the desired output and constraints, and use ordered steps when sequence or completeness matters. Its guidance is not specific to architecture diagrams, so treat the checklist below as a practical application of those principles—not as an Anthropic-prescribed diagram method. Anthropic’s prompting documentation says, “Claude responds well to clear, explicit instructions.” Read Anthropic’s prompting best practices.

  • Purpose and audience: State who will use the diagram and the question it should answer, such as how requests move through a service or which systems store customer data.
  • Scope and boundary: Name the applications, services, data stores, and external dependencies to include. Say what is out of scope so the diagram does not grow into an unreadable map of the entire repository.
  • Level of detail: Specify whether to show major services and connections or internal components and flows. If one view would be crowded, request separate diagrams for distinct questions.
  • Notation and format: Choose the notation and file format your team can review and render. Anthropic’s cited documentation does not recommend a particular architecture notation.
  • Consistency rules: Define component naming, grouping, system boundaries, arrow direction, and relationship labels. Use repository names consistently unless you explicitly ask for reader-friendly labels.
  • Evidence and uncertainty: Ask Claude Code to inspect relevant source files and configuration, and distinguish findings from assumptions. It should flag missing evidence instead of fabricating a component or connection.
  • Delivery and review: Specify where to save the artifact and what checks to perform, including coverage of in-scope components, accurate names, labeled connections, and readability at the intended viewing size.

Use a prompt that separates inspection, drawing, and review

This template combines Anthropic’s general prompting advice with a practical architecture-diagram workflow. It is an editorial template, not an Anthropic-validated prompt. Replace the bracketed text with details for your repository and team.

Inspect this repository before creating an architecture diagram. First identify the relevant applications, services, data stores, external systems, and connections from source files and configuration. Create a [diagram purpose or view] for [audience] that answers [reader question]. Include [scope] and exclude [out-of-scope items]. Use [chosen notation] and save the result as [file format] at [path]. Follow these naming, grouping, boundary, and relationship-label rules: [rules]. Do not invent components or connections: mark uncertain items as assumptions and list what evidence is missing. After drafting, check that every in-scope component is represented, names match the repository, connections have clear directions and labels, and the diagram remains readable at the intended viewing size. Summarize assumptions and unresolved questions.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep each instruction concrete. If you have a reference diagram that demonstrates the format you want, include it or describe its conventions; Anthropic’s general guidance recommends relevant, structured examples when they help show the desired output.

Keep stable diagram conventions in CLAUDE.md

For conventions that should carry across tasks, document them in the repository’s CLAUDE.md. Anthropic describes this file as a project-memory location for shared instructions and lists project architecture and coding conventions among its uses. It recommends specific, organized instructions and reviewing them as a project changes. See Anthropic’s memory guidance.

Useful persistent rules include your chosen notation, component naming, grouping and boundary conventions, arrow semantics, preferred detail level, default diagram location, and review checklist. Keep the task prompt responsible for the view’s audience, question, and scope: those details can differ from one diagram to another. The distinction between lasting team conventions and task-specific context is a workflow recommendation, not a Claude Code requirement.

Choose an output format and verify the rendered artifact

State both the notation and file extension in the prompt, then open the saved artifact in the renderer or tool your team uses. Claude Code’s CLI reference documents print-mode response formats such as text, JSON, and stream JSON; those describe CLI responses, not guaranteed support for a diagram notation or proof that a generated diagram file will render correctly. Check Anthropic’s CLI reference.

Review the rendered diagram against the task’s requirements: does it answer the stated question, stay within the requested boundary, use consistent names and symbols, label relationships, distinguish repository-backed facts from assumptions, and remain readable? Treat Claude Code’s output as a draft to inspect—not a guarantee of architectural correctness or consistency.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish

The cited Anthropic pages offer general prompting guidance, CLI response-format details, and advice about shared project memory. They do not establish an officially recommended architecture-diagram notation, a diagram-specific Claude Code feature, or a measured success rate for this workflow. Choose notation based on your team’s needs and verify any syntax-specific instructions against the current documentation for that format.
