You can estimate a tennis match’s changing win probability from its score without tracking every point. Start with a pre-match strength estimate, then update it from the completed sets and—if available—the games in the current set, using the match’s actual format and tiebreak rules. The result is a score-conditioned projection, not a point-by-point model or a guarantee of the winner.
What a score-only projection can tell you
A pre-match estimate reflects the players’ expected strength before play. The live score changes the probability of winning from that point onward: a player who has taken a set has improved their position, but the score alone does not reveal every factor affecting play.
How often the estimate can change depends on the feed. With set scores only, it updates when a set is complete. With game scores, it can update within a set. Neither view reveals the current server, point score, or how well each player is serving in the match, so a score-only projection is less detailed than a model with point-state data.
Build the estimate in five steps
-
Set a pre-match prior
Estimate each player’s underlying strength from historical results. Overall Elo and surface-specific Elo are defensible starting points. Depending on the model and available information, recent form, workload or fatigue, recency-weighted head-to-head results, and market-implied probability can also be considered; none is mandatory in every model.

A study of five Grand Slam tournaments from 2018 to 2020 found that betting odds performed relatively well, Elo variants performed well on several measures, and official rankings alone were comparatively weak in that sample. These findings support considering multiple sources of strength information, not treating odds as required or assuming the result generalizes to every tour or period. Read the study.

Identify the scoring format
Record whether the match is best-of-three or best-of-five, how sets are decided, and what tiebreak rules apply—including any special final-set rule or format variation. The same score can imply different match prospects under different rules. A live-forecasting paper describes how score state and tournament format shape the calculation. Read the paper.

Capture the score the feed actually provides
Track sets won and, if available, games won in the unfinished set. Do not treat a set-only feed as if it contained game or point information. If the feed omits current server and point score, the model cannot condition on them.

Condition on the observed score
The rigorous approach is a dynamic program over possible score states or a simulation that follows the match rules. A simpler set-only approximation can convert the pre-match estimate into a set-winning probability, then calculate the chance of winning the match from the sets still required. A game-score update needs an additional model of how games and sets unfold.

That conversion requires care: a match-level probability does not uniquely determine a player’s serve and return strengths or exact game-winning probabilities. If those ratings are unavailable, the model must state and validate its assumptions rather than present the conversion as exact.

Validate forecasts without leaking future information
Train on earlier matches and test on later ones, ideally using chronological or walk-forward validation. Do not feed a prediction information that would only be known after the match, such as final match statistics. Assess probability quality with calibration and a proper scoring rule such as log loss or Brier score, alongside winner accuracy. A forecast may often choose the winner yet still assign probabilities poorly. See an example of a published methodology.

Choose an update level that matches your data
| Approach | Data needed | How often it updates | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set-only updating | Completed set scores and match format | At set completion | Simplest to implement, but probability changes arrive in larger jumps and it ignores games within the unfinished set. |
| Game-score updating | Set scores and current games, plus a game/set probability model | As games are completed | Provides more frequent updates, but requires stronger assumptions or additional serve/return ratings. |
| Point-by-point updating | Point score, current server, and point-level probabilities or equivalent data | As points are played | Outside a score-only feed’s capabilities; it can use match-state detail unavailable to the other approaches. |
The point-level distinction matters when reading accuracy claims. A 2026 preprint by Charles Xie and Aneesh Muppidi evaluated a hybrid model using 8,222 Grand Slam matches and 1,505,355 point-state observations. It reports 77.84% accuracy across all points in its primary evaluation, with a 2023–2024 test window after training on 2011–2021 and validation on 2022. That is a result for a point-data model, not an expected accuracy for a score-only projection; the authors also say further real-time testing is needed. Read the preprint.

Look for the model’s data coverage, evaluation period, and validation design, not just a headline accuracy figure. Calibration asks whether events assigned a given probability occur at roughly that frequency over many forecasts. Log loss and Brier score evaluate probabilistic predictions, while accuracy counts winner calls and does not show whether the probabilities were sensible.

Quick Recap
Where score-only forecasts can mislead
- They do not observe point-level performance. A score-only feed cannot show who is serving now or how the players are performing on serve and return during the match.
- The score is not the whole forecast. The result depends on the strength prior and match rules as well as the current score.
- Unusual records need explicit handling. Walkovers, retirements, incomplete records, format changes, and unusual scoring rules can distort training data or live calculations. A model should explain whether and how it handles them.
- Precision should match the inputs. A detailed-looking percentage does not mean the model has point-level information. Report it as conditional on the known score and the model’s assumptions.
