AWS Lambda can run FFmpeg for short, bounded user-generated video jobs—such as clipping, rewrapping, or a preprocessing step—but it is not a universal transcoding engine. An ordinary Lambda invocation can run for at most 900 seconds, and its memory and temporary storage are finite. Use realistic, upper-bound files to test runtime and working-space needs; choose EFS for larger custom FFmpeg jobs or evaluate MediaConvert for managed, multi-output video workflows.

When Lambda and FFmpeg are a good fit

Think of Lambda as a way to run a focused media-processing step in response to an event, often when a user uploads a file to Amazon S3. It is a reasonable candidate when the job is finite, its resource requirements are predictable, and a test with large, representative inputs finishes comfortably within Lambda’s limits.

AWS’s article “Processing user-generated content using AWS Lambda and FFmpeg,” published December 18, 2020, describes using Lambda memory to avoid writing the whole media file to local temporary storage. Its demonstrated example converts variable-frame-rate audio to constant-frame-rate audio. AWS also lists rewrapping media into another container or format, clipping media, and adding a slate, black frames, or a waveform video stream to audio-only media as possible examples. These are examples of tasks to evaluate, not guarantees that a particular input, codec, or file size will fit.

  • Consider Lambda: a bounded preprocessing operation, a short clip, or a small number of predictable transformations.
  • Consider EFS with Lambda: custom FFmpeg processing that needs shared filesystem access or files larger than a practical in-memory or local-storage design can handle. EFS adds networking, storage workflow, and service-management considerations.
  • Consider MediaConvert: managed file-based transcoding, especially when you need a broader VOD workflow, multiple output formats, or capabilities such as adaptive bitrate packaging, captions, DRM, or broadcast-oriented features.

The options are not mutually exclusive. Lambda can handle orchestration, validation, or pre- and post-processing around a MediaConvert job.

Know Lambda’s current resource limits

For ordinary Lambda functions, AWS documents a configurable timeout from 1 second up to 900 seconds (15 minutes), with a default of 3 seconds. Memory is configurable from 128 MB to 10,240 MB. AWS documents that 1,769 MB corresponds to the equivalent of one vCPU, and CPU allocation increases with configured memory. That relationship does not predict FFmpeg throughput: codec, filters, input characteristics, and the FFmpeg build all matter.

Lambda’s /tmp ephemeral storage defaults to 512 MB and can be configured from 512 MB to 10,240 MB in 1 MB increments. AWS describes it as unique to each execution environment, temporary, and encrypted at rest with an AWS-managed key. If you stage files there, account for inputs, outputs, and intermediate files at the same time—not just the input file’s size.

These are documented Lambda limits as of October 3, 2026. AWS documentation also describes a 5,400-second exception for certain Lambda Managed Instances invocation configurations; do not treat that exception as the timeout for ordinary functions.

Design the upload-to-output workflow

  1. Keep source and result objects in storage. Store the original upload and the processed result in S3. Pass object identifiers to the function rather than treating Lambda’s execution environment as durable storage.
  2. Validate before invoking FFmpeg. Check that the uploaded object is present and that its size, media characteristics, and requested operation are within the job profile you have tested. Reject or route oversized and unsupported jobs rather than letting them run until timeout.
  3. Choose a data path deliberately. For an in-memory approach like the one in AWS’s 2020 article, budget for memory used by the media data and FFmpeg as well as the rest of the function. If you intentionally stage files locally, configure /tmp for the working set. If neither approach offers adequate headroom, evaluate EFS or a managed transcoding service.
  4. Run the narrowly scoped FFmpeg operation. Package the FFmpeg executable and its dependencies for the Lambda runtime and architecture you deploy. Validate the build’s codec and filter support against actual user files. Do not assume an arbitrary binary will work in Lambda.
  5. Write the result to S3 and record job status. Keep durable outputs outside the execution environment. Make the workflow’s success and failure states observable so the application can report a completed, rejected, or failed job.
  6. Test resource headroom before production. Measure transfer and processing time on realistic upper-bound files and quantities. Include dependent-service latency and the complete working set in tests, not only a small sample clip.

Configure timeout, memory, and temporary storage

Set timeout from measured worst-case behavior

Do not set the timeout close to an average run time and assume every job will finish. File size, transfer time, codec complexity, filters, and dependent-service latency can vary. Choose a limit based on realistic upper-bound tests, then leave room for variation. AWS’s timeout guidance says: “When testing your application, ensure that your tests accurately reflect the size and quantity of data and realistic parameter values.”

If the tested job approaches the 900-second ordinary-function maximum, reduce the work per invocation, split the workflow into bounded steps where appropriate, or move the transcoding work to a better-suited service. Increasing the timeout cannot extend Lambda beyond its documented cap.

Allocate memory based on both memory use and speed

More memory also increases the CPU allocation available to the function, so test multiple memory settings with the real FFmpeg workload. Compare completion time and resource use rather than inferring performance from the vCPU equivalence alone. The correct setting depends on your binary, codecs, filters, and inputs.

Budget the complete local working set

If processing uses /tmp, allow enough space for source data, output data, and any temporary or intermediate files that coexist. The current configurable maximum is 10,240 MB, not an indication that every job should stage files locally. AWS’s 2020 FFmpeg article refers to the then-current 512 MB temporary-storage limit; current Lambda documentation allows configurable storage up to 10,240 MB.

Package FFmpeg for Lambda

Lambda supports ZIP deployment packages subject to its package size limits, and container images up to 10 GB uncompressed. A container image provides more control over operating-system and runtime dependencies. For an OS-only or alternative base image, AWS requires a Lambda runtime interface client.

Whichever packaging route you choose, verify the executable’s architecture, linked libraries, codec support, and compatibility with the Lambda runtime. Build and test the exact artifact that will be deployed; a binary that works on a developer workstation may depend on libraries or system behavior absent from Lambda.

Protect user media and prevent duplicate work

  • Use least-privilege IAM permissions. Grant the function access only to the relevant input and output locations and actions it needs. Avoid broad access to unrelated buckets or objects.
  • Do not retain sensitive data in a reused environment. AWS Lambda best practices warns: “To avoid potential data leaks across invocations, don’t use the execution environment to store user data, events, or other information with security implications.” Treat an execution environment as reusable, not as a private per-user workspace.
  • Plan queue visibility for the job duration. For queue-triggered jobs, AWS says expected invocation time should not exceed the queue’s visibility timeout, to avoid duplicate invocations. Account for processing time and realistic variation when setting that relationship.
  • Load-test concurrency as well as a single job. Runtime variation can affect timeout and concurrency behavior. Test expected upload bursts and failure paths, not just one successful invocation.

When to use a broader video workflow

AWS’s Video on Demand guidance describes a managed workflow using S3 for source and output files; Step Functions to orchestrate; Lambda for workflow steps and error handling; MediaConvert for transcoding; DynamoDB for metadata; CloudWatch for logs and event rules; SNS for notifications; and CloudFront for delivery. The guidance also mentions optional MediaPackage and an SQS queue for outputs.

MediaConvert is the more natural service to evaluate when the job is managed, file-based transcoding across a video library or multiple delivery outputs. Its user guide covers service-managed job settings, templates, and queues, along with advanced broadcast, audio, captions, DRM, and adaptive-bitrate capabilities. Lambda can still validate an upload or coordinate work around a MediaConvert job.

Common failures and how to diagnose them

The function times out

Check the actual duration for upper-bound files, including transfers and dependencies. A timeout near average runtime leaves little room for variation. Increase memory and retest if CPU or memory allocation is constraining the job; if the work still approaches the 900-second cap, split the task or choose a different processing path.

FFmpeg reports a missing codec, library, or executable

Confirm the deployed artifact—not just the local build—contains the executable and required libraries, targets the correct architecture, and supports the input codec and requested filters. Rebuild and test the exact ZIP or container image that Lambda will run.

The job runs out of memory or temporary space

Determine whether the design keeps media in memory or writes it to /tmp. Measure peak working-set needs, including overlapping input, output, and intermediate data. Adjust memory or ephemeral storage within Lambda’s limits, or evaluate EFS or MediaConvert if the tested job does not fit.

The same queued job runs more than once

Check the queue’s visibility timeout against the expected invocation time and investigate whether processing can exceed that window. AWS advises that expected invocation time should not exceed the visibility timeout. Make the workflow’s handling of repeated work safe, and test failure and retry behavior.

Results or user data appear to persist unexpectedly

Do not treat a reused execution environment as a per-user boundary. Keep durable files in controlled storage, limit IAM access, and avoid leaving sensitive user data in memory or local files for later invocations.

Cost and operational trade-offs

The available AWS documentation does not establish that Lambda plus FFmpeg is cheaper than MediaConvert for a given workload. Compare actual AWS charges using your invocation frequency, memory and duration, data movement and storage, output requirements, and any additional services. Include the engineering and operational work of packaging, updating, monitoring, and supporting FFmpeg. A managed service may reduce that work, but its fit and cost still depend on the job profile.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your end goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than build a user-upload processing pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
