To favor a program when your computer schedules competing work, change its process priority using the controls available in your operating system. Priority changes a program’s relative scheduling preference; they do not create more CPU capacity, guarantee a CPU percentage, or cap how much CPU a program can use.
What CPU priority changes—and what it does not
The operating system schedules work from multiple programs to share the CPU. A higher scheduling priority can favor a program over competing work, but it does not reserve a fixed share of processor time. The result depends on what else is running and what the system is doing.
Priority also is not a CPU limit. If you want to restrict an app to a maximum percentage, the priority controls described here are not the right setting. And if an app is waiting on disk, network, or memory activity, changing CPU priority may not solve its slowdown. Microsoft cautions in its SetPriorityClass documentation that “it is not sufficient to adjust the CPU scheduling priority” for background work involving file I/O, network I/O, or data processing.
Start by checking what is using system resources
Before changing a process’s priority, identify whether CPU use is actually the bottleneck. Microsoft recommends opening Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, reviewing resource use, and closing apps you are not using. If the slowdown comes from disk, memory, or another resource, a CPU scheduling change may have little effect.

Windows 11 also has a system-wide power setting called Best performance. Microsoft describes it for situations where maximum performance is needed and power is available; it can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make a device warmer. This is a power mode, not a way to prioritize one program. See Microsoft’s Windows power-mode guidance.
Choose the method for your operating system
| Operating system | Control covered here | Target | Priority meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | SetPriorityClass API |
Process priority class | Changes CPU scheduling priority; not a CPU quota |
| Linux | nice or renice |
New command, or running process, process group, or user | Lower nice values are more favorable; higher values are less favorable |
| macOS 13.6.5 | renice utility documented in that release’s manual |
Running process, including by process ID | Scheduling priority; check the installed release’s manual for supported flags and permissions |
Windows: process priority classes
Microsoft documents SetPriorityClass as an API for setting a process priority class. Its API reference explains that these classes affect CPU scheduling priority. Microsoft’s scheduling priorities overview describes how threads run according to scheduling priority and points developers to GetPriorityClass and SetPriorityClass to inspect and adjust a process class.

These are documented programming interfaces, not a guaranteed set of current Task Manager clicks. The available process controls can depend on the Windows edition and build, and protected or system processes may not expose the same options. If you need a graphical method, confirm the exact steps and available settings on the Windows version you use rather than assuming every system has identical controls.
Linux: set priority when starting a command
Use nice to launch a command with an adjusted nice value. Linux documents a range from -20 (most favorable) to 19 (least favorable). For example:

nice -n 10 command
Replace command with the program or command you want to run. A value of 10 makes the process less favored relative to work with a lower nice value; it does not assign a particular CPU share. The Linux nice(1) manual documents the command and range.
Linux: change priority for a running process
Use renice when the program is already running. The following example makes the process with the specified process ID less favored:

renice --priority 10 -p PID
Replace PID with the actual process ID. By default, renice targets process IDs; it can also target process groups or users with the relevant options. The Linux renice(1) manual explains that priority is an absolute value by default, with relative behavior available through options.
Permission matters: ordinary users are restricted in the changes they can request, and making a process more favored can require suitable privileges or a suitable nice resource limit. Check man renice on your system, since behavior and privilege policy can vary by environment.

macOS: use renice only with release-specific checks
The cited macOS 13.6.5 renice manual page documents renice as a utility for changing scheduling priority, including by process ID. Because that reference is specific to macOS 13.6.5, verify the available flags and permissions against the manual for your installed macOS release. The cited documentation does not establish a current Activity Monitor priority control, so do not assume that interface provides one.
Quick Recap
When raising priority is restricted or does not help
- The system refuses the change: Your account may not have permission to make that priority adjustment. On Linux, consult
man reniceand your system’s privilege policy. - The app remains slow: Check whether the bottleneck is disk, memory, network, or another resource instead of CPU scheduling.
- Other work becomes less responsive: A scheduling preference favors one process relative to competing work; it does not add processor capacity. Avoid raising priority without a specific reason.
- A laptop gets warmer or loses charge faster: This can be associated with Windows 11’s Best performance power mode, which is separate from changing one process’s priority.
