wkhtmltopdf does not print duplex pages itself. It converts HTML into a PDF. To produce physical two-sided pages, run wkhtmltopdf, open or submit the resulting PDF to your operating system’s print workflow, and enable two-sided or duplex printing if the selected printer and driver provide that option.
What wkhtmltopdf can—and cannot—do
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line tool that renders HTML into PDF (and related image formats) with the Qt WebKit rendering engine. Its command line controls the document that is created: paper size, orientation, margins, grayscale output, copies in the PDF, and other rendering choices.
The documented 0.12.6 usage manual does not list a duplex or two-sided printing switch. That distinction matters: duplex is a property of the physical print job, not of the PDF file. A PDF can be prepared for double-sided output, but the printer or print system must perform the front-and-back operation.
The complete duplex workflow
- Prepare the HTML. Confirm that the source contains the content and print styles you expect. If the document has a specific paper target, decide that before conversion.
- Convert HTML to PDF. From a shell, run:
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf- Inspect the PDF. Check page count, page breaks, margins, and whether the page size and orientation match the paper loaded in the printer.
- Open the PDF in a print application. Use your desktop PDF viewer, print server, or operating-system print command.
- Select the printer and duplex mode. In the printer properties or print dialog, choose the control labelled Two-sided, Duplex, Print on both sides, or an equivalent label. The exact wording depends on the driver and operating system.
- Choose the binding edge when offered. Long-edge binding is normally used for portrait pages that turn like a book; short-edge binding is used when the reverse side should flip over the top. Select the edge that matches how the finished document will be read.
- Print a small check first. For an unfamiliar printer, print a short sample and verify that the reverse side is upright and in the expected page order before sending a large job.
If the dialog has no two-sided control, the selected printer or driver may not support automatic duplex. Follow the printer’s own instructions for manual two-sided printing; reload direction and page-selection rules vary by model, so there is no universal wkhtmltopdf command for that step.

Set PDF layout before printing
Layout options affect how content fits on each sheet, but none of them turns on duplex printing. Set them during conversion, then make the matching choices in the print dialog.

For example, to create an A4 portrait PDF with explicit margins, keep the conversion and physical-print decisions separate:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Portrait --margin-top 15mm --margin-right 15mm --margin-bottom 15mm --margin-left 15mm input.html output.pdfThe command creates a PDF with those layout settings. You still select duplex when printing output.pdf.
Verify the PDF before wasting paper
- Check paper size. If the PDF is A4 but the printer is loaded with another size, page scaling or clipping can occur.
- Check orientation. Portrait and landscape change where the reverse side appears relative to the binding edge.
- Check margins and page breaks. A layout that looks correct on screen can place headings or tables too close to a printer’s unprintable edge.
- Check the page count. Duplex printing uses two pages per sheet, but a page count that is odd is not an error; the final sheet simply has one printed side unless you add a deliberate blank page.
- Check the PDF itself, not only the HTML preview. The PDF is the file the print workflow receives.
Automatic versus manual duplex printing
Automatic duplex
An automatic-duplex printer has hardware that turns or feeds each sheet for the second side. Select its two-sided option in the print workflow, choose long- or short-edge binding when available, and let the driver sequence the pages.

Manual two-sided printing
With a printer that has no duplex unit, the print system may ask you to print one side, reload the stack, and print the other side. The correct page range and reload orientation are model-dependent. Use the printer documentation rather than trying to encode the procedure in wkhtmltopdf; wkhtmltopdf only creates the PDF.
When duplex is unavailable
If the printer and driver expose no automatic or manual two-sided workflow, wkhtmltopdf cannot add one. You can still generate the PDF, but the available physical output is determined by the printer hardware and its software.
Common problems and fixes
“I need a wkhtmltopdf duplex flag.”
The 0.12.6 manual does not document one. Remove the assumption that conversion and printing are the same operation: create the PDF first, then set duplex in the print workflow.
The two-sided checkbox is missing
Confirm that the intended printer is selected, then inspect its properties or driver settings. Duplex availability is device- and workflow-dependent. If it remains absent, consult the printer instructions for manual two-sided output.

The reverse side is upside down
Change the binding edge. Long-edge and short-edge duplexing rotate the back side differently; choose the edge that matches the document’s reading direction.
Pages are clipped or unexpectedly scaled
Compare the PDF’s --page-size and --orientation choices with the paper loaded and the print dialog’s scaling setting. Recheck margins and print a one- or two-page sample.
Copies behave differently than expected
The manual’s --copies option concerns copies in the output PDF; it is not a duplex control. Decide how many physical sets you need in the print workflow as well.
Your installed build behaves differently
The cited manual identifies wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 with patched Qt. Distributions and other builds can differ, so check the version and the local wkhtmltopdf --extended-help output before relying on an option. An option appearing in a vendor-specific build still does not make the printer duplex-capable.

- Run the HTML-to-PDF command and record the wkhtmltopdf version.
- Confirm page size, orientation, margins, page count, and page breaks in the PDF viewer.
- Select the actual duplex-capable printer, not a generic or virtual printer.
- Choose two-sided mode and the correct binding edge.
- Print a short sample for a new printer, driver, paper size, or orientation.
- For manual duplex, follow the printer’s reload and page-range instructions exactly.
Bottom line
Use wkhtmltopdf to create a correctly sized and oriented PDF, then enable duplex at print time. There is no documented duplex command-line option in the wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 manual, and the printer/driver—not the converter—determines whether two-sided pages are possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can wkhtmltopdf add a blank page so every sheet has two printed sides?
It can create whatever page content your HTML and layout produce, but adding or omitting a blank page is a document-design decision. It does not enable the printer’s duplex mechanism.
Does landscape orientation disable duplex printing?
No. Landscape changes the PDF’s page geometry; whether duplex is available and how the reverse side rotates remains a printer and driver decision.
Should I use wkhtmltopdf’s –copies option for multiple physical sets?
No. Treat –copies as an output-PDF setting and set the number of physical sets in the print workflow.
