In Microsoft Word, choose File > Print > Print One Sided > Manually Print on Both Sides if that option is available. Otherwise, print odd pages first and even pages second. The right way to reload the stack depends on your printer, so test with a few pages before printing the whole document.
Print a short test before the full document
Manual duplex printing uses two passes. The printer prints one face of each sheet; you then put those sheets back into the input tray so the second pass prints on the blank faces. The printer’s feed path determines which side should face up and which edge should enter first.
- Check your printer’s instructions. Look up the model’s manual or manufacturer support page for manual two-sided printing. Directions can differ by printer, driver, and tray.
- Prepare a two- or four-page test. If the feed direction is unclear, mark the top edge and printed face of a test sheet so you can track how it moves through the printer.
- Print the test and reload the sheets. Follow the model-specific instructions for flipping, rotating, or reordering the stack.
- Check both sides. Confirm that pages are in the right order and upright, and that the reverse side printed on the intended face. Adjust how you reload the stack if needed.
Do not assume that a printer takes paper face-up or face-down because another model does; manufacturers document different feed paths and reload directions. Microsoft also recommends testing the odd/even reload method for the specific printer: Microsoft’s Word duplex-printing instructions.
Print manually from Microsoft Word
Use Word’s prompted manual-duplex option
In Word, open File > Print. Under Print One Sided, choose Manually Print on Both Sides if it appears. Word prints the first sides, pauses, and prompts you to turn and re-feed the stack. Follow the prompt and your printer’s loading instructions.

Use odd and even pages if the option is missing
- In Word’s print settings, select Only Print Odd Pages and print.
- Reload the printed sheets according to the printer’s instructions. Depending on the feed path, you may need to flip, rotate, or reorder the stack.
- Select Only Print Even Pages and print the second pass.
- Check page order and orientation before printing a long document.
For Word for Mac, Microsoft likewise describes printing odd pages, turning and reinserting the stack, and printing even pages. Some printer models may require rotating or reordering the pages: Microsoft’s Word for Mac instructions.
Reload the stack for your printer’s feed path
There is no universal reload direction. The printer’s tray design, paper path, and the binding edge you want all affect how the stack must be turned and fed.

Epson front-feed and rear-feed printers
Epson’s manual two-sided instructions distinguish front-feed from rear-feed models. For front-feed models, the cited procedure turns ImagePrint Last Page First on for the odd-page pass and off for the even-page pass, then rotates the sheets and loads them top-edge first. For rear-feed models, that setting stays off for both passes and the stack is flipped differently. If the total page count is odd, a final page may remain in the feeder; Epson says to remove it when printing finishes. HP top-loading and bottom-loading trays
HP’s cited instructions distinguish bottom-loading trays, where printed sheets are reloaded printed-side up, from top-loading trays, where they are reloaded printed-side down. The edge that goes in first also varies with long-edge or short-edge binding. Use the illustrations and directions for your exact model: HP manual two-sided printing instructions.

A separate HP laser procedure specifies reloading printed pages printed-side down and top-edge first. That direction applies to the procedure described there; it is not a universal rule for HP printers: HP laser printer instructions.
Choose the binding edge and check paper compatibility
For pages that read like a book, use long-edge binding; for pages that turn over the top like a tablet, use short-edge binding. The binding choice affects how the back pages are oriented, but the reload steps still depend on the printer’s feed path. Follow the model’s instructions for both the binding edge and the paper stack.

Use paper supported by your printer. HP warns that its cited procedure should not be used with envelopes, photo or glossy paper, transparencies, or paper lighter than 60 g/m² (16 lb) or heavier than 105 g/m² (28 lb), because of possible jams or printer damage. Those limits are HP guidance for the cited instructions, not a universal specification; check your printer’s documentation for the paper types and weights it supports: HP’s media guidance.

- Back pages are upside down: Change how you rotate or flip the stack, or check whether the document should use long-edge or short-edge binding.
- Pages appear in the wrong sequence: The printer or driver may need a different odd/even order or reverse-page setting. Check the model-specific instructions; Epson’s front-feed and rear-feed procedures, for example, use different page-order settings.
- The wrong side is printed: Recheck whether the tray takes paper face-up or face-down, then adjust the reload orientation.
- A page remains in the feeder after an odd-page document: Check the output and remove any remaining sheet when printing has ended, as Epson directs for its procedure.
After changing the printer, driver, or tray, run another short test before printing a long document.
