To print a website without pictures, use a simplified or reader view when your browser offers one, then confirm the result in Print Preview. Firefox can print a page in Simplified format, which removes clutter and background images. Microsoft Edge can omit background graphics and can print from Immersive Reader. Chrome’s Reading mode works only on supported pages and is not documented as a universal way to remove every inline image. Safari instructions vary by device and operating-system version, so use its current print preview and reader features rather than assuming a single menu path.
First identify what you want to remove
“Pictures” can mean two different things:
- Background graphics: decorative backgrounds, textures, and CSS images behind the page.
- Inline images: photographs, illustrations, logos, and images embedded in the article content.
A browser option that turns off background graphics may leave inline photographs untouched. A reader or simplified view usually removes more page furniture, but it is available only when the site can be converted successfully. Always treat the preview as the final authority: web pages can deliberately use a different print layout from their screen layout.
Firefox: use Simplified format or Reader View
Print with the Simplified format
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Print….
- Expand More settings.
- Under Format settings, select Simplified.
- Inspect the preview. The simplified version strips clutter such as buttons, advertisements, and background images.
- Choose the pages, scale, margins, color mode, and destination you need, then print or choose Save to PDF.
Simplified is not offered for every page. Firefox also omits the format choices when a simplified version is unavailable or when Reader View was already enabled before printing. When Simplified is selected, Firefox’s print help says you cannot also select Print backgrounds, because the simplified output is intended to omit them.
Use Reader View before opening print
If a Reader View icon appears in Firefox’s address bar, select it first. The page is reconstructed as a reading-focused document; then open the Firefox menu, choose Print…, and check the preview. Reader View is site-dependent, so a page without the icon cannot use this route.

Microsoft Edge: disable backgrounds or print from Immersive Reader
Turn off background graphics
- Open the page in Edge.
- Choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings.
- Clear Background graphics.
- Check the preview and select the required pages, scale, color, paper, and destination.
This setting concerns webpage backgrounds. It does not promise to remove every ordinary inline photograph or logo.
Use Immersive Reader for a cleaner document
When the address bar offers Immersive Reader, open it (on Windows, F9 may open it when available), then print from that view. Immersive Reader is not available for all websites. If the control is absent, use the background-graphics setting and preview instead.
Print only a selected portion
Edge also documents printing a selection. Select the text or images you want, right-click the selection, and choose Print. This is useful when you need one text section and can leave image-heavy sections out, but it is not the same as automatically removing pictures from the selected content.
Google Chrome: what Reading mode can and cannot do
- Open the page and start Chrome’s print flow from the browser menu or your operating system’s print command.
- Choose the destination and adjust the available print settings.
- Review every preview page for remaining images.
Chrome’s Reading mode appears only on supported pages. Google’s description applies Reading mode to the text shown in that mode; the official material does not establish a print-dialog switch that removes all inline pictures. If images remain, try the site’s Reading mode if offered, or open the page in Firefox Simplified or Edge Immersive Reader when those features are available.

Safari and other browsers
Safari’s exact controls depend on the Apple device and operating-system version. Do not rely on a generic Safari menu path: open the current reader or print controls for your version, then verify the preview. If no reader-style output is offered, you can still select only the pages you need, reduce scale, choose black-and-white where supported, or save a PDF for further editing.
Use Print Preview as a decision checklist
- Are photographs still visible? You probably disabled only backgrounds, not inline images. Switch to a reader or simplified view if the site provides one.
- Did the page become empty or lose required text? The site’s simplified parser may not support that layout. Return to the normal page and print selected pages or a selection.
- Are ads, buttons, or chat panels present? Reader or simplified output is more appropriate than a background-only setting.
- Do you need fewer sheets rather than fewer images? Select page ranges, reduce scale, adjust margins, or save to PDF first.
- Is color unnecessary? Choose black-and-white or grayscale if your printer dialog provides it. This is a printer setting, not a guarantee that images have been removed.
Look at every page in the preview, not just the first one. Headers, footers, sidebars, and images can appear only on later pages.
When a page’s print layout differs from its screen layout
A website can define a separate print stylesheet. It may hide navigation, move columns, replace an image with a text label, or reflow content across pages. Mozilla’s Firefox help explains that web pages can set themselves up to appear differently on paper than on screen, so changes in the preview are expected. This is why a screenshot of the screen is not a reliable prediction of the printed result.
Removing persistent inline images without a built-in reader view
Prefer a supported reader view
Reader and simplified modes are the least fragile option because they let the browser rebuild the article. Availability is determined by the individual page, not merely by the browser brand.

Print a selection or selected pages
If you only need the written instructions, select the relevant text where the browser supports selection printing, or use the preview’s page-range control to exclude image-heavy pages. This avoids changing the page itself.
Save to PDF for a second pass
Choose Save to PDF in the print destination when you need to inspect or edit the document before using paper. The PDF still reflects the browser’s preview; saving it does not automatically delete inline images.
Do not confuse blocked loading with clean removal
Blocking images with an extension or network rule can also remove logos, icons, or layout elements that the article needs. It may leave empty spaces or broken placeholders. For a one-off print job, a reader view and preview are easier to undo and verify.

Is saving as PDF different from printing?
It changes the destination, not the page-removal rules. The PDF records what the browser preview produces, so inspect it before sending it to a printer.
