To print a website image as a poster on ordinary paper, open the image by itself, save or print it to a PDF, then open that PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader and choose Print → Poster under Page Sizing & Handling. Set the tile scale and overlap, check the preview, and print without adding a second “Fit” or “Shrink” adjustment in the printer dialog.
1. Open just the image—not the whole webpage
Printing the webpage directly can include navigation, ads, or a responsive version of the image that is smaller or cropped. In Firefox, right-click the image and choose Open Image in New Tab. For an image used as a page background, use View Background Image if that option is available. The image then appears on its own, ready to save or print. Firefox’s print help describes its print workflow and settings.
If you do not use Firefox, look for the browser’s equivalent option to open or save the image itself. Menu wording differs across browsers and versions. If the image is part of a gallery, choose the largest available original rather than a small thumbnail; enlarging a thumbnail can make the printed result look soft.
2. Save a stable file to tile
A PDF gives the poster-printing step a fixed page to divide across sheets. From the image’s own tab, use the browser’s print command and select Save to PDF as the destination, if available. Alternatively, save the image file and use an application that can place it on a PDF page. Before saving or printing, check the paper size and orientation. A portrait page can waste space or crop the image if the source is wide.

Firefox’s print settings include paper size, scale, margins, pages per sheet, output format, two-sided printing, and background controls in More settings. For a direct image print, inspect the preview to ensure the image is present and oriented as intended. Do not confuse the browser’s pages-per-sheet setting with poster tiling: pages per sheet places multiple document pages on one sheet, while poster tiling divides one large page across multiple sheets.
3. Tile the PDF with Acrobat Poster printing
Open the saved PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Choose Print, then find Page Sizing & Handling and select Poster. Adobe describes Poster printing as splitting a large page across multiple sheets. Labels can vary slightly by Acrobat release, so use the print preview and look for the Poster tiling controls. Choose the tile scale
Tile Scale controls the size of the finished image relative to the PDF page. At 100%, Acrobat tiles the page at its existing size; a larger percentage enlarges the poster and usually increases the number of sheets, while a smaller percentage reduces both. If you have a target finished dimension, adjust the percentage deliberately and check the preview rather than relying on a guessed sheet count. The necessary number of pages depends on the source page dimensions, target scale, paper size, orientation, printer margins, and overlap.

Set overlap and assembly aids
Overlap repeats a strip of image on adjoining sheets. A modest overlap makes it easier to align the pages and helps account for the area your printer cannot print near its edges. Where available, select Cut marks to show trim guides and Labels to identify the tiles. The preview should update to show the layout and sheet count. Adobe’s poster workflow explains these controls in its Poster printing guide.

Check the preview before committing paper
Use the preview to confirm that the image is not rotated unexpectedly, that the poster fits the intended number of sheets, and that no important part is missing at the edges. Change paper size or orientation if the layout wastes sheets or clips the image. The preview is the dependable way to see Acrobat’s calculated tile count for your actual file; there is no universal page count for every poster.
4. Print at the intended size
When you want the size specified by Acrobat’s tile scale, avoid applying another scaling operation in the printer driver. Select Actual size or the equivalent, rather than Fit, Shrink oversized pages, or a similar option. The precise printer-dialog labels vary by operating system and driver. If both Acrobat and the printer driver scale the page, the assembled poster can end up smaller than expected.

Printer margins matter, too: Microsoft notes that all desktop printers have a nonprinting region at the margins. That is one reason to include overlap instead of expecting edge-to-edge printing. If the poster must have precise physical dimensions, check the resulting print with a ruler before assembling the entire set.
5. Assemble the tiled poster
- Arrange the printed sheets in the row-and-column order shown by Acrobat’s labels or preview.
- Compare the repeated image strips in the overlap and align the neighboring pages.
- Trim only the edges needed for clean seams, using cut marks as guides when provided. Avoid trimming both overlapping edges unless your layout requires it.
- Join the sheets from the back with removable tape, checking alignment as you work across each row and then between rows.
Microsoft’s poster workflow also provides horizontal and vertical overlap settings and notes the nonprinting margin constraint in its large-format publication guidance. If you need one seamless oversized sheet rather than a tiled assembly, a print shop with large-format equipment may be a better fit.

Which printing method should you use?

Troubleshooting common problems
The printout contains the webpage or crops the image
Return to the browser and open the image itself in a new tab, rather than printing the page around it. If the source is a thumbnail or a responsive preview, find and save the full-size image where possible. Then recreate the PDF from that image and inspect its orientation and page size before tiling.
The poster is smaller than expected
Check both Acrobat’s Tile Scale and the printer dialog’s scaling choice. Set the intended scale in Acrobat and disable additional fit or shrink adjustments in the printer driver. Recheck the preview and, for exact sizing, measure a test print before using the full set of sheets.

Important image content is missing at an edge
Inspect the PDF page and Acrobat’s tile preview for clipping or an unexpected crop. Try changing the PDF orientation or paper size, and confirm that the original image was not already cropped. Remember that a desktop printer’s nonprinting margins can leave blank edges; use overlap to provide material for aligning or trimming seams.
The number of sheets is surprising
Acrobat calculates the count from the page dimensions, tile scale, chosen paper, orientation, and overlap. A larger scale or overlap can change how the layout falls across the sheets. Review the preview, then adjust scale, paper size, orientation, or overlap to balance poster dimensions against sheet use.
The menus do not match these instructions
Adobe and printer-driver labels can differ between releases and operating systems. Look for the Poster option within the page-sizing or print-handling controls, then use the preview to verify the tiling. In Firefox, image-opening and print-setting names can also vary; the key is to print the image tab rather than the full webpage.
