In Chrome, turn off Background graphics in print preview to omit page backgrounds; this does not promise to remove ordinary pictures. In Firefox, choose Simplified under More settings > Format when the page offers it. That changes the page to a less cluttered print view and can remove background images and other elements. Preview before printing: the browsers’ controls work differently, and neither documented control guarantees that every logo, chart, or inline photo will disappear.
Choose the right control for the pictures you want to remove
“Pictures” can mean different things on a webpage. A photo embedded in an article is an inline image; artwork behind the text is a background image. Chrome’s documented print control targets backgrounds. Firefox offers both a background-print setting and, on supported pages, a simplified presentation that removes some clutter. If you need to remove particular inline images while keeping the rest of the page, neither browser’s documented built-in print setting is a guaranteed one-click solution.

These controls and labels are documented in Google Chrome Help and Mozilla Support. Their exact location can vary with browser version, operating system, print destination, and administrator settings on a managed device.
Print a webpage without backgrounds in Chrome
Open print preview
- Open the webpage you want to print.
- Open the browser’s print dialog with File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- Wait for the print preview and settings to appear. Choose the printer or PDF destination you intend to use.
Turn off Background graphics
- Expand More settings if that section is collapsed.
- Find Background graphics and turn it off.
- Review the preview before sending the job to a printer or saving it as a PDF.
This setting is useful when the unwanted ink is coming from a colored page background, decorative background artwork, or other page-background graphics. Google’s Chrome policy documentation describes a browser setting for printing background graphics. On managed devices, an administrator can control the default or restrict whether a user may change it for an individual print job.

If the preview still shows a photo, logo, or chart in the body of the page, that is not evidence that the background setting failed: it may be an ordinary inline image, which the documented control does not claim to remove. Chrome’s standard print workflow lets you adjust available print settings, but the cited official guidance does not document a universal built-in switch for removing all inline images.
Print a webpage with less clutter in Firefox
Try Simplified format
- Open the page, then open the Firefox menu and select Print….
- In print preview, expand More settings.
- Under Format, choose Simplified if it is offered.
- Inspect the updated preview. If it is suitable, print it or choose Save to PDF as the destination.
Mozilla Support says Simplified format strips away clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images. It changes the presentation rather than merely switching off backgrounds, so the resulting printout may not match the original page layout. Simplified is available only when Firefox can provide a simplified version of the page.

Use Reader View if Simplified is unavailable
If there is no Simplified option, check whether the page supports Reader View. Turn Reader View on before printing, then open print preview and check the result. Mozilla documents this as another way to get a print-friendly view. A page may not support Reader View; also, the Simplified format controls can be missing when a simplified page is unavailable or Reader View was already active before opening print.
Keep the original presentation but omit backgrounds
In Firefox print preview, use More settings and turn off Print backgrounds if you want to retain the original page presentation while omitting backgrounds. This is a different choice from Simplified: Mozilla’s instructions state that choosing Simplified disables the Print backgrounds control, so the two options cannot be applied together. Check the preview to see which result better fits the page you need.

When built-in print settings are not enough
For a page with individual pictures that must be removed while preserving selected text and other elements, use a page-editing workflow rather than expecting the background toggle to remove them. One possible option is an editing extension, such as PrintFriendly. Its Mozilla Add-ons listing describes webpage edits including image removal and lists website-data permissions. Before installing any third-party extension, review its current listing, permissions, and whether those permissions are appropriate for pages you visit. The listing is not a browser-built feature, and its description is not an independent test of how it works on every site.
If your goal is simply a digital copy rather than a paper printout, the browser’s Save to PDF destination can preserve the print preview as a file. That does not itself add an image-removal control: first choose the available Firefox presentation or background setting, or use a page-editing method if you need to remove particular elements.

Troubleshoot an unexpected print preview
Chrome still shows pictures
- Likely cause: the remaining items are inline pictures, not page backgrounds.
- What to do: use an editing workflow if you must remove specific elements, or keep the pictures and print the page with backgrounds off. Do not assume the Chrome background setting removes all image types.
Firefox does not offer Simplified
- Likely cause: Firefox cannot create a simplified version of that page, or Reader View was already active when print preview opened.
- What to do: check for Reader View on the page, or use Print backgrounds off if your goal is only to omit backgrounds while keeping the original presentation.
The printed page looks different from the screen
- Likely cause: websites can use different styling for paper, and Simplified intentionally changes the presentation.
- What to do: compare the preview after each relevant setting change and select the version that contains the text and layout you need. Mozilla specifically cautions that web pages may appear differently on paper than on screen.
A print option is missing or cannot be changed
- Likely cause: the option depends on the current page or format, the chosen destination, the browser version, or a managed-device policy. In Firefox, Print backgrounds is disabled in Simplified format; Chrome settings may also be controlled by an administrator.
- What to do: switch away from Simplified to access Firefox’s original-format background setting, verify the selected destination, and check with your device administrator if a Chrome control is restricted.
A page-editing extension asks for broad access
- Likely cause: editing a webpage may require permission to access its site data.
- What to do: review the extension’s current permission list and listing before installation. Do not grant access you are not comfortable with; browser print controls remain available for background-only changes.
Save paper or ink without losing needed content
Before printing, decide whether you want to keep the page’s original layout or get a cleaner reading view. Turn off backgrounds when the unwanted material is decorative page artwork. Use Firefox Simplified or Reader View when the page supports a less cluttered presentation. If the essential content includes inline images, inspect the preview carefully before removing elements through a third-party editing tool. Neither Google’s nor Mozilla’s cited instructions provide a percentage for paper or ink savings, so savings depend on the page and what you choose to omit.
