To remove images from a webpage you maintain, use print-specific CSS and check the result in print preview. For a page you do not control, try your browser’s simplified or reader view if it offers one. A print dialog’s “Background graphics” setting affects backgrounds, not necessarily inline images such as <img> elements.
The right method depends on what you mean by “images”: inline pictures, CSS background images, or surrounding clutter such as ads and navigation. These are different kinds of page content, and no single browser setting reliably removes them all.
Choose the method that matches the page

Always inspect print preview before printing or saving a PDF. Print output can differ from the screen: content may disappear, whitespace may remain, and page breaks may split content awkwardly.
Hide images on a site you maintain with print CSS
CSS media rules let a page use different styles for print or PDF output. Add a rule like this to the site’s stylesheet:

}This targets the listed HTML elements only. It is an implementation starting point, not a universal image-removal switch. It does not necessarily suppress CSS background images, visuals drawn by scripts, or image content embedded in other elements. Confirm its behavior in the browsers and on the pages your site supports.
Account for whitespace and layout
Removing an image can leave space behind if its parent element still has a fixed height, padding, margin, or layout rule. If preview shows a blank area, inspect the surrounding container and adjust its print styles as well. Avoid hiding an entire container if it also holds a caption, label, or other content that should remain in print.
For example, if a site uses a dedicated image wrapper, you might add a narrowly targeted print rule for that wrapper after checking what else it contains:

}Replace these example class names with selectors that actually exist on your site. Broad rules can remove meaningful content or disrupt a layout, so keep them as specific as practical.

Background images are applied through CSS rather than represented by an <img> element, so the rule above does not target them. If your site uses decorative backgrounds, a print rule can suppress them separately:

}This broad selector may affect more than decoration and should be tested against the site’s print design. It does not remove inline images or every script-generated visual. Prefer a narrower selector if only certain sections need their backgrounds removed.

Test the print stylesheet
- Open a page that uses the relevant image types.
- Open the browser’s print dialog and inspect the preview.
- Check that the images you intended to suppress are gone, while headings, captions, links, and other useful text remain.
- Look for leftover gaps, clipped content, and poor page breaks; adjust the print CSS and preview again.
- Test more than one supported browser if consistent output matters. Browser support for paged-media features has not always been uniform.
Print a page you do not control
You cannot normally edit the stylesheet of an arbitrary website from its print dialog. Instead, try a reader or simplified mode that rebuilds the page for reading. These modes can remove clutter, but they are page-dependent and may not be available everywhere.
Firefox: try Simplified format or Reader View
- Open the page and choose Print from the Firefox menu.
- Expand More settings in the print panel.
- If the Format option is present, select Simplified and check the updated preview.
- If Simplified is not offered, check whether the page has a Reader View option in the address bar. Open Reader View first, then print from that view.
Mozilla documents Simplified format as a way to remove clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images. It is not available for every page; an absent Format option can mean the page has no simplified version. Reader View is another route when the page offers it.

Microsoft Edge: backgrounds and Immersive Reader
- Open Print from Settings and more, or use Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings and look for Background graphics.
- Turn off Background graphics if you want to omit webpage backgrounds, then inspect the preview.
- For a less cluttered page, open it in Immersive Reader first if that option is available, then print from there.
Background graphics is a background control, not a general switch for inline <img> elements. Microsoft describes Immersive Reader as a printing workaround, but it is not supported on every website.
Chrome and other browsers
Do not assume a setting in one browser controls all image types in another. Chrome Enterprise documentation covers policies for setting the default background-graphics printing behavior in managed environments; that is administrative policy guidance, not a general consumer setting that removes every inline image. Chrome and Firefox support @page, but paged-media behavior and support for individual features can vary. If a specific CSS effect matters, verify it in the target browser’s preview.
Save the result as a PDF
In the print dialog, choose a PDF destination when the browser and platform offer one. For Firefox, Mozilla lists Save to PDF among the print destinations. Apply the CSS or reader-mode approach first, then inspect the PDF output just as you would a paper preview. Check that the page is legible, the intended images are absent, and no important content was lost.

Common problems and fixes
- Inline images still appear after turning off Background graphics. That setting concerns backgrounds. Use a reader mode if available, or, if you maintain the site, add print CSS targeting the relevant elements.
- A background image remains. The
imgselector does not match a CSS background. Add an appropriate print rule for the background, then verify it in preview. - There is a blank block where an image used to be. The image may be hidden while its wrapper retains dimensions or spacing. Adjust the wrapper’s print styles without removing any text it contains.
- Firefox does not show Simplified in Format. Simplified may be unavailable for that page. Try Reader View if offered, or use the page’s regular print output and inspect it before committing to a print job.
- Edge does not offer Immersive Reader. Microsoft says availability depends on the website. Use the ordinary print dialog, and remember that Background graphics only controls backgrounds.
- The print preview differs across browsers. Browser support and rendering of print styles can vary. Check each supported browser rather than assuming an identical result.
- Images disappear but the page becomes hard to follow. Some images carry information, not decoration. Keep captions or text alternatives where useful, and use a narrower selector or preserve selected images in print.
