For example, f'{12.5:.2f}' produces '12.50'. This formats the value as text; it does not change the number used in later calculations.
Format a number to two decimal places
Use the .2f format specifier with an f-string or Python’s format() function:
price = 12.5
print(f"{price:.2f}") # 12.50
print(format(price, ".2f")) # 12.50The .2 sets the number of digits after the decimal point, and f requests fixed-point formatting. The result is a string, so whole-number values also show two places, such as 8.00. Python’s floating-point documentation uses the same format to display pi as 3.14.
What happens to the original number?
Formatting controls how a value is shown. It does not mutate the original value or make subsequent arithmetic use a number rounded to two places.

print(shown) # 3.46
print(value) # 3.456If you need a rounded numeric result for further calculations, formatting alone is not the right operation. For decimal quantities that need an explicit rounding policy, use Decimal and quantize().
Why floats can produce surprising rounded digits
Python’s float type stores numbers in binary floating-point. Many decimal fractions, including 0.1, cannot be represented exactly in that format. Consequently, .2f rounds the stored binary value for display, which may not match the result expected from the decimal digits originally typed.

Construct a Decimal from a string when you need to preserve the written decimal input rather than start from a binary float. Then quantize to Decimal('0.01') and specify the rounding rule your application requires.

rounded = amount.quantize(Decimal("0.01"), rounding=ROUND_HALF_UP)
print(f"{rounded:.2f}") # 2.68In this example, Decimal('2.675') retains the decimal input, and quantize() returns a decimal value with two places. ROUND_HALF_UP is a selected policy for this example, not a universal rule: financial, legal, or regulated work may require a different policy. The official Decimal documentation describes fixed-point formatting, quantization, and rounding modes.
How round() relates to Decimal
For a Decimal, round(number, ndigits) follows the active decimal context’s rounding mode and is equivalent to quantizing to the corresponding power of ten. If the rounding policy matters, choose it deliberately rather than assuming that round() or formatting applies the rule your application needs.
