Waze lets you compare alternate routes on a map before starting a drive, and you can schedule a future drive to get a traffic-based reminder about when to leave. Google Maps also lets you check route traffic before departure, so the difference is not that Maps cannot show it: Waze’s distinctive workflow pairs route previews with a planned-drive reminder.
How to preview alternate routes in Waze
On an Android phone, Waze lets you inspect route options before you begin navigation. The exact controls differ in Android Auto and CarPlay, so use the steps for the device you are navigating with.
- Search for your destination and tap it.
- For a new destination, tap View routes.
- Swipe up to see the available alternatives.
- Tap a route to preview it on the map.
Waze documents route previews separately for Android, Android Auto, and CarPlay. If the steps above do not match your screen, check the instructions for your platform.
How to schedule a Waze drive and get a leave reminder
A route preview helps you compare options now; a planned drive is a separate feature for a trip you intend to take later. After reviewing a route, Waze for Android lets you select Leave later, choose the intended arrival day and time, and save the drive.

Waze Help says, “Waze will remind you when it’s time to leave, based on real-time traffic.” The reminder is an estimate, not a guarantee of arrival time: traffic can change, and Waze says it also uses your location at that time if it has GPS permission. What Google Maps can show before you leave
Google Maps also provides pre-trip traffic information. Its Android instructions describe checking current traffic on a route and typical traffic by hour. To do this, search for the destination, open driving directions, and expand the information panel to view the traffic details. The controls and information shown can vary by platform and route.

Platform limits to know
Waze calendar synchronization is unavailable on Android Auto, Android Automotive, and CarPlay, according to its calendar-sync help page. Calendar sync and planned drives are related but distinct features; do not assume the phone’s planning steps or calendar behavior carry over unchanged to an in-car system. Feature availability and labels can also vary with app version and platform.
