To limit reabsorption, exclude rain, avoid unnecessary exposure to high humidity, and track product moisture alongside storage temperature and humidity using site-validated procedures. There is no universal humidity threshold or packaging specification established by the studies cited here.
What torrefaction changes—and what it does not
Raw biomass contains hydroxyl-rich cell-wall components that bind water. Torrefaction partially removes or alters those groups, reducing hydrogen bonding and often lowering equilibrium moisture content. Severity, feedstock composition, and physical structure all affect the result; changes to pores and condensed tar have also been proposed as contributors. The treatment reduces moisture affinity, but it does not guarantee that biomass will never absorb water again.
Keep two moisture questions separate. Moisture remaining after production is not the same as moisture later taken up from ambient air or liquid water. A product can leave processing relatively dry and subsequently reabsorb water under its storage conditions.
Why a single moisture number cannot predict storage performance
Moisture response depends on the feedstock, torrefaction conditions, physical form, temperature, relative humidity, and test method. A vapor-sorption test describes behavior in humid air; a contact-angle test describes surface wetting; immersion tests expose material to liquid water. These measurements answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, a 2012 corn-stover study measured water-vapor adsorption across equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) of 10–98% and temperatures of 10–40 °C. It reported generally lower equilibrium moisture in torrefied samples, and the modified Oswin model best represented the relationship in that experiment. Those ranges are experimental conditions, not recommended storage limits.
A 2021 review by Wei-Hsin Chen and colleagues summarizes a poplar-wood experiment in which, at 65% humidity for six hours, equilibrium moisture content fell from 5.72% in raw wood to 3.27% in wood torrefied at 230 °C—a 42.8% reduction. The same review reports contact angles rising from about 94° at 200 °C to 107° at 230 °C for torrefied poplar under the cited study conditions. These figures describe specific material and test conditions, not expected performance for every feedstock or product. Read the review.

How to reduce reabsorption during storage
- Keep rain and liquid water away. Use storage and handling arrangements appropriate to the site and product form to prevent direct wetting during storage and transport. The cited pellet study identifies rain and high humidity as quality risks; it does not establish a single cover, container, or packaging design that works for every operation. Read the 2020 pellet study.
- Limit exposure to humid air. Select storage conditions and operating practices with local temperature, humidity, throughput, ventilation, and material form in mind. The available studies do not establish one universal humidity setpoint, so do not treat a test range or result as a facility limit.
- Measure the product and log storage conditions. Track the relevant product moisture and record storage temperature and humidity according to procedures validated for the site. The cited papers do not prescribe a universal sensor, sampling plan, or acceptance threshold; establish these for the material and process in use.
- Compare like with like when assessing a product or process. Record feedstock, torrefaction temperature or severity, whether the material is loose or pelleted, the humidity and temperature for any equilibrium-moisture result, and whether the test involved vapor or liquid-water exposure.
What the studies say about wetting and pellets
In a 2018 study of torrefied poplar and fir, reported contact angles ranged from 94° to 113°. Values above 90° conventionally indicate hydrophobic surface behavior, but a surface contact angle does not show that bulk material or pellets cannot absorb moisture. Read the 2018 study.
Liquid-water exposure can produce a different outcome from humid-air exposure. In a 2020 immersion study, raw wood and forest-residue pellets swelled and disintegrated quickly; bark pellets retained their form longer but lost structural integrity after about four hours of immersion. That is a test-specific observation, not a prediction of warehouse storage life. Read the pellet study.

The 2012 corn-stover study also found negligible dry-matter mass loss due to microbial degradation for samples torrefied at 250 and 300 °C under its test conditions of 97% ERH and 30 °C. That result does not establish resistance to all organisms, storage durations, or biomass types. Read the corn-stover study.

- Equilibrium moisture content or water-vapor adsorption: relevant to moisture uptake from humid air under the stated temperature and humidity.
- Contact angle: indicates how a liquid droplet interacts with a surface; it does not establish that a bulk load is immune to moisture uptake.
- Immersion or liquid-water testing: describes exposure to direct water contact, not ordinary warehouse vapor conditions.
When evaluating a claim, check that its feedstock, torrefaction conditions, product form, and test exposure resemble the conditions you need to manage. A favorable result in one category does not establish the same performance in another.
