A settled font set is not proof that the intended font loaded. Choose one policy for each test: require the custom font and fail if it is missing, or deliberately use a stable fallback and compare that rendering consistently.
What font readiness tells you—and what it does not
The CSS Font Loading API exposes the document’s font set through document.fonts. Individual faces can be unloaded, loading, loaded, or failed. The set’s ready promise fulfills after loading and layout operations for fonts used by the document finish. See MDN’s CSS Font Loading API reference and its documentation for the Document fonts property.
Readiness and success are different conditions. The used-font set may differ from all declared faces; for example, a face that is declared but not used need not be part of the page’s current font work. With font-display: optional, the browser may also choose not to use a face. Awaiting document.fonts.ready therefore does not, by itself, establish that a particular family, weight, or style rendered.
Likewise, Playwright’s networkidle means there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms. Its Page API documentation discourages using that state as a testing readiness assertion. It cannot establish whether the desired font loaded successfully.

Choose a font policy for the test
Require the custom font
Use this policy when the baseline is meant to represent a branded or otherwise mandatory face. After the page reaches the state that uses the text, wait for font activity to settle and assert that the required face is loaded. A failed or still-loading required face should fail the test, with diagnostics identifying the family and requested weight and style. Do not silently treat a missing font as success: that can conceal a real asset or delivery regression.
Allow a fallback deliberately
If fallback rendering is acceptable, make it an explicit expected state. Choose a fallback available in the test environment and keep it consistent between baseline creation and comparison. Do not capture an arbitrary instant during loading: browser-visible behavior can change as a face becomes available. The test should distinguish an acceptable fallback from an unintended failure of a required font.
Use a bounded font check before capturing
- Navigate using the application’s real readiness condition. A generic navigation event may occur before client-side rendering has put the relevant text on the page.
- Trigger the state that uses the text. This matters when the text or its font is loaded only after interaction, lazy rendering, or a conditional route.
- Wait for font readiness with a timeout. A bounded wait prevents a hanging test from stalling indefinitely. If it times out, report the browser and version, font family, weight and style, and available resource-failure details.
- Inspect the faces that matter. Check the status of required faces and apply the test’s declared policy. A resolved readiness promise is not a substitute for this assertion.
- Capture only after the policy passes. Keep the browser version, operating system or container, installed fonts, and font assets consistent between baseline generation and comparison.
This Playwright example gathers state for diagnostics; it is not a universal assertion because applications use different families, weights, and fallback policies:

Logging the full face list helps show whether the set settled and which faces failed, but the test still needs to decide which face or fallback is correct.
Check both parts of the font delivery chain
For Google Fonts, the browser first requests generated CSS, then requests the corresponding font resource. A diagnosis may therefore need to examine both responses, not only the font file. Google’s technical considerations also describe browser differences while fonts load: Chrome and Safari may temporarily show blank space for text using an unloaded font, while Firefox may initially show a default font and later render again. These are behaviors described by Google, not a guarantee for every browser version or configuration.
When reproducibility matters, pin the browser and runtime and provide controlled font assets where practical. This reduces variation in the delivery and rendering environment; it does not remove the need to assert the required face’s state.

Troubleshoot failures and screenshot timeouts
A required face is marked failed
Check the font resource request and, for Google Fonts, the preceding stylesheet request. Confirm that the expected family, weight, and style are available and that the page actually uses the face under test. If the test permits fallback, assert that policy explicitly; otherwise, treat the failed required face as a test failure.
The test captures before the page uses the font
Trigger the relevant route, interaction, or lazy content before awaiting readiness. A font set can be ready for the currently used fonts even though the later test state will use another face.

The readiness wait or screenshot hangs
Use a bounded wait and retain diagnostics rather than suppressing all font errors. A Playwright issue opened September 29, 2026, reports a Linux WebKit screenshot timeout while waiting for fonts with Playwright 1.63.0 and bundled WebKit 26.6 revision 2359. The report says a matching 1.60.0 control completed, but the author had not isolated a minimal cause, identified the first affected version, or established a responsible WebKit change in the update dated September 30, 2026. The report also says bypassing the screenshot font wait did not repair the font state. Treat this as an environment- and version-specific report, not a general Playwright defect or proof of a fix; check the issue for updates and reproduce with your exact browser/runtime before adopting a workaround.

A workaround changes the baseline’s appearance
Do not blindly abort font requests or convert every font failure into success. A Playwright maintainer comment in a 2024 issue discussion notes that aborting matching font requests changes the page’s look. Blocking those requests can therefore produce a different rendering rather than solve a loading problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does document.fonts.ready guarantee every declared font loaded?
No. It fulfills after loading and layout work for fonts used by the document completes; check the required faces’ statuses separately.
Can I use networkidle as my font-ready check?
No. It indicates a period without network connections, not that the intended face rendered successfully.
