If your phone gets wet, disconnect it from power, switch it off if it is on, and let it dry in a cool, ventilated place. Do not charge it through a wet port, use heat or compressed air, or put it in rice. A submerged phone, exposure to dirty or corrosive liquid, or any persistent fault warrants a qualified inspection; drying the outside cannot confirm that the inside is safe.
What to do immediately when a phone gets wet
- Put your safety first. Retrieve the phone only if it is safe. If it is plugged into mains power, or is hot, smoking, swelling, bubbling, or melting, do not handle it; move away and seek appropriate emergency assistance.
- Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug any cable or accessory. Do not connect a charger while the phone, port, or cable end may still be wet. Apple warns that charging with a wet connector can corrode its pins and permanently damage the connector (Apple Support).
- Turn it off if it is on. If it is already off, leave it off. Switching it on to check whether it works can introduce electrical power while moisture may be inside. Samsung’s instructions for non-water-resistant devices and iFixit’s iPhone guidance both advise powering down after liquid exposure (Samsung Support; iFixit).
- Remove only accessible items. Take off the case and, if the manufacturer’s instructions for your model allow it, remove the SIM tray or other readily removable items. Do not open a sealed phone or force anything out of the port.
- Dry the exterior gently. Wipe it with a soft, clean cloth. Keep the phone in a cool, dry place with airflow, following the manufacturer’s instructions for the model and type of liquid.
How to dry a wet charging port
For an iPhone showing a liquid alert
Apple’s Singapore support instructions, published November 7, 2024, say to unplug both ends of the cable, hold the iPhone with its connector facing down, and gently tap it against your hand to help remove excess liquid. Leave it in a dry place with airflow. After at least 30 minutes, you can try reconnecting the cable. If the liquid alert returns, unplug it and allow more drying time; Apple says this can take up to 24 hours (Apple Support). That retry interval is Apple-specific, not a universal timing rule for every brand or model.
Do not put a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into the connector. Apple also says not to use external heat, compressed air, or rice: heat and airflow from compressed air can cause problems, while rice particles may enter and damage the phone.

Samsung advises unplugging the device, wiping it, gently shaking it with the port facing down, and leaving it in a ventilated area; a fan may help. Avoid forceful shaking and do not charge until the device is fully dry. Follow the current instructions for your exact model, since Samsung’s steps vary with the phone’s water-resistance capability and the liquid involved (Samsung Support).

Can you use wireless charging?
A Qi-certified wireless charger may be an option only if your phone supports wireless charging and its back is dry. Apple and Samsung identify wireless charging as an alternative while a connector dries (Apple Support; Samsung Support). It will not fix internal liquid damage, and do not place a wet phone on a charger.
What not to do
- Do not use heat. Avoid hair dryers, radiators, ovens, and other external heat sources.
- Do not blast the port with compressed air. It can drive moisture or debris further into the device.
- Do not use rice. It does not establish that internal moisture is gone, and particles can get into the phone.
- Do not probe the connector. Cotton swabs, paper towels, and other objects can damage the port or leave material inside.
- Do not keep testing or charging the phone. A phone that powers on or appears normal may still have internal moisture or corrosion.
- Do not assume water resistance makes exposure harmless. Ratings and resistance depend on the device and its condition, and protection can decline with wear.
Samsung cautions that internal damage or corrosion may occur even when a Galaxy appears to work normally after exposure (Samsung Support).

When to get a water-damaged phone inspected
Arrange assessment by a manufacturer-authorized or otherwise qualified service provider if the phone was submerged, exposed to dirty or corrosive liquid, or develops charging, display, sound, or power problems. Samsung recommends service-center inspection after water exposure, including when the device seems to work normally. Apple advises contacting Apple or an authorized provider if liquid exposure is suspected and the device has an issue (Samsung Support; Apple Support).
If preserving photos or other important data matters, tell the service provider before authorizing repair. iFixit describes liquid-damage repair as challenging and advises people who are unsure or need important data to consider professional help before disassembly (iFixit). Board-level cleaning is not a general first-aid procedure: it requires opening the device and handling delicate connectors and the battery.

How to reduce the risk of water damage
- Check the water-resistance capability of your exact model rather than assuming all phones from a brand have the same protection.
- Do not intentionally submerge a phone or take it swimming or bathing. Apple also advises avoiding pressurized or high-velocity water, saunas, steam rooms, extreme humidity, and use outside recommended temperature conditions (Apple Support).
- Remember that water resistance is not permanent. Apple says it can decline with normal wear; impacts and exposure conditions also matter.
- Keep liquids away from charging ports and disconnect cables before cleaning a phone. If a phone or cable end becomes wet, wait until both are dry before reconnecting.
Does a warranty cover liquid damage?
Coverage depends on the manufacturer, plan, and jurisdiction. Apple Canada says liquid damage is not covered under its One-Year Limited Warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may also apply (Apple Support). Do not assume that this Apple policy applies to other brands, protection plans, or countries; check the terms that apply to your device.
