Back up files you can access, verify any cloud sync, and use only an export or transfer the game officially supports. A local copy cannot retrieve data held only on the publisher’s servers.
What can you actually preserve?
Games may store progress on your device, synchronize eligible saves through a platform or game cloud service, or keep some information on the publisher’s servers. One game may use several of these at once: a local save, online inventory, account progression, and a hosted world may each have a different storage and transfer route.
A backup protects only data included in that copy. A platform or device backup does not, by itself, export publisher-held progress, and copying a file is not proof that it contains your online character, items, purchases, or account state. Netflix Help Center describes its games as saving “either through cloud saves or locally on your device”; the applicable behavior depends on the specific game. Netflix Help Center: How do game saves work on Netflix?
How to preserve what is still available
- Read the official shutdown notice. Find the game’s publisher announcement and support page. Record the shutdown date, any export or migration deadline, supported destinations, and what the offer includes. Look specifically for a save download, world snapshot, account transfer, account-linking instructions, cross-progression, or offline-play option. A shutdown does not guarantee an export.
- Identify the storage route for each kind of progress. Check the official documentation for the exact game, edition, platform, account, and mode. Confirm which account or profile owns a save and whether the title supports cloud saves. If it does, verify that the latest session has synchronized before switching devices, reinstalling, deleting data, or removing a profile. Do not assume that cloud support covers every kind of progress.
- Follow the game’s account-linking instructions, if offered. For example, EA says SimCity BuildIt saves progress to the device and recommends linking a supported account service to recover a city after reinstalling. EA also advises saving on the original device before trying another one. That guidance applies to SimCity BuildIt, not to games generally. EA: Link your SimCity BuildIt account to save progress
- Copy accessible local files separately. Where the game and platform permit access, keep the original files and make a dated copy in another location. An external SSD or hard drive can hold a second copy of files you can access, but it cannot capture data held only on a publisher’s server. Use the exact title’s official instructions for finding and copying files; there is no universal save-file path or console export procedure.
- Inspect any publisher-provided archive before relying on it. Check its snapshot date, contents, format, download window, and restoration instructions. Treat a snapshot as a record of a particular point in time, not necessarily a complete or current world.
- Keep the original untouched while checking the copy. Preserve filenames and dates, and follow the publisher’s restore or import steps. Do not test an import or overwrite the only copy of a save.
Use the account and sync behavior documented for your game
Account identity can matter when progress is stored on a game’s servers. KONAMI support says that server-stored save data remains when the same PlayStation Network or Xbox Live ID is used, while a different ID yields different server-stored data. KONAMI also cautions: “depending on the timing of the dropped connection, the server may not have received all of your game progress.” These are KONAMI’s rules for its documented service, not a guarantee about other games. For a game with cloud saves, confirm the latest sync using the game or platform’s documented method before moving devices. If the game stores a save only locally, signing in on a new device may not restore it. Netflix’s support documentation distinguishes those outcomes for Netflix games; Square Enix likewise provides title-specific guidance for transferring data after switching devices. What a shutdown export may—and may not—contain
Exports are publisher-specific. PixARK publisher Snail Games announced downloads for files from retired legacy servers, available beginning August 25, Beijing Time (UTC+8). The notice offered an August 3 snapshot and an August 24 final snapshot; it warned that some buildings were absent from the later snapshot after player transfers and dismantling. The publisher said downloaded files could be used in local single-player or a privately hosted server. Its stated download deadline, September 24, 2026, Beijing Time, has passed as of October 7, 2026, so that window should not be treated as currently available. - Ultra fast data transfers: the external hard drive works with USB 3.0 thickened copper cable to provide super fast transfer speeds. Theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s and write speed is as high as 103MB/s.
- Ultra-thin and quiet: the motherboard adopts a noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
- Compatibility: compatible with PS4/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac/Android,Stable and fast downloading on game console no difference from fast transmission when using on PC.
- Plug and Play: no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use. The hard drive chip is wrapped with aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data
- Package Contents: 1* portable hard drive, 1 *USB 3.0 cable, 1*USB to type C adapter,1 *user manual, shell packaging, three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services
The PixARK example shows why it is important to compare snapshots against your goal: the newest file is not automatically the most complete for every player, and a downloadable world archive is not necessarily a transferable account or character. Check the publisher’s own description for what each file includes and where it can be restored.
Compare available preservation routes
If a game offers multiple options, compare them by the data they include, who controls them, whether they remain usable after shutdown, any deadline or account requirement, whether they are a live transfer or dated snapshot, and the documented restore location.

| Route | What it may cover | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Local copy | Files accessible on the device, if the game and platform permit copying | Which save data the file contains; how and where the title supports restoring it |
| Platform or game cloud save | Eligible saves synchronized by that service | Whether the exact title supports it, which account owns the save, and whether the latest session synced |
| Publisher export or migration | Only the data and destinations named in the shutdown notice | Contents, snapshot date, format, account requirements, deadline, and restore instructions |
| Publisher-server progress without an export | Data retained by the publisher while its service operates | Whether the shutdown notice offers any way to download, transfer, or continue using it |
Which game details to check before moving or reinstalling
- Exact title, edition, platform, and game mode.
- The account or profile that owns the save, and whether the destination must use the same account.
- Whether progress is local, cloud-synchronized, server-held, or split across those locations.
- Whether an export or migration exists, what it includes, and its deadline.
- How the publisher says to restore or import a copy, and whether the game remains playable after shutdown.
These details vary by title. Use the game’s official support and shutdown pages for current instructions rather than relying on a general file path or another game’s transfer steps.
