A thread pool can run tasks concurrently and still give you results in input order. In Python, use Executor.map() for straightforward ordered results; when submitting individual tasks, associate each future with its input index and restore results to their original positions. The tasks do not need to start or finish in order.
What “preserve task order” means
Task order can refer to when tasks start, when they finish, or the order in which your program consumes their results. A thread pool does not guarantee that tasks start or finish in input order: execution overlaps, and a shorter task may finish first. If what matters is the order of the output, collect results by their original input positions.
Python: use map() for input-ordered results
ThreadPoolExecutor.map() applies a function to corresponding items from one or more input iterables. Calls may execute asynchronously and concurrently, but the returned iterator yields results in the order of the inputs, as documented for Python 3.14’s concurrent.futures.
from concurrent.futures import ThreadPoolExecutor
def work(item):
return transform(item)
with ThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=8) as pool:
results = list(pool.map(work, items))
Use this when you want a result for every input in sequence and do not need to handle each completed task immediately. Converting the iterator to a list collects all results in that order.

Bound outstanding work for large inputs
In Python 3.14, map() accepts buffersize to limit the number of submitted tasks whose results have not yet been yielded. For example, pool.map(work, items, buffersize=16) limits that buffer to 16; when it is full, input iteration pauses until a result is yielded. Choose a limit appropriate to your workload and memory needs. The chunksize argument has no effect for ThreadPoolExecutor.
Python: use indices when submitting individual tasks
Use submit() when tasks need individual handling or when you want to process results as soon as they finish. Pair each future with its input index, then put each result into the corresponding slot. Python’s as_completed() yields futures in completion order, not input order.

from concurrent.futures import ThreadPoolExecutor, as_completed
results = [None] * len(items)
with ThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=8) as pool:
future_to_index = {
pool.submit(work, item): index
for index, item in enumerate(items)
}
for future in as_completed(future_to_index):
index = future_to_index[future]
results[index] = future.result()
Although results are handled as soon as each future completes, the final results list follows the order of items. This pattern assumes each input produces one result and that items has a known length.
Alternative: keep futures in submission order
You can also build a list of futures in input order and call result() on each in that same order. The resulting values will be ordered, but requesting the first result may block while that task is still running—even if later tasks have already finished. Use indexed slots with as_completed() when prompt per-task handling matters.

Choose based on how you need to consume results
| Approach | Result handling order | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
Executor.map() |
Input order | Applying the same function across input iterables | A slow earlier task can delay yielding later results; in Python 3.14, buffersize can bound submitted-but-not-yielded work. |
| Futures in a list, retrieved in order | Input order | Custom submission when waiting for ordered results is acceptable | Retrieving an earlier slow future can hold up consumption of later completed results. |
as_completed() plus index slots |
Completion order for handling; input order in the assembled list | Handling each result promptly while preserving the final output order | Requires tracking each future’s original index. |
Ordered delivery is not the same as ordered execution. If an early input takes longer, later work may already be complete while the ordered consumer waits for the earlier result.
Handle task errors when retrieving results
With map(), an exception raised by a task is raised when you retrieve that task’s result from the iterator. With individually submitted futures, calling future.result() raises the task’s exception. Retrieve results or otherwise inspect futures so failures do not go unnoticed.

When an executor is used as a context manager, leaving the with block waits for pending work to finish. That is useful for normal batch collection, but it means exiting the block is not an immediate way to abandon outstanding tasks.
Java: preserve task-list order with invokeAll()
In Java, ExecutorService.invokeAll(tasks) returns futures in the sequential order of the supplied task list. Each returned future is complete when invokeAll() returns. Retrieve their results in list order to build an input-ordered collection, as specified in the Java SE 26 ExecutorService documentation. This batch approach is appropriate when waiting for all tasks before collecting their results is acceptable.

Check your runtime’s API guarantees
These guarantees are specific to the documented APIs and versions: Python 3.14 and Java SE 26. Do not assume another language’s thread-pool map, bulk-submit method, or future API has identical ordering or buffering behavior; consult the documentation for the runtime you use.
