Before moving from an Xbox One to an Xbox Series X|S, make sure you can sign in to the Microsoft account tied to your Xbox profile and purchases. Connect the new console to Xbox network, then open each supported game whose progress matters so its cloud save can sync. Check that the expected progress appears before you erase, sell, or give away the old console. Save syncing and moving installed game files are separate tasks.
Before you switch consoles: prepare your account and saves
- Confirm the account. Verify the email or sign-in method for the Microsoft account used by the Xbox profile with the games and progress you want. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules associate the user license for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games with the Microsoft account. A different account does not automatically inherit those purchases or saves.
- Sign in on the new console and connect it to Xbox network. Use the same account. Cloud saves require the console to be online to roam between consoles.
- Install or start each important game. Supported saves can sync through the cloud when you launch the game. Allow the game to load, then check for the expected profile and progress rather than assuming every title has synced just because you signed in.
- Verify before retiring the old console. Keep it intact until you have opened the games that matter on the new console and confirmed their progress. This is a practical precaution, not a stated Microsoft requirement.
- Check unusual cases with the game’s publisher or Xbox support. Do this for separate Xbox One and Series editions, publisher-managed accounts, or progress shared across distinct products; the cross-generation rule does not establish that every release or account system carries progress.
Which Xbox game saves transfer?
Microsoft says saves created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can transfer to other Xbox One or Series X|S consoles through the cloud. Its Xbox Game Development Kit policy XR-130 requires save roaming for content available on both generations when games share the same TitleID. That qualification matters: the rule is not a blanket promise for every edition, separate release, or game-specific progression system.
Original Xbox saves are a clear exception. Xbox’s backward compatibility FAQ explains that original Xbox game saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S; the cloud-transfer statement applies to saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S. See Xbox Backward Compatible Games.
Check game compatibility and disc support
Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, but check the specific title and console model. Compatible digital games you own appear in Ready to Install, according to Xbox’s backward compatibility information. A compatible disc game requires its disc to download and play; Series S is digital-only and cannot use physical game discs. Series X disc use likewise depends on title compatibility and retaining the disc.

For a particular game, check these distinctions before assuming both the game and its progress will carry over:
- Console: Series X has a disc drive; Series S does not.
- Game support: Confirm the precise title is playable on Series X|S.
- Version identity: Confirm whether the old and new editions share the relevant title/save identity.
- Original release generation: Original Xbox saves do not transfer to the newer console families; Xbox One and Series saves have cloud roaming support as described above.
- Account and ownership: Check whether access is tied to your account or relies on a household console license.
Do you need to change your Home Xbox?
Not just to move your account or enable supported cloud saves. A digital-game user license is associated with the Microsoft account, while a Home console has a device license that can let other users on that console access eligible content. Consider changing the Home console only if shared household access or offline device licensing on the new console is relevant. Microsoft Support says Home console changes are limited to five times during a one-year period; the page does not state a year for that policy figure.

Save syncing is not the same as moving game installations
Cloud save roaming concerns game progress. Moving installed game files is a separate convenience and is not a requirement for save continuity. No external drive is needed just to make supported cloud saves roam. The available official information here does not establish current Network Transfer menu steps or require a particular storage device, so do not treat either as part of preparing saves.

- Confirm you signed into the same Microsoft account used for the old Xbox profile.
- Connect the new console to Xbox network and launch the game to give its supported save a chance to sync.
- Check whether the title uses a separate Series edition, publisher account, or progression system; consult current game-specific support if it does.
- If the game is an original Xbox title, its original-console save is not transferable to Xbox One or Series X|S under Xbox’s stated backward compatibility guidance.
- Do not erase the old console until the progress you care about is visible on the new one.
Microsoft’s GDK policy describes the cross-generation requirement this way: “Between generations (Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S), games which share the same TitleID must: Support game save roaming for content available on both generations.” The policy is version 2.0, dated 2025-11-01, and was last updated 2025-11-06.
