Before adding or replacing an Apple home hub, confirm the home owner’s Apple Account, update and connect the hub, and check whether any Matter accessories require Thread. Apple’s currently documented hub options are HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV; Apple has not established a separate newly released “Apple home hub” in the official sources cited here.
What to check before setting up a new hub
Confirm the home owner’s account
Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to the Home app as a hub. Make sure the owner’s Apple Account is the one being used. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends turning on iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for that account.
Prepare the device and network
- Update the HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV to the latest software available for that device.
- Keep it powered on at home and connected to the home Wi-Fi network.
- If setup stalls, restart the device and try again.
Apple’s setup guidance, published September 22, 2025, gives these prerequisites and troubleshooting steps: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV as a home hub.
Choose a hub that fits your accessories
Apple documents HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hub options. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically during setup. An Apple TV becomes a hub after you add it to a room in the Home app.

Thread support matters if you use Thread-enabled Matter accessories. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app, and Thread Matter devices need a Thread-enabled hub. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled options; it also recognizes supported third-party Thread border routers. Do not assume every Apple TV model or network configuration supports Thread. Check the exact hub model and accessory requirements before buying or relocating equipment.
For current model and regional availability details, consult Apple’s Home app accessories page. Availability and supported models may change, and Apple notes that its hub products are not available in every country or region.

- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

| Supported third-party Thread border router | Support and setup depend on the device and configuration. | Apple recognizes supported third-party border routers for Thread Matter accessories. |
Pick among supported options based on the accessories in your home and whether you also want a smart speaker or Apple TV for other household uses. Apple’s Home app overview describes hubs as enabling remote access and automations.
Set up Matter accessories with care
Apple’s developer documentation says iOS 16.1 and later supports Matter. Matter pairing can be done in the Home app or a HomeKit-based app; scanning a setup code can provision a device onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions and verify that the selected hub meets the accessory’s connectivity requirements. See Apple’s Matter documentation.

Do not assume that changing hubs will automatically migrate every accessory, automation, or setting. The cited Apple sources do not establish a universal migration guarantee, so plan to check the household’s important devices and routines after setup.

- Open the Home app and go to Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges to see the active hub.
- If more than one hub is available, turn off Automatic Selection in that view to set a preferred hub manually.
- Test the accessories and automations your household relies on, including remote access if you use it.
Apple’s current hub setup guidance and Home app overview explain the automatic and preferred hub behavior; a particular home’s operation still needs to be verified after setup.
About the phrase “new Apple home hub”
If “new Apple home hub” means a rumored or anticipated standalone product, the official Apple sources cited here do not establish that such a separate device has been announced or released.
