To have a PS5 game ready as soon as it becomes available, check its listed storage requirement, free enough console space, confirm you’re using the account that owns it, and set up downloads for your launch-day plan. For a pre-order, review the game’s automatic-download selections in Game Library; for a remote download, link your console in PlayStation App. Rest mode downloads only work if the PS5 is connected to the internet.
1. Check the game’s storage requirement and your available space
Don’t rely on a generic estimate for how much space a “large” game needs. Open the game’s PlayStation Store listing and select View Product details to check its minimum free-space requirement. Then, on your PS5, go to Settings > Storage and check the available space.
If you need to make room, review installed games and saved data before removing anything. Sony also supports remotely managing internal storage through PlayStation App if the console runs out of room while downloading.
2. Choose a storage option that can run the game
For immediate preparation, first manage what is already installed. If you need more capacity for PS5 games, Sony supports an installed M.2 SSD for downloading, copying, and launching PS5 and PS4 games. Check Sony’s current compatibility requirements and the specifications of any particular drive before buying; support for the category does not establish that every drive is compatible.

Sony recommends USB extended storage for PS4 games, but PS5 games cannot be played from it. A generic USB drive is therefore not a substitute for an M.2 SSD when your goal is to launch PS5 games from expanded storage.
3. Set up the account and remote-download access
Use the PlayStation account that owns or purchased the game. To start a download remotely with PlayStation App, link the app to your PS5 and configure automatic downloads. You can also start a remote download from your Game Library in the app or from PlayStation Store online. Sony’s [remote download instructions] explain the available paths and prerequisites.

4. Enable downloads while the PS5 is in rest mode
If you want downloads or updates to continue while the console is in rest mode, enable its internet connection there. On PS5, open:
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- For game and app updates, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode according to your preference. If you want to preserve a suspended game, Sony advises choosing only Auto-Download for game updates.
Automatic update settings control updates; they do not guarantee that every game will download before release. Pre-order availability and selected content determine when a pre-load can begin.

5. Review a pre-order’s download selections
For a pre-order, open Game Library on PS5 and select the game’s countdown timer to review or clear the content selected for automatic download. Sony says pre-order content starts downloading as soon as it is available when automatic downloads are set up. The exact availability schedule is title-specific, so don’t assume a particular release-hour pre-load.

Look in Downloads/Uploads to confirm the game has started downloading. Leave time for the game’s actual download and any required update: completion time depends on your connection and current service conditions, and there is no universal time estimate.

- Check PlayStation Network service status.
- On PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status and test the connection.
- Confirm that enough storage is free and that the console has current system software.
