Before replacing a motherboard, CPU, graphics card, or another major internal component, protect your files, make sure you can unlock encrypted storage, check Windows activation, and verify that the new part fits and is supported. Then prepare a safe workspace and know what to do if the PC does not start on the first try.
1. Back up files you cannot afford to lose
Copy important files to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage such as OneDrive, then check that the copies are present and accessible. Microsoft describes these as backup destinations in its Windows installation media guidance.
Do not treat a Windows restore point or a recovery key as a file backup. Cloud sync can also miss files stored outside synced folders, as well as application settings or other local data. Check the folders that matter to you and make a separate copy before opening the PC.
2. Locate your BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key
Check whether BitLocker or device encryption is enabled. If it is, confirm that you can retrieve the recovery key from another device or a separate storage location—not only from the PC you are about to modify. Microsoft describes the recovery key as a 48-digit number and notes that hardware changes can trigger a recovery prompt; see its BitLocker overview.

Keep the key somewhere separate from the computer. Microsoft Support states that it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. Its instructions for finding or backing up the key are in Back Up Your BitLocker Recovery Key.
3. Check Windows activation before changing the motherboard
Open Settings > System > Activation and note the current activation status. If your Windows digital license is eligible to be linked to a Microsoft account, do that before the hardware change. A motherboard replacement can break the device’s existing hardware match and require reactivation. Microsoft explains the process in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

Do not assume a license will transfer automatically: the outcome depends on the license and circumstances. Having your account and activation status ready can help if Windows needs to be reactivated after the swap.
4. Verify compatibility using exact model numbers
Check the documentation for the specific motherboard, processor or graphics card, case, and power supply. Similar-looking components can differ in firmware support, connector needs, or physical dimensions.

For a CPU upgrade
- Find the motherboard’s exact model and revision, then consult its CPU support list.
- Confirm that the processor generation is supported and check the minimum BIOS version required for that CPU.
- Determine whether the board needs a BIOS update before it can recognize the new processor. Follow the board maker’s instructions for the update method that applies to your model.
For a graphics-card upgrade
- Check the card maker’s recommended power-supply wattage and required power connectors for the exact card. Do not rely on a universal wattage rule.
- Compare the card’s length and thickness with the case’s available clearance, and check that adjacent slots or other components will not obstruct installation.
- Confirm that the power supply has the required connectors and that the card can be installed in the intended motherboard slot.
Manufacturer guidance is model-specific. ASUS explains graphics-card installation and fit considerations in its graphics-card installation guide; MSI’s boot and no-display troubleshooting guidance also underscores the need to follow the exact motherboard’s instructions. Check the manuals rather than assuming compatibility from the component family name alone.
5. Prepare a safe workspace and tools
Set up on a clean, dry, well-lit surface away from carpet. Before opening the case, shut the PC down, switch off the power supply, and unplug its power cord. Follow the computer, motherboard, and component manuals for the specific service steps.

Static precautions matter when handling components. AMD recommends discharging static with a grounded ESD wrist strap before handling a graphics card in its graphics-card removal instructions. A wrist strap is an optional tool, not a substitute for disconnecting power or following the device manual. Intel’s PC setup guide also covers preparing a suitable work area.

Keep your backup, BitLocker key, and any recovery media accessible. If the PC does not start, consult the motherboard or system manual and check its diagnostic lights or other debug indicators before attempting a reset or reinstall. A failed first boot does not by itself mean Windows must be reinstalled.

Windows recovery tools have different purposes and consequences. Some recovery or reinstall operations can remove apps, settings, or files, so read the option descriptions before proceeding. Microsoft explains the choices in Recovery options in Windows and its reinstallation guidance. A reinstall after a major hardware change may also require Windows activation again.
