You can prepare for higher borrowing costs without predicting when or whether rates will rise: find out which payments can change, ask lenders what a change could mean for your account, and test those payments against your actual monthly budget. The steps below apply broadly; mortgage features and consumer protections differ by country, so check the rules where you live.

1. Find out where your money goes now

Start with several months of bank and credit-card statements. Record cash purchases too, group spending into categories, and compare the totals with take-home pay. A worksheet, notebook, or budget app can all work; the important part is capturing what you actually spend rather than editing the figures to fit an ideal budget.

Include costs that do not arrive every month, such as insurance, medical expenses, tuition, gifts, vacations, and family support. Divide annual or occasional bills into a monthly amount so they do not disappear from the plan. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Get your money situation in order offers guidance on tracking spending and accounting for less frequent expenses.

If the amount left in your account does not match the budget’s projected remainder, review the transactions and adjust the budget. The CFPB advises: “If the amount you typically have left over in your bank account each month doesn’t match the amount your budget says should be left over, re-examine your spending patterns to see if you need to adjust the numbers in your budget.”

2. Identify debts that could become more expensive

Make a list of each mortgage, credit card, line of credit, personal loan, and other borrowing. For each one, note the balance, interest rate, whether the rate is fixed or variable, current minimum and usual payment, and the date the rate or deal can change. Add the lender’s contact details.

  • Variable-rate debt: The rate, payment, or share of the payment going to interest may change, depending on the product’s terms.
  • Fixed-rate debt: A fixed payment generally remains unchanged during the agreed fixed period. The payment can still change when that period ends and the debt renews or resets.
  • Credit cards and other revolving credit: Check the account terms and statements for how the rate is set and when it can change. The exact rules depend on the product and jurisdiction.

Do not assume all mortgages respond in the same way. In Canada, for example, some variable-rate mortgages have fixed payments. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) explains that if the rate reaches a contract’s trigger rate, a payment may no longer cover the interest due; unpaid interest may then be added to the balance. Ask your lender whether this applies to your mortgage and what the contract says.

3. Get a payment estimate from each lender

Use the lender’s calculator or contact the lender to ask how a higher rate would affect your payment and when the change would take effect. Ask for a scenario based on your current balance and loan terms, not just a general rate example. For a mortgage or loan with a renewal or reset date, ask what the payment could be at that point.

For a Canadian variable mortgage with fixed payments, ask specifically about the trigger rate, what happens if it is reached, and whether the lender offers ways to adjust the payment. These are questions to ask, not assumptions that a particular feature or remedy applies.

Published examples can help illustrate the arithmetic, but they are not forecasts or personal quotes:

  • Canada: In a 2025 FCAC example, a $300,000 mortgage amortized over 25 years has a monthly payment of $1,745 at 5% and $2,009 at 6.5%—a $264 difference under those stated assumptions.
  • Canada: In a separate 2025 FCAC example, a $10,000 personal loan with a two-year term and a 14.99% starting rate costs $24 more per month after an illustrated 5-percentage-point rate increase, or $552 over two years.
  • United Kingdom: The Bank of England illustrates a £130,000 mortgage over 25 years changing from £583 per month at 2.5% to £651 at 3.5%, a £68 difference. Its explainer’s publication date is not stated.

Actual payment changes depend on the balance, repayment schedule, rate terms, fees, and lender calculations.

4. Stress-test your monthly budget

Add the lender’s estimated payment to your budget as a possible scenario, not a prediction. Compare what remains after the estimated payment with essential bills, irregular costs, and any amounts you want to set aside for emergencies.

  1. Write down your current take-home income and actual monthly spending.
  2. Replace the current debt payment with the lender’s estimated higher payment.
  3. Check whether the remaining amount covers essential costs and upcoming irregular bills.
  4. Mark discretionary spending you could reduce if the scenario occurs, and decide what you would change first.

FCAC recommends reviewing a budget with new debt payments in mind. The CFPB also advises using actual spending rather than forcing numbers to match a target. If a scenario leaves too little room for bills or unexpected costs, treat that as a reason to act early—not as a reason to assume the increase will happen on a particular date.

5. Choose how to use any monthly surplus

If the budget shows money available after essential expenses and near-term bills, consider whether some can reduce debt. FCAC recommends cutting expenses where possible to free money for repayment and prioritizing the highest-rate debt. Keep enough liquidity for emergencies and automatic bills; paying extra toward debt is not practical if it leaves you short for necessities.

6. Review savings as well as borrowing

Higher market rates may be reflected in savings returns, but banks and other providers do not necessarily pass on changes immediately or by the same amount. Compare account terms as well as the headline rate, including access to funds, fees, minimum balances, and withdrawal conditions.

If you move savings to another provider, check that automatic debits and scheduled payments still have enough money available. The CFPB recommends comparing banks and credit unions; the Bank of England explains how changes in interest rates can affect borrowing and saving in the UK.

7. Contact the lender before a payment is missed

If a possible payment change may be unaffordable, contact the lender early. Explain when the payment could change, what your budget can manage, and ask what options may be available. Depending on the country, product, and circumstances, a lender may discuss different ways to manage payments, but no particular option is guaranteed.

Local credit counselling or debt-advice services may help you understand your choices. Their availability and the rules that apply vary by location. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority describes mortgage support for borrowers facing payment difficulty; in Canada, FCAC advises people to be proactive and seek help rather than wait. Any temporary arrangement may have later costs or consequences, so ask how it affects your balance, interest, credit record, and future payments before agreeing.
