Prepare before the storm by weatherizing your home, planning for frozen pipes and several days without power, and checking that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms work on battery backup. During the storm, follow local alerts, use fuel-burning equipment only outdoors, and avoid unnecessary travel and overexertion while clearing snow.
Prepare your home before the storm
Keep cold air out
Use insulation, caulking, and weather stripping to help keep cold out. Before temperatures drop, learn how to protect your pipes from freezing. The national guidance does not give plumbing steps suited to every home, so ask your water utility or a qualified local plumber for methods that fit your plumbing and climate.
Plan for a household emergency
Make a household emergency communication plan so everyone knows how to get in touch if separated. Check the forecast and warnings, and sign up for your community’s alert system. Ready.gov also names the Emergency Alert System and NOAA Weather Radio as ways to receive alerts. Follow current local instructions, which may reflect conditions in your area.
Gather supplies for several days
Plan to stay home for several days without power. Gather supplies for each person, including needed medications, and account for pets. Keep flashlights, a radio, and extra batteries available; choose equipment that will work if household power is out.

Check alarms and choose a warm-up location
Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and make sure they have battery backup. A battery-backed CO detector is useful during an outage, but an alarm does not make it safe to run fuel-burning equipment indoors.
Identify a nearby safe place to warm up if your home loses heat and becomes too cold. Know how you would get there in poor weather, and follow local emergency instructions about travel or shelter.

Stay safe during a power outage or extreme cold
Use backup heat safely
Never operate a generator, grill, camp stove, or fuel-burning heater indoors. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home. Use fuel-burning equipment only in a safe outdoor setting, following its instructions and local guidance. FEMA/Ready.gov emphasizes carbon monoxide prevention alongside alarm readiness; see its WinterReady social media toolkit.

Conserve warmth and watch for cold-related illness
If the power goes out, close off unused rooms to concentrate heat in the areas you use. Dress in layers, stay dry, and limit time outdoors. Watch for signs of cold-related illness and seek help if someone becomes unwell. If the home is too cold to remain in safely, use the warm-up location you identified and heed local instructions.
