The steps below draw on U.S. federal guidance for power outages; your utility’s notice is the source for local timing and instructions.
1. Confirm the outage details and make a household plan
Check your utility’s notice for the expected date and time window, which services will be affected, and any access or safety instructions. National preparedness guidance does not specify the schedule or procedures for a particular utility’s planned work.
Walk through what your household relies on that uses electricity. Include medical or assistive devices, phone charging, cooking, refrigeration, water pumps if applicable, heating or cooling, and home safety systems. Note what needs a backup, what can wait, and whether anyone may need to stay elsewhere.
Gather essential supplies for several days, check what you already have, and make a household communication plan. Keep a paper copy of important contact details and instructions in case phones or internet access are unavailable. Ready.gov’s power-outage hazard information sheet recommends planning ahead and checking supplies regularly.

2. Prepare phones and other communications
Charge phones and other essential electronics before the outage. Have an alternative charging method, such as a charged power bank, and check how long any existing backup power is expected to last. If you depend on a landline or other phone service, find out whether it relies on local infrastructure that could be affected; Ready.gov warns that landline phones may not work if lines are damaged.
Decide which devices and contacts matter most if backup power is limited. A short interruption and a longer outage call for different plans, so use the utility’s estimated window when deciding what to charge and what to conserve.

3. Plan for medical needs, medicine, and water
Electricity-dependent medical equipment
If anyone uses a device that needs electricity, make a plan with their doctor before the outage. Ask what to do if power is unavailable, how long any battery backup is expected to last, and whether relocating to a place with power is necessary. Do not wait until the outage begins to resolve a device-specific plan.
Refrigerated medication
Ask the prescribing doctor or pharmacist how to handle each refrigerated medication if it spends time at room temperature. Instructions vary by medication; there is no safe universal time or temperature rule to apply to every product.

Water
Follow local water advisories. If your household needs an emergency supply or a powered water system may be affected, have bottled water available and follow directions from local authorities.
4. Protect refrigerated and frozen food
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed during the outage and use thermometers to monitor temperatures. Ready.gov gives these general food-safety references: a refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours, and a full freezer will stay at a safe temperature for about 48 hours. These are approximate guidance figures, not a guarantee for every appliance or household.

Ready.gov advises throwing away refrigerated food exposed to 40°F or higher for more than 4 hours. Its power-outage sheet puts the decision plainly: “When in doubt, throw it out!”

Lighting
Put flashlights, lanterns, and other battery-powered lights where household members can find them easily, and check that their batteries are ready. Ready.gov advises against using candles for outage lighting because of the fire risk.

Heat and cold
Check the forecast and consider how your home responds without heating or cooling. In extreme heat, identify an air-conditioned place to go; in cold conditions, consider spending the coldest part of the day somewhere heated. Include children, older adults, pets, and anyone especially sensitive to temperature in the plan.
6. Use backup power and fuel-burning equipment safely
Generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills produce carbon monoxide. Ready.gov says to use them outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings such as windows, doors, or garages. Never use a gas stovetop, oven, grill, or dryer to heat the home, and never run a vehicle in a garage to generate power or warmth.
Use a generator only as directed. It may not be able to power every appliance at once, so decide which loads are essential rather than assuming the whole home can run normally. A safe setup depends on the equipment, electrical arrangement, and applicable requirements; do not guess at generator sizing or connection methods.
Unplug appliances and electronics to reduce the risk of damage from electrical surges; use surge-protection devices where appropriate. Check that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have battery backup if they are hardwired. Ready.gov recommends alarms on every level of the home and near sleeping areas.
