Trail-running shoes generally do not need a traditional break-in period. They should feel comfortable out of the box; before a long hike, check the fit and take a few shorter walks or hikes to spot rubbing or pressure while there is still time to reassess.
Do trail-running shoes need to be broken in?
Usually, no. REI says trail-running shoes should fit well out of the box, without a break-in period. That differs from stiffer backpacking or mountaineering boots, which may benefit from being worn and walked in before a trip. A painful or rubbing trail shoe is not automatically going to improve with more wear.
There is no universal mileage or number of days to follow. Treat short outings as a way to check fit, not as a prescribed schedule or a way to force an unsuitable shoe to fit.
How to check the fit before your hike
- Try on both shoes. Feet can differ in size, so choose a pair that fits the larger foot. REI recommends about a thumbnail’s length of room at the toes and a snug fit without rubbing. Laces should hold the foot securely without feeling tight. REI’s trail-running shoe guide explains the fit check.
- Try them later in the day. Feet may be larger later on. Walk around, and if possible test the shoes on an incline or uneven surface. Toe impact, pinching or persistent rubbing are reasons to reassess the fit rather than assume the shoes need breaking in. See REI’s hiking-footwear guidance.
- Wear your planned hiking socks. Use the socks you expect to wear on the long hike so you assess the shoe-and-sock combination. - Take a few short outings. Try the shoes on shorter walks or hikes before committing to the long route. Pay attention to hot spots, chafing, toe contact, heel movement and pressure from the laces. Salomon also recommends short-hike testing and cautions that a shoe that does not match your foot may not be fixed by breaking it in. See Salomon’s footwear advice.
What to do if the shoes rub or hurt
Stop and identify where the problem occurs. Check that the socks are smooth, the laces are not overtightened and the foot is held securely without sliding. If pain, toe impact, pinching or repeated rubbing persists, reassess the shoe’s fit and suitability for your foot and route rather than relying on more wear to solve it.

Blister bandages, moleskin or athletic tape can be useful backup supplies; REI lists blister-care items in its day-hiking checklist. They are not substitutes for addressing a shoe that keeps rubbing.
Choose the shoe for the route, not a break-in schedule
Fit is central, but the route matters too. REI identifies terrain—light, rugged or off-trail—as well as protection, cushioning, heel-to-toe drop and width as characteristics to consider when choosing trail-running shoes. A shoe suitable for one long hike is not automatically right for another; account for the terrain, the load you plan to carry and how the shoe fits your foot.

If you are deciding between trail runners and boots, the key distinction here is flexibility: trail-running shoes are generally more flexible and do not typically need a break-in period, while stiffer backpacking or mountaineering boots may benefit from being worn and walked in before a trip. That comparison does not make either type universally best for a long hike.
