To prepare for organizational change at work, find out what is confirmed, map how it may affect your job, and ask for the information, training, and support you need. Treat preparation as an ongoing conversation: early announcements rarely answer every role-specific question, and responsibility for a well-managed change belongs to the organization as well as its employees.
What organizational change can mean for your work
Organizational change moves a workplace from its current state toward a desired one. It can involve strategy, structure, technology, processes, culture, responsibilities, workflows, or reporting relationships. A new system, for example, may change not only the software you use but also the steps you follow, the people who approve work, and the skills your role requires. Prosci notes that transitions involve both the technical work and the people expected to adopt new ways of working (Prosci, “Tips on How to Effectively Manage Change in the Workplace”).
Feeling uncertain or having questions does not mean you are unwilling to help. Change can unsettle familiar routines and raise reasonable concerns about workload, expectations, or job impact. Make those concerns specific enough to discuss and direct them to someone who can respond.
Prepare in six practical steps
1. Separate confirmed facts from open questions
Start by writing down what you have heard and where it came from. Ask what is changing, why it is happening, when it is expected, what has already been decided, and what remains open. Mark tentative dates or proposals as provisional rather than treating them as settled. This helps you avoid planning around rumors while making it easier to revisit unanswered questions when new details arrive.

2. Map the effects on your day-to-day work
Consider the parts of your work that could be affected. Note likely changes to responsibilities, priorities, reporting relationships, workload, systems, processes, and the colleagues or customers you support. Separate likely impacts from unknowns; you do not need to predict every consequence to prepare a useful list. Prosci recommends assessing how people are affected and involving employees early in the change process (Prosci workplace-change guidance).
3. Turn concerns into questions and requests
Instead of raising only a general worry, identify what would help you make sense of it. For example, if you are concerned about workload, ask which tasks will take priority during the transition and whether deadlines will change. If a new tool is involved, ask when training will be available and where you can practice. This makes it easier for a manager or project contact to respond constructively.

4. Find the right person for each answer
Your manager may be best placed to discuss team priorities, while HR may handle employment questions and a project or training contact may know the details of a new system. Ask who owns each topic and how to submit questions. Some details may not yet be decided; request an update date or a channel where new information will be shared instead of assuming silence means the plan is final.
5. Build knowledge, then practice
Identify what you need to know and what you need to be able to do. Those are different needs: instructions may explain a process, but practice is what helps you apply it in real work. Request relevant training, documentation, access, or a low-risk opportunity to try the new workflow before it becomes routine.

Prosci’s ADKAR model is an individual-level checklist: Awareness of why change is needed, Desire to participate, Knowledge of what to do, Ability to apply it, and Reinforcement to sustain the new way. It is not a complete organizational change-management method; organizations also need sponsorship, planning, communication, support, and follow-through.
6. Check how the change is working after launch
After a new process or system goes live, note what is usable, where work gets stuck, and whether the training prepared you for actual tasks. Ask how to report problems and when the team will review progress. Prosci identifies speed of adoption, utilization, and proficiency as ways to measure how a change is taking hold, and emphasizes reinforcement after launch (Prosci workplace-change guidance).

Questions to ask your manager
Choose the questions that match your role and the information you still need. You do not have to ask them all in one meeting.
- What is changing, and why is it happening now?
- What is the expected timeline, and which dates are firm?
- What has been decided, and what remains open?
- How might my responsibilities, priorities, reporting line, or workload change?
- What skills or training will I need, and when can I practice?
- Who can answer questions about my role, and how should I raise concerns?
- How will we know whether the new way of working is functioning, and when will we review it?
These questions address the need for clear communication about why a change is happening, its impact on employees, and the longer-term outlook—topics Prosci highlights in its guidance for change managers (Prosci, “Change Management Success”).

What employees, managers, and leaders each contribute
As an employee
Describe concrete effects on your work, ask for the information or practice you need, and share feedback through the stated channel. Keep track of questions that remain unanswered so you can raise them when circumstances or plans change.
As a manager
Managers help translate organizational information for their teams, listen to questions, coach employees, and connect them with the right support. If you are a manager, distinguish what is confirmed from what is still being worked out, and follow up rather than guessing when you do not know an answer.
As an organizational leader or sponsor
Leaders need to visibly support the change, build a coalition, and communicate why it matters. Prosci says, “Active and visible sponsorship has been the top contributor to change success in Prosci research since 1998.” That is Prosci’s account of its own research, not a guarantee that sponsorship alone will make a project succeed (Prosci workplace-change guidance).
What Prosci’s figures do—and do not—show
Prosci reports relationships between change-management practices and project outcomes in its own research. These figures can illustrate why sponsorship and reinforcement matter, but they are not universal forecasts for your job or a promise about a particular change.

- Prosci’s workplace guidance, updated August 7, 2026, says projects with effective change management are up to 7 times more likely to succeed. The page frames this as an association in Prosci’s research, not an individual employee’s odds of success (source).
- The same page reports that 81% of participants who planned reinforcement met or exceeded project objectives, compared with 15% who did not plan for reinforcement (source).
- Prosci’s change-management-success page reports that 79% of projects with extremely effective sponsors met objectives, compared with 27% with extremely ineffective sponsors; 59% of participants using a structured methodology achieved good or excellent change-management effectiveness; and 88% of participants with excellent change management met or exceeded project objectives (source).
These are Prosci-reported findings, not independent estimates of how often employees experience organizational change or what any one person should expect. The sources do not establish a population statistic specifically measuring how individual employees should prepare.
