To prepare for engineering studies, build strong foundations in mathematics and science, try hands-on design projects, and explore what engineers do. Algebra, geometry, Algebra II and pre-calculus are useful preparation; calculus can help when it is available, but it is not a universal high-school admission requirement. Exact course expectations vary by university and country, so check the current guidance for each program you may apply to.
Which math classes should you take?
Prioritize a steady sequence that helps you understand and use the underlying concepts, rather than rushing into advanced classes without mastering the foundations. Oregon State recommends algebra, geometry, Algebra II and pre-calculus, followed by calculus if available. It says calculus can be helpful, but is not necessary to become an engineer. Princeton also emphasizes broad math preparation, advising students not to neglect Algebra II and pre-calculus while taking calculus when feasible.
If your school does not offer calculus or another advanced course, ask a counselor about the strongest available sequence, approved dual-enrollment options or local enrichment. Do not assume a course or credit will transfer or satisfy prerequisites at every university; confirm placement and credit policies with your target programs.
What science courses are useful?
Physics is a particularly useful part of engineering preparation, and chemistry is important for some programs. Biology may also be included in a school or university’s recommended preparation. There is no single science sequence that applies to every engineering applicant.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, the University of Texas at Arlington recommends four years of science, including biology, chemistry and physics, plus an elective. Cornell Engineering lists calculus, physics and chemistry in its expectations for applicants. These are institution-specific examples, not a shared national admissions rule.
How can you explore engineering through projects?
Hands-on activities let you practice applying classroom ideas to real problems. Oregon State suggests career and technical education courses such as manufacturing, electronics, robotics, engineering technology and computer-aided design. Depending on what is available locally, you might also try robotics, SkillsUSA, maker, coding or drone clubs.

A useful project does not have to be elaborate or require special equipment. Treat it as a design process rather than a one-shot build:
- Define a problem. State what you want to improve or make work better.
- Identify constraints. Note limits such as time, materials, size, cost or safety.
- Consider alternatives. Sketch or describe more than one possible solution.
- Build a prototype. Make a simple version that lets you explore whether an idea works.
- Observe and revise. Record what happened, adjust the design and test it again.
- Optimize. Decide which version best meets the original goal and explain why.
This approach reflects the National Academies’ description of engineering design as iterative, open to multiple solutions, and a way to connect science, mathematics and technology with modeling and analysis. Keeping notes on sketches, tests and revisions can help you explain your decisions later.

How should you learn about engineering fields?
Engineering includes different disciplines and kinds of work. Research majors and related occupations, and talk with engineers, engineering students or university advisers to understand what people study and do in the fields that interest you. Oregon State encourages conversations with people in engineering; UC Merced’s advising guidance also recommends researching majors and asking questions of people in the field.
Pay attention to skills beyond technical coursework, too. UC Merced highlights writing, engineering mathematics, study habits and time management as useful preparation. You can practice these in school by explaining how you reached a solution, keeping a manageable schedule for long assignments and asking for help when a concept is unclear.

Why do university requirements differ?
Admissions advice from one university should not be treated as a rule for every engineering program. Cornell Engineering gives its own applicants expectations that include four units of mathematics with calculus, physics and chemistry; it describes computer science and biology as recommended rather than required. Oregon State says high-school calculus is not necessary to become an engineer, while emphasizing preparation in foundational mathematics. Princeton generally does not prescribe a fixed high-school program for its context and advises students to take as much mathematics as they can while maintaining a strong foundation. UTA provides its own recommended course preparation.
These sources describe U.S. institutions. Course names, school systems and admissions processes differ elsewhere, so students outside the United States should use local guidance and the requirements published by their intended universities.

How to check your preparation against target programs
- Make a shortlist. Identify a few institutions and engineering programs you might apply to.
- Read each program’s current admissions guidance. Check required and recommended high-school subjects, including any stated math or science prerequisites.
- Check placement and credit policies separately. Admission, first-year course placement and transfer or dual-enrollment credit are not necessarily the same question.
- Compare requirements with your school’s offerings. If a course is unavailable, ask a counselor and the university about acceptable alternatives rather than assuming an equivalent.
- Recheck before applying. Use the institution’s current official guidance, since requirements and policies can change.
