Before you travel, check the official status page, alerts, or recorded message for the court handling your case. Unless the court confirms that your hearing has been postponed or changed, follow the instructions in your current hearing notice. Closures and remote-hearing rules vary by court and case type, so a general closure announcement may not tell you what will happen to your hearing.

Check whether your specific hearing is going ahead

  1. Use the court’s official channels. Check the court handling your case for closure notices or alerts, review your hearing notice, and call a recorded information line if the court provides one. The New York State Unified Court System’s 5th Judicial District lists its websites, X account, and recorded phone message as closure channels and offers court alert signups: 5th Judicial District court information.
  2. Check again near departure. Status announcements can change. Confirm the latest notice before setting out, especially if travel is difficult or conditions are worsening.
  3. Look for information about your courthouse and case type. Do not assume a general closure headline applies to every location or hearing. Read the court’s instructions to see whether they address your particular proceeding and whether it is in person, by phone, or by video.

Closure policies can treat remote proceedings differently. Maine’s Judicial Branch says a weather closure postpones all court events covered by its policy, including remote criminal and civil hearings, mediations, and settlement conferences. It also identifies an exception: remote traffic trials proceed unless the Violations Bureau is listed as closed. That is Maine-specific guidance, not a rule for courts elsewhere. See Maine Judicial Branch: Remote Court Proceedings.

If you cannot attend or need another format

Contact the clerk promptly and ask what procedure applies to your case. Find out whether you need to file a motion or form, how to file and serve it, and whether a deadline applies. Do not assume that a request changes your hearing date or attendance requirement.

Requesting a postponement

Requirements depend on the court and type of case. Maryland’s civil and family guidance, for example, calls for a written motion and says to file as soon as the need arises. It also directs self-represented litigants to free help centers. Check the applicable instructions with the court; Maryland’s process is not universal. See Maryland Courts: filing and fee-waiver information.

Requesting remote attendance

Ask whether remote attendance is allowed for your proceeding and how to request it. In Washington, DC, the civil guidance says to file a motion to request remote attendance and to appear as currently noticed until the judge rules. A pending request is not confirmation that you may skip an in-person hearing. See DC Courts: Remote Hearings.

Prepare if your hearing is scheduled remotely

Use the platform and instructions identified by the court, not a link or app suggested by an unofficial message. California Courts recommends preparing in advance and contacting the clerk or a self-help center if you are unsure what to do. Its guidance includes these practical checks:

If you do not have reliable internet or a device

Tell the local court as soon as possible and ask what alternatives, if any, are available. Some courts may provide computers or tablets at a court location, but availability is not guaranteed. Minnesota’s court guidance recommends contacting the local court if you lack stable internet or a device: Minnesota Judicial Branch: Remote hearings. Ask specifically whether a phone appearance or a court-site connection is possible for your hearing; do not assume either option is permitted.

Keep your hearing materials together

Keep the hearing notice, filed papers, and copies of any proposed exhibits in one place so they are easy to find. A folder or accordion file can be a simple way to organize paper documents. This is an optional convenience, not a court requirement. For remote hearings, the court’s evidence submission and service instructions determine what you must send, how, and when.
