You can preinstall an Xbox game only when that title and platform offer the option; a preorder does not guarantee that the full game is available to download early. On PC, use the Xbox app to find and install the PC version, and check the game’s own system requirements and available storage before downloading.
How preinstalling works
Preinstall availability and timing depend on the individual game and platform. Microsoft’s publishing documentation describes a pre-download date for background downloads when that functionality is enabled; it does not establish that every preorder receives a full pre-load. Check the game’s official Store listing or Xbox app for a pre-install option and whether the full package is available. Microsoft Learn explains the publisher-controlled pre-download capability.
Before starting, compare the game’s displayed size with the free space on the drive you intend to use. Microsoft’s pre-order installation documentation says the process directs customers to a drive with enough space for the full package. Read Microsoft’s pre-order documentation.
Install an Xbox game on a Windows PC

Open or install the Xbox app for PC, then find the PC version of the game. Xbox describes the app as a way to browse, download, and launch PC games, including titles in the Game Pass library. Game Pass is a separate subscription; having the app does not itself include a subscription or every game.

Check the game’s own PC system requirements before installing. The Xbox app’s stated baseline is Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage for the app, and a 720p display. Those requirements apply to the app, not to the game; game files require additional storage and each title may have different hardware requirements. See Xbox’s PC app requirements.

Choose an installation location if the app offers one, then verify the destination has room for the game’s displayed package size. External or removable storage is not supported universally: Microsoft says publishers can disable removable-storage installation for a particular PC game. Check that title’s available install-location options rather than assuming an external drive will work. See Microsoft’s documentation on game installation locations.

Start the installation in the app and use its displayed status to monitor progress. A download-time estimate cannot be inferred reliably from the game’s size alone; it also depends on the connection and other conditions.
Choose an installation drive
Use the location the game actually permits and that has enough free space for its full package. For PC installs, compare eligible drives by capacity and convenience, and consider whether you want the game library on internal or removable storage. Publisher settings determine whether removable storage is available for an individual game. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish comparative speed results for particular drives, so do not assume a specific external drive will make a download or game run faster.

Find a purchased game that is missing after release
If a released Microsoft Store game is missing from your library, open its Store listing. Microsoft advises selecting Install if that button appears. If you are unsure whether the purchase completed, check your Microsoft account order history. For digital preorders, Microsoft says payment using Microsoft account funds is charged immediately; other payment methods may be charged up to ten days before release. On an Xbox console, use the game’s official Store listing or Xbox app to check whether a pre-install option is offered for that specific title. Confirm the displayed size and selected drive’s free space before starting. Pre-download dates and availability are conditional, rather than a promise that every preorder can be fully installed before launch.

Remote-install setup, console power-state requirements, and current queue controls are not established here with reliable, current menu paths. Consult Xbox Support’s live instructions for your console and app before changing those settings; do not rely on a guessed button sequence.
