Start with the speakers arranged symmetrically around your main listening seat, then adjust their spacing, distance from walls, and toe-in while listening from that seat. Keep the tweeters near seated ear height where practical. These are starting points, not fixed rules: the speaker manual, room, and listening preference determine the final placement.

Start with the speaker manual and the room

Check the placement guidance for your specific speaker before moving it. Cabinet design, port location, and other model differences can affect recommended wall clearance and toe-in; general advice should not override the manufacturer’s instructions. Focal and Cambridge Audio both stress adapting placement to the speaker and room (Focal; Cambridge Audio).

Room size, reflective surfaces, and your preferences also affect what works. In a small room, Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics says aiming the speakers down the longer dimension may help bass reproduction, but closeness to the side walls can compromise image clarity. Treat that as an option to test, not a universal rule.

How far apart should the speakers be?

Begin with balanced left and right positions and a roughly equal-sided triangle connecting the two speakers and your main seat. This gives you a useful baseline for stereo imaging and a centered vocal. Teufel describes an equilateral triangle as a reliable phantom-center starting point, while Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics recommends starting with a slightly narrower triangle in some setups. Try both rather than assuming either geometry is best for every room.

Recommendations for speaker spacing vary by source and setup. Teufel Support suggests about 2.4 m between floorstanding speakers; Fyne Audio’s Technical Director, Dr Paul Mills, gives a range of 1.5–4.5 m. Neither figure is an industry-wide standard. Follow your speaker’s manual and use the geometry as a starting point.

What is the ideal distance from the wall?

Give speakers some room from walls and corners if your space allows. Nearby boundaries can increase bass, while hard surfaces can contribute reflections. Move the speakers incrementally and judge the result from your listening seat: if bass is too strong or boomy, try moving them farther from a wall; if it is too weak, moving them closer may help. The size and direction of the change depend on the room and speaker.

Manufacturer figures illustrate how much guidance differs. Teufel Support suggests about 60–120 cm from the wall behind the speakers and 60–90 cm from side walls, presenting these as minimum distances. Fyne Audio guidance gives at least 1 m from side walls and 0.5 m from the rear wall. Apply neither set as a universal rule; check your model’s current manual and work within your room’s constraints.

Avoid placing speakers in corners as a default. If furniture or room dimensions limit your options, use the best balanced positions available and evaluate the bass from the main seat.

Should you angle the speakers toward the listening position?

Toe-in—the inward angle of each speaker toward the listening seat—is adjustable. A modest amount can sharpen the center image, while too much may narrow the listening area or make the soundstage feel restricted.

As starting examples, Teufel suggests about 15° and Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics cites 10–15° as usual guidance. Axiom Audio recommends changing toe-in in small increments and comparing center focus with stage width. These are not mandatory angles: test the result in your room.

How high should the tweeters be?

When practical, position the tweeters near ear height while you are seated in your usual listening position. Teufel gives approximately 91–106 cm as a specific reference range, but the right height depends on your seat, listener, and speaker. Treat the range as guidance rather than a universal target.

Fine-tune one change at a time

  1. Mark a baseline. Note the speakers’ positions and toe-in so you can return to a setup that works. A tape measure can help make adjustments repeatable, but it is not required.
  2. Choose familiar music. Use material with a centered vocal and bass you know well.
  3. Change one variable. Move both speakers a few centimeters forward or back, or adjust their separation or toe-in in small steps. Keeping left and right positions balanced makes comparisons more useful.
  4. Listen from the main seat. Check whether the vocal stays centered, bass sounds controlled rather than boomy or thin, and the soundstage feels coherent at a natural width.
  5. Keep the better position and repeat. Compare bass balance, center focus, and stage width or listening area together. The position with the strongest bass may not deliver the clearest stereo image; the goal is a compromise that sounds right to you.

When speaker placement is not enough

If the sound remains harsh or muffled after you have adjusted placement, consider whether room reflections are contributing. Curtains, carpets, cushions, and other soft furnishings affect reflections; Focal recommends considering absorptive or reflective materials when harshness or muffling persists (Focal; Cambridge Audio; Fyne Audio). Dedicated treatment is a conditional option, not a required purchase or substitute for testing placement.

Model-specific placement is different

Some advice applies only to a particular design. Klipsch Support, for example, specifies placing Klipsch Jubilee speakers on a common wall 12–15 feet from the main listening position. Do not transfer that distance to other speakers; consult the instructions for your own model.
