There is no universally best subwoofer location: room shape, furnishings, and your listening seat all affect the bass you hear. Start by trying a front-of-room position near the main speakers and a corner. If neither sounds balanced, use the subwoofer crawl to find a better candidate, then listen again from your usual seat.

Why subwoofer position changes the sound

Low-frequency sound interacts with a room’s boundaries and dimensions. Reflections and room resonances can make bass louder at some locations and weaker at others, even when the subwoofer’s settings stay the same. A peak can make a few notes sound boomy; a cancellation, or null, can make bass seem weak or missing.

As SVS explains, placement depends on room size, layout, and acoustics. The best position is therefore the one that works at your intended listening seat or seats—not necessarily the location that produces the most bass everywhere in the room.

Where to start: the front of the room or a corner

Try a front position

Place the subwoofer near the main speakers if the room allows. Play familiar music with a repeating bass line, or other bass-rich material you know well, and listen from your normal seat. Pay attention to whether bass notes sound consistent and defined rather than whether the overall level is simply loud.

Compare a corner

A corner can increase output because the nearby walls reinforce the sound. It can also excite room resonances, so a corner may sound louder without sounding more even. Treat it as another position to audition, not a guaranteed optimum. Keep the subwoofer’s driver and port unobstructed.

Compare locations from the seat where you actually listen. If several seats matter, check each one: a position that works well for one listener may not provide the same balance across the whole seating area.

How to do the subwoofer crawl

The crawl is a practical, listening-based way to identify candidate locations. It reverses the usual arrangement: instead of moving the subwoofer and listening from the seat, you temporarily put the subwoofer at the seat and listen at possible subwoofer locations.

  1. Choose the listening position. Identify your main seat and the floor locations where the subwoofer could reasonably fit.
  2. Put the subwoofer at or near the seat. You may need a longer signal cable to connect it there; whether you do depends on the room and your existing cable.
  3. Play familiar bass material. Use the same music or other content you used to compare the initial positions.
  4. Listen at candidate locations. Move around the places where the subwoofer could go, listening near floor level. Look for bass that sounds smooth and defined, without a few notes dominating or disappearing.
  5. Move the subwoofer to a promising spot and retest. Listen from the normal seat, then check other important seats if you use them. The crawl identifies candidates; the final check is how the subwoofer sounds from the listening area.

Use care when moving a heavy subwoofer, and avoid blocking its driver or port at the new location. The Audioholics crawl guide describes the method and notes that a longer signal cable may be needed.

How to judge the result

  • Smoothness: Bass notes across a familiar line should be reasonably consistent rather than alternating between overpowering and faint.
  • Definition: Bass should sound distinct, not like a lingering one-note boom.
  • Useful extension: Listen for the low notes present in the material without assuming that more output at one frequency means better placement.
  • Coverage: If more than one seat matters, compare from each. A location optimized for one seat may not be best for the full seating area.
  • Practical fit: Account for furniture, walkways, available cable length, and unobstructed airflow around the subwoofer.

The trade-off is often between maximum output and evenness, or between the best response at one seat and acceptable bass across several. A corner may provide more output; another location may sound more balanced at the seats you use.

If no location sounds right

Try a small seat adjustment

If you cannot move the subwoofer—or your seat falls in a peak or null—shift the listening position a small amount and listen again. A modest change in where you sit can alter how room modes affect the bass you hear.

Set up the system after choosing a location

Once you have selected a position, calibrate the subwoofer level, crossover or bass-management settings, and phase as directed by your receiver and subwoofer manuals. These controls and their labels vary by model. Phase and delay interact with the room and speaker system, so assess their effect rather than assuming a particular setting will improve the result. The Audioholics setup guide covers basic setup considerations.

Use equalization for remaining peaks

If your receiver offers room correction or equalization, use it to address remaining peaks after trying placement and seating changes. EQ can reduce peaks, but it should not be assumed to repair a deep cancellation null; adjusting placement is the better first response to a weak spot. See the Audioholics technical placement article and placement guidelines for further discussion of placement and room response.
