You can play TV sound through an Echo’s AUX input only if that exact Echo model supports 3.5 mm audio input and your TV has a compatible analog audio output. Connect the devices with a stereo AUX cable, select the TV’s audio output if needed, and enable the Echo input in the Alexa app if it is disabled. An Echo’s 3.5 mm jack may be an output rather than an input, so check both devices before buying a cable.

Check that the TV and Echo have compatible audio ports

Look up the exact Echo model in its specifications or Alexa app and confirm that its 3.5 mm jack supports line-in. The presence of an AUX jack alone does not confirm that it accepts audio: some Echo jacks are outputs, and many Echo models do not have an AUX input. Amazon does not provide a complete current model list in the sources cited here, so verify the model you own rather than relying on a general Echo-family rule.

Next, check the TV’s manual or port labels for an analog audio output that matches the Echo’s input. TV connections and audio-menu labels vary by model. A headphone jack or another analog output may be suitable, but confirm the TV’s output type and the Echo’s input requirements before connecting them.

If both devices have compatible 3.5 mm analog ports, use a stereo 3.5 mm male-to-male AUX cable. A cable cannot convert a digital-only TV output or make an Echo output jack work as an input. If the TV has only optical or HDMI audio, an adapter or converter would need to match the TV’s signal format, the Echo input, connector direction, and any power requirements; there is no universal adapter recommendation established here.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Connect the TV to the Echo’s AUX input

  1. Confirm the ports: Verify that the TV port is an analog audio output and the Echo jack is a supported AUX line-in.
  2. Connect the cable: Plug one end of the stereo AUX cable into the TV’s analog output and the other into the Echo’s line-in.
  3. Select TV audio output: If required, use the TV’s sound settings to send audio through the connected analog output. The exact menu path varies by TV.
  4. Enable AUX input on the Echo: Use the Alexa app to enable the supported input if it is disabled. App controls may vary by model; consult the device’s instructions rather than assuming one menu path applies to every Echo.
  5. Play TV audio and check the result: Start a program and adjust the TV’s output or volume settings as needed. If there is no sound, check the connection, selected TV output, and Echo input configuration.

Voice commands no longer switch AUX on certain Echo models

As of October 6, 2026, Ars Technica reported that Amazon had disabled Alexa voice commands for controlling AUX input on the Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo (3rd Gen), Echo Studio (1st Gen), and Echo (4th Gen). Commands such as “Alexa, set aux input” and “Alexa, play from line in” no longer work on those affected models, according to the report. The physical inputs still work, and the Alexa app can still enable or disable a supported input. See Ars Technica’s report on the AUX voice-control change.

Use HDMI ARC only as a separate alternative

Alexa Home Theater over HDMI ARC is not an AUX connection. It may be an option if you have a compatible Fire TV, a supported Echo configuration, and a TV with HDMI ARC. Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater setup instructions direct users to connect the compatible Fire TV to the TV’s ARC-labeled HDMI port, enable HDMI ARC, and possibly enable HDMI CEC. TV sound settings may need to be set to HDMI output.

Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater compatibility guide distinguishes setups that can play sound from other HDMI sources, such as a game console or cable box, from configurations limited to Fire TV audio. Check the exact Fire TV and Echo models against the guide; ARC does not guarantee that every TV source will play through the Echo.

If HDMI ARC setup produces no sound, Amazon recommends checking that the TV supports ARC, the Fire TV is connected to the ARC-labeled port, ARC is enabled, and the TV’s sound output is set to HDMI. The TV audio format may need to be set to PCM or Stereo; for Echo Studio, Amazon lists Bypass, Passthrough, or Auto as possible setting labels. Labels vary by TV brand. See Amazon’s HDMI ARC troubleshooting steps.

What to check when AUX does not work

  • No sound at all: Confirm the TV port is an output, not an input, and the Echo jack is line-in, not audio-out.
  • The TV has sound, but the Echo does not: Check that the TV is sending audio to its analog output and that AUX input is enabled in the Alexa app where available.
  • The TV has only optical or HDMI ports: Do not connect them with a passive 3.5 mm cable. Identify a converter that specifically supports the TV’s output format and the Echo’s input before purchasing.
  • You want sound from a game console or cable box: Check the Fire TV and Echo combination in Amazon’s Home Theater compatibility guide; some ARC setups support only Fire TV audio.

Echo Link and Echo Link Amp are not generic TV audio inputs: Amazon says they do not support TV or video connections. Their supported analog inputs do not change that limitation. See Amazon’s Echo Link connection guide.
