If you have the legacy GTA Classics Steam pack, use Rockstar’s settings-file instructions. If you have another legitimate copy, the DOSBox project recommends installing with the game’s Windows installer and running its DOS edition through DOSBox. A community-made Windows package, GTA Ready2Play, offers a more convenient setup, but the available sources do not establish that its bundled game files are authorized.
First, make sure you have the right Grand Theft Auto
This guide is about Grand Theft Auto, the original game released in 1997—not Grand Theft Auto III or the later trilogy. DOSBox identifies it as a DMA Design game published by BMG Interactive. The original PC release has Windows and DOS versions, which matters because the DOSBox route runs the DOS edition.
Choose a route based on the copy you own

Use Rockstar’s instructions for an existing Steam copy
If you already own the legacy GTA Classics Steam pack, Rockstar’s support article explains how to change the original game’s settings and controls. The installation folder is under Steamsteamappscommongrand theft auto. On 64-bit Windows, the Steam library may be under Program Files (x86).
- Open the GTA installation folder in your Steam library.
- Locate and launch the game’s settings file, as described in Rockstar’s settings instructions.
- Adjust the available settings or controls there, then start the game using the launch method provided with your copy.
These steps reflect Rockstar’s support article, last updated June 20, 2023; they apply to the legacy pack it documents, not to every PC release.

Run the DOS edition through DOSBox
The DOSBox project’s guidance is to install the game with its Windows installer first, then use DOSBox to play the DOS version. This is a practical option if your legitimate copy includes the relevant installer and DOS files.
- Install Grand Theft Auto using the Windows installer included with your copy.
- Set up DOSBox and point it to the installed DOS game files, following the DOSBox project’s game-specific guidance.
- Launch the DOS edition from DOSBox and adjust the emulator configuration if the game has display, audio, or performance problems.
The DOSBox compatibility listing marks the game as supported, but it also preserves older user reports of crashes, sound trouble, and slow performance. “Supported” is not a guarantee that one configuration will work on every current Windows PC.

Consider Ready2Play with care
PC Gamer reported on February 8, 2026, that GTA Ready2Play is a community-made Windows compatibility bundle containing the base game and both expansions. Reported features include language options, widescreen support, audio fixes, updated DirectDraw handling, and a portable launcher. Project creator LukeStorm described his goal as getting the Windows version working with improved compatibility without a conventional installation; that describes the creator’s aim, not an endorsement by Rockstar.
The available reporting does not establish Rockstar’s authorization for the bundled game files. Rockstar’s general legal terms reserve rights in its content, but they do not resolve the status of this specific package or the rules that apply to an individual user. Use files you are entitled to use and check the rules where you live. The PC Gamer article also says the creator had not personally tested Steam Deck or Linux; user reports of trying those platforms are not controlled compatibility results.

Is the original available on GOG?
As accessed on October 7, 2026, GOG’s page for the original Grand Theft Auto is a Dreamlist asking users to vote to bring the game to the storefront. That is not a released GOG listing or evidence that you can currently purchase the game there. Store availability can change, so check GOG’s Dreamlist page for its current status.

What to check before you start
- Which copy you own: The Steam-specific settings instructions are for the legacy GTA Classics pack; the DOSBox route concerns the DOS edition.
- Setup effort: Rockstar’s settings-file directions address settings for an existing Steam copy. DOSBox requires emulator setup; Ready2Play aims to package compatibility changes but comes with the file-authorization caveat above.
- Platform: The documented DOSBox instructions cover the DOS edition. Ready2Play’s reported Linux and Steam Deck use should not be treated as verified testing.
- Expansions: PC Gamer reports that Ready2Play includes both expansions; the cited Steam and DOSBox guidance does not establish the same for every copy.
- Physical media: If buying a used disc, check the individual listing for authenticity, completeness, and condition. A disc is not a promise of easy installation on a modern machine.
