You can try running the original 2001 Black & White on Windows 10 or 11 using the Black & White Community’s installation guide, which starts with the original game disc or a mounted disc image and applies a specific patch sequence. A second option, the open-source openblack project, reimplements the game engine but still requires the original game files. Neither documented route guarantees compatibility with every current PC.
What you need before you start
- Original game media or files: The community installation guide starts with a clean Black & White disc in an optical drive or mounted as an ISO. openblack also requires the original game assets and does not distribute them. The openblack project explains its asset requirements.
- Administrator access: The community guide says most installers and the game need administrator rights.
- A place to install: The guide recommends installing to the C: drive.
The guide describes an installation method; it does not establish that the original game is currently in print or available from a particular retailer. Avoid unofficial downloads claiming to provide the full game.

Install the original game on Windows 10 or 11
Follow the Black & White Community’s Windows 10/11 guide for its full instructions. Its recommended sequence is:
- Use a clean original disc in an optical drive, or mount a disc image, and install the game. The guide recommends the C: drive and administrator rights for most installers.
- Install patch 1.1, then patch 1.2, then the unofficial patch 1.42, in that order. The community guide specifically says not to install patch v1.3; this is its recommendation, not an official publisher instruction.
- Use the fan patch’s setup utility to select a resolution and maximum detail, as described in the guide.
- Run
runblack.exeas administrator. The guide advises against enabling Windows Compatibility mode.
If the game has no music, the community guide recommends copying the Audio folder from the CD. These are community-documented directions, not a guarantee that every installation or hardware configuration will work.

What the patches change
The bw1-patches repository documents binary fixes for Black & White and Creature Isle. The listed changes include:
- A windowed-mode fix.
- A fix intended to prevent low-resolution textures caused by VRAM overflow on graphics cards with 2 GB or more.
- Corrections to detail-level and CPU-speed detection.
- An adjustment to landscape draw distance.
- A fix for official add-ons on Windows Vista and newer.
- Redirecting save files to the Documents folder.
- Widescreen presentation fixes.
These are behaviors documented by the repository, not results independently verified on current hardware. The patches target an unprotected executable. The repository says the game normally ships packed with SecuROM and that extracting an unprotected executable is outside its scope; the patching tool does not provide the game or original files.
Use openblack if you want a modern-engine route
openblack is an open-source reimplementation of the 2001 game’s engine, written in modern C++ and using OpenGL or Vulkan rendering. It is distinct from patching the original executable, and its repository provides developer-oriented build instructions for Windows and other platforms.
This is a more technical path than following the community installation sequence: you need the original installer and game assets, as well as the tools needed to build the project. openblack does not provide copyrighted game data and describes extracting the Audio, Data, and Scripts folders from the original files. Check the project’s current documentation for its build and asset instructions before proceeding.

- Wage massive wars, sieges and battles or use your skill and power to keep the peace
- Discover and use new Epic Miracles, including the ground-ripping Earthquake and volcanoes, which cause rivers of lava
- Choose and customize the Creature that's right for you from a selection, including old favorites such as the Ape, Cow, and Lion
- Research and create new forms of weaponry, from swords to bows to siege machines
- Create and control settlements that include housing, farming, and many other buildings like fountains and lush gardens (if you're Good) or spikes and torture pits (if you're Evil)
Troubleshoot Windows compatibility problems
Microsoft notes that older programs can encounter compatibility issues as Windows changes. Its general guidance is to check for updates and, if an app has no update, run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. This advice is not specific to Black & White; the Microsoft guide to older apps and Windows compatibility explains the general steps.
For this game, start with the game-specific sequence above rather than assuming the Windows troubleshooter will fix it. The community guide specifically advises against Compatibility mode, so do not override that recommendation without a reason to test a different configuration.

Search results can mix up the original Lionhead game from 2001 with a separate game also titled Black & White. The Steam support listing identified in the available documentation is for a different game by ZerocreationGame/CubeGame, released in March 2023, with Simplified Chinese support. Confirm the developer and release details before following instructions or looking for files; that listing is not the original Lionhead game.
