The Operator is a detective investigation game: you support FDI field agents by checking evidence, searching records, and connecting clues—not by directly controlling agents in the field. Its mobile edition was reworked for a mobile interface, and the official store descriptions direct players to tap through the investigation tools.
What you do in a case
Agents contact you for support as they investigate crimes such as murders, missing-person cases, and cyberattacks. Your job is to answer their questions using the evidence and information available in the FDI software. The official Google Play description sums up the task as evaluating evidence, digging into documents, connecting clues, and solving mysteries: Google Play listing.
A typical case-solving approach is to clarify what the agent needs to know, inspect the supplied material, choose a relevant tool, compare what the sources establish, and report the best-supported finding. This is a practical way to approach the activities described by the publisher, not a walkthrough of any particular case or a guarantee that every case follows the same steps.
Use the tool that fits the evidence
The official listing names five tools: the Video and Photo Analyzer, Citizen and Vehicle Database, ChemScan, Notepad, and Terminal. The work may involve examining visual evidence, looking up a person or vehicle, querying evidence, recording connections, or using the terminal where relevant. Follow the request and the evidence rather than assuming a tool or answer from the case premise.

Track details and contradictions
As you work, note names, dates, and inconsistencies in the Notepad. A detail that seems minor in one document may matter when compared with another record or an agent’s request. The publisher’s description emphasizes following leads and connecting information, but it does not publish the correct solution for every case.
The listing’s warning about not entering unauthorized areas without notifying superiors is part of the game’s fictional guidance; it is not real-world investigative advice.

Mobile controls and interface
Bureau 81’s Steam announcement, dated October 1, 2026, says the game was “Reworked to fully support a mobile interface”: Bureau 81’s Steam mobile announcement. The Apple and Google Play descriptions likewise tell players to tap through the FDI software. In practical terms, expect a touch-oriented interface for opening the tools and examining evidence.
The official materials do not document a complete gesture map or exact button-by-button controls. They do not establish specific swipe, drag, long-press, or zoom gestures, so do not rely on those as required inputs based on the published descriptions alone.

Optional controller support
The US Apple App Store listing marks the game as controller-supported and names compatible PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi controllers. A controller is optional—the store’s basic interaction description is tapping through the software. Cases and progression
The official listings describe multiple cases, requests from field agents, evidence to evaluate, and a story that deepens as you follow leads. They do not provide a verified total case count, complete case order, unlock requirements, save behavior, or precise progression triggers. Treat the case structure as investigation-led, rather than assuming a fixed chapter sequence or that one particular action unlocks the next case.

- Read the agent’s request. Identify the specific question you need to answer before searching through tools.
- Inspect the material you have. Review the supplied evidence and documents instead of guessing based on the crime or story premise.
- Choose a relevant FDI tool. Use the visual analyzer, citizen or vehicle records, ChemScan, Notepad, or Terminal as the evidence and request call for.
- Compare and record. Check names, dates, and apparent contradictions across the evidence, and note useful connections.
- Report the best-supported finding. Give the agent what the evidence supports, then follow any new leads that emerge.
