You can play The Elder Scrolls: Arena on a Windows PC using Bethesda’s free Windows download or the Steam version. Bethesda’s Windows package includes DOSBox and separate launch options for windowed and full-screen play, so you generally do not need to install DOSBox separately.
Get Arena from Bethesda or Steam
Bethesda offers the full game from its official Arena page. Alternatively, Steam lists The Elder Scrolls: Arena as Free to Play (checked October 7, 2026). The available sources do not establish a technical gameplay difference between these downloads, so choose the official source that best fits how you manage games.
Install and launch the Windows version
- Download the game. Use Bethesda’s official page or the Steam listing.
- Install it. Bethesda’s documented default installation path is
C:Program Files (x86)Bethesda SoftworksArenaArena; your installation may be elsewhere. Bethesda says the installer creates Start menu shortcuts when possible. - Choose a launch option. Bethesda’s Windows installation includes two batch files: one for full-screen play and one for windowed play. Try the other option if the first behaves badly; neither is documented as universally more compatible.

Why DOSBox is included
Arena is a DOS game. Bethesda’s Windows distribution uses DOSBox to run it, and Bethesda says DOSBox is installed with Arena. Its default configuration is intended to work with the majority of hardware setups, but that is not a guarantee for every current PC. If the game does not start
- Confirm that installation completed and launch from the installed game folder or the Start menu shortcut, if one was created.
- Try the other supplied batch file: switch between windowed and full-screen launch.
- Avoid assuming that a separate DOSBox installation or a particular configuration change is required. Bethesda says it does not support DOSBox itself: “Bethesda Softworks does not provide support for this program.”
- If you choose to adjust DOSBox, the DOSBoxWiki Arena page lists community configuration ideas, including cycle and memory adjustments. These are community suggestions, not Bethesda-supported fixes or guaranteed solutions. DOSBox documentation is the relevant next stop for emulator-specific issues.
What Steam’s requirements do—and do not—tell you
Steam lists the following minimum requirements, expressed in original-era terms:

These are the specifications Steam lists for the game, not a compatibility guarantee for a particular modern Windows release, handheld, or DOSBox build. The official step-by-step setup guidance cited here is for Windows; exact macOS, Linux, and handheld instructions are not established by these sources.
