To play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online with friends, open Online → Smash → Battle Arenas and create or join an arena. Everyone needs an internet connection, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the same game version. Choose Quickplay instead if you want matchmaking—or if two people sharing one console want to play online together.
What you need before you start
- Nintendo Switch Online: Each player needs a Nintendo Account with an active membership to use the game’s online features. Nintendo lists the service as paid and names Super Smash Bros. Ultimate among the games that require it for online play. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online FAQ.
- Internet access: Connect each console to the internet before opening the game’s online modes.
- Matching game versions: Nintendo says all players must use the same software version to play together. Its update page lists Ver. 13.0.5, released September 1, 2026; check the current version on each console because updates can change. See Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update instructions.
How to create or join a Battle Arena
- Start the game and choose Online from the main menu. Acknowledge the online-play notice if it appears.
- Choose Smash.
- Select Battle Arenas to create or join an arena with custom rules. Use the arena options shown on-screen to set up or find the session.
- Choose a supported controller, select your fighter, and select Ready to Fight.
Nintendo’s public setup guide documents creating and joining arenas, but does not specify a friend-specific password, room code, or invitation sequence. Follow the current in-game prompts rather than assuming a particular access method. Local Wireless is a separate mode, not the online arena flow. For Nintendo’s menu instructions, see How to Start a Local or Online Multiplayer Game.
Battle Arenas or Quickplay?
| Mode | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Arenas | Playing custom-rule matches in an arena you create or join | Use the arena controls and on-screen prompts to set up or enter a session. |
| Quickplay | Matchmaking | Nintendo says two-player Co-op from one console is available in Quickplay battles only. |
Nintendo’s setup guide describes online play as one to two players per console. Its product listing describes online play as two to four players overall; these figures use different scopes, so do not read the product-page total as a per-console allowance. See Nintendo’s game listing.
Choose a controller
Nintendo lists Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and Nintendo Switch/GameCube controller options. A wired GameCube controller requires a GameCube Controller Adapter. You do not need to buy an additional controller or accessory if you already have a supported setup.

If you cannot enter an online battle
- Confirm that the consoles have internet access and that each player’s Nintendo Switch Online membership is active.
- Check that everyone has updated the game to the same version.
- If the message says “You Cannot Play Online Battles Right Now,” Nintendo says the connection could not continuously send or receive data. A slow or unstable connection, wireless interference, or unresponsive networking equipment may contribute.
- For further connection or error-code steps, use Nintendo’s error-code support.
