You can play Steam games on an Android phone or iPhone without a computer beside you, but the method matters: Steam Link streams from a computer running Steam, while NVIDIA GeForce NOW can stream eligible Steam games from the cloud. Steam Link therefore still needs a host computer; GeForce NOW is the option to check when you have no local PC available, and it does not support every Steam game.
Which option works without a PC?

How to stream Steam games to your phone with Steam Link
Steam Link is not a mobile version of the Steam PC game. The host computer executes the game, while Steam Link sends the picture and sound to your phone and returns your inputs to the computer. Valve describes it as real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. See Steam Remote Play for current platform support and requirements.
- Install Steam Link. Get the app from the app store for your Android phone or iPhone. Check Valve’s Remote Play page for current supported platforms and minimum operating-system versions.
- Prepare the host computer. Sign in to Steam on the computer that will run the game, and leave Steam running.
- Pair your phone. Open Steam Link and follow its prompts to connect to the computer. Valve provides mobile setup guidance for Android and Apple devices.
- Choose a game and start streaming. Select a title from your Steam library. The game runs on the computer; the phone acts as the display and controller interface.
- Choose how to control it. Try the touchscreen controls or connect a compatible controller. Check support for both your phone and the individual game in Valve’s Android controller guidance and Apple controller guidance.
How to play without a local computer using GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW is the cloud-streaming route to investigate if you mean that no gaming computer is available to host the session. NVIDIA says you can connect game-store accounts and access owned games that are supported on its service. Start with NVIDIA’s setup guide, then verify the exact game in the live catalog.
Check the exact title before relying on it
Owning a game on Steam does not by itself make it playable through GeForce NOW. Developers opt games into Steam Cloud Play, and NVIDIA’s Install-to-Play category also depends on publisher participation. See Steamworks’ Cloud Play documentation and NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ. Catalog listings and eligibility can change, so search the live catalog rather than assuming a Steam title is supported.

Understand the game categories and account setup
NVIDIA distinguishes Ready-to-Play titles from Install-to-Play titles. Some Install-to-Play features require a premium membership; persistent storage is an optional add-on. Check the current details in NVIDIA’s FAQ before choosing a plan. To sync your Steam library, NVIDIA requires game details and playtime to be public. If you prefer not to enable that setting, you can look up titles manually in the catalog. See NVIDIA’s account-sync guidance.
- Verify the specific game is currently listed and available in your region.
- Check whether the catalog identifies it as Ready-to-Play or Install-to-Play.
- Review the current membership requirements for the game and features you want.
- Confirm your phone, browser, or app is supported using NVIDIA’s current setup information.
Do you need a controller?
No. Steam Link offers touchscreen controls, but a controller can make games designed for a gamepad easier to play on a phone. Compatibility depends on the controller, the phone, and the game. Check Valve’s mobile controller support information before buying an accessory; it does not endorse a particular controller model.
