Play current Roadhog by treating Chain Hook as a deliberate displacement tool, using the right Scrap Gun fire for the distance, and taking cover while Take a Breather helps you recover. The live kit no longer includes Pig Pen: Blizzard removed it in August 2025 and restored classic primary and secondary Scrap Gun fire. In April 2026, Blizzard increased Hook’s cooldown from 6 to 8 seconds and Scrap Gun’s reload time from 1.5 to 1.75 seconds, making careless Hook attempts and missed follow-ups more costly.
What changed in Roadhog’s current kit?
Blizzard’s current Roadhog hero page lists him as a tank with Scrap Gun, Chain Hook, Take a Breather, and Whole Hog. It also lists two minor perks—Scrap Hook and Shrapnel Launcher—and two major perks—Hogdrogen Exposure and Pulled Pork. The displayed PC key bindings are defaults; your own controls may differ.

The sequence of changes matters because older guides may describe abilities and numbers that are no longer current. The November 2023 rework introduced Pig Pen and a resource-based Take a Breather. In its August 29, 2025 patch notes, Blizzard removed Pig Pen, moved Take a Breather to Ability 2, restored classic primary and secondary Scrap Gun fire, and added Pulled Pork. The April 2026 update then increased Hook’s cooldown and Scrap Gun’s reload time, removed Invigorate, and added Hogdrogen Exposure.
How to use Hook for a meaningful combo
Hook is most valuable when pulling an enemy changes the fight: it can displace an exposed opponent or bring a target into allied follow-up. It is not a guaranteed elimination button. Use the sequence below as a decision guide rather than a promise of a kill.

- Choose a target with a reason to pull. Look for an opponent who is separated, exposed, or about to enter Hook range. Consider whether your team can follow up and where the target will end up.
- Hook when the displacement helps. A pull that leaves the target protected or unsupported may spend the cooldown without creating useful pressure.
- Follow with Scrap Gun at close range. Hook brings the enemy toward Roadhog, where the weapon’s short-range primary fire is relevant. The official ability descriptions do not establish a universal damage breakpoint or guarantee a one-shot; armor, mitigation, movement, and allied actions can all affect the outcome.
- After a miss, play as if your threat has changed. Hook’s cooldown is 8 seconds under the April 2026 changes, up from 6. Use gun pressure and cover while it is unavailable instead of stepping forward as though another pull is ready.
Blizzard said the April 2026 changes were intended to make the combo less frequent and Hook use more deliberate. The same update increased Scrap Gun reload time from 1.5 to 1.75 seconds.
Which Scrap Gun fire should you use?
The current hero page describes primary fire as a short-range spread weapon. Secondary fire launches a medium-range projectile that explodes into the short-range primary fire. In practical terms, use primary fire when a threat is close; use secondary fire to pressure from farther away. Shrapnel Launcher can extend secondary-fire range and tighten its burst spread, making it an option when you expect to fight beyond primary-fire range.

Roadhog can create pressure without immediately using Hook. Holding a corner or constrained angle lets his close-range weapon threaten opponents who approach, while the possibility of a pull can make crossing that angle risky. This is tactical guidance inferred from the weapon and Hook descriptions, not an official map-specific rule or a claim about tested match results.
Where should Roadhog position?
Look for cover near an approach or choke where enemies may come within weapon or Hook range. Expose yourself briefly to threaten a shot or pull, then return to cover when Hook is unavailable or opponents can focus you. A retreat path matters: Roadhog’s self-heal and damage reduction can help him recover, but they do not make extended exposure safe.

- Use cover to limit incoming angles. Avoid walking into several opponents’ crossfire when one corner can reduce how many can attack you at once.
- Judge a Hook by the landing spot. A pull is more useful when your team can exploit the target’s new position; avoid spending it just because an enemy is in range.
- Threaten space rather than claiming to shield it. Roadhog has no barrier in the listed current kit. His frontline presence comes from weapon threat, positioning, self-healing, and the ability to pull an opponent—not from absorbing all incoming fire for teammates.
How to survive with Take a Breather
Take a Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage taken. Use it when incoming pressure makes its defensive effect useful and the recovery helps you continue contesting space. If you activate it after moving too far from cover, opponents may keep focusing you; timing depends on the enemy’s burst, allied support, and the state of the fight rather than a single universal rule.
Blizzard’s August 2025 notes moved the ability to Ability 2 and documented that Ability 1, primary fire, and secondary fire can cancel it when it is toggled, with a minimum time before cancellation of 0.6 seconds. Whether those inputs apply to your setup depends on your control configuration. The current hero page notes that displayed PC keys are defaults and can be changed.

How the four current perks change your plan
The official hero page lists two minor and two major perks. Their effects suggest different priorities; these are situational choices, not a universal ranking.
| Perk | Current effect | When it may suit your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap Hook (minor) | Restores 2 ammo when Hook hits. | Consider it when you expect to land Hooks and want ammunition for immediate follow-up. |
| Shrapnel Launcher (minor) | Extends secondary-fire range by 50% and tightens its burst spread by 25%. | Consider it when you often need to pressure opponents beyond primary-fire range. |
| Hogdrogen Exposure (major) | Take a Breather heals nearby allies for 50% of its healing. | Consider it when teammates are close enough to benefit and team sustain matters. It is not a substitute for support healing or a reason to remain exposed. |
| Pulled Pork (major) | Grants overhealth based on Hook pull distance, up to 300. | Consider it when longer pulls are realistically available and added personal durability is useful. |
The current hero page lists Pulled Pork’s maximum as 300. The August 2025 patch notes described its initial version with a 250 maximum, so use the current page rather than the older patch value for the listed live perk effect.

Blizzard’s November 14, 2023 developer comments described the original rework’s broad goal as improving Roadhog’s frontline presence while reducing frustration from how consistently deadly his Hook combo had been. That rework’s ability setup is historical context, not the current kit: Pig Pen was later removed, classic Scrap Gun fire returned, and Take a Breather’s placement changed.
For current play, the practical result is a Roadhog who pressures approaches with close- and medium-range gunfire, uses Hook selectively to create valuable displacement, and relies on cover and Take a Breather to stay in the fight. Balance can change after the April 2026 update, so consult Blizzard’s current hero page and later live patch notes for any subsequent changes.
