You can play retro games on a CRT without a VHS tape or VCR: connect the console directly to a compatible input on the TV. The cable you need depends on the console’s video output and the inputs available on your CRT. For example, Nintendo documents composite AV, S-Video, and component connections for the Wii; Wii mini supports Wii AV cables only.
What you need for a direct connection
Before buying a cable, check the input sockets on the back or side of the CRT and the output supported by your console. Both ends must support the same connection type. Connector shape alone is not enough: an adapter that fits may not convert one video signal to another.
- Identify the TV’s inputs, using the labels printed beside the sockets and the TV manual if needed. Make sure you are looking at inputs, not outputs.
- Check the console model and its supported video output in its manual.
- Choose a cable made for that console and connection type, then select the matching input on the TV after connecting it.
Nintendo’s Wii connection instructions offer a concrete example of how the available cable paths depend on both the console and TV.
Which cable should you use?
| Connection | What must match | How to identify it |
|---|---|---|
| Composite AV | The console must provide composite output, and the CRT must have composite inputs. | Commonly uses yellow for video and red and white for audio. Sony documents this arrangement in its composite connection instructions. |
| S-Video | Both the console and CRT must support S-Video. | Uses a separate S-Video connection, with audio connected separately. Nintendo documents an S-Video option for Wii in its Wii setup guidance. |
| Component | The console must provide component video, and the CRT must have Y/Pb/Pr inputs. | Video uses green, blue, and red plugs; red and white plugs carry audio. Sony shows the wiring in its component connection instructions. |
| RGB/SCART | The console must output RGB in a format supported by the TV, and the CRT must have a compatible RGB/SCART input. | Availability and cable format depend on console and region. Analogue describes analog cable formats in its video cable guide; check the manuals for both devices. |
These are different signal paths, not interchangeable plug styles. The cited setup documentation establishes supported connections, but not a universal picture-quality ranking across all consoles and CRTs. Start with compatibility and the easiest suitable connection to set up.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connecting a Wii directly to a CRT
- Inspect the CRT for composite, S-Video, or component inputs and note the labels. Nintendo’s Wii instructions tell owners to locate the TV’s audio/video and component input jacks.
- Choose a Wii cable that matches an input on the TV. Nintendo says its Wii component cable is sold separately. It also specifies that Wii mini is compatible only with Wii AV cables, not the component cable.
- Connect the cable to the Wii and match its plugs to the corresponding TV inputs. For component, connect the Y/Pb/Pr video plugs to the matching green, blue, and red jacks, and connect red and white audio plugs to the audio inputs. For composite, connect yellow video and red/white audio plugs to their matching inputs.
- Turn on the Wii and TV, then use the TV or remote’s input selector to choose the input you connected. Nintendo’s Wii setup guidance also calls for selecting the appropriate TV input.
If you have a Wii mini, follow Nintendo’s warning: “Wii mini is only compatible with Wii AV Cables. Ensure you are using the Wii AV Cables that came packaged with the system.” Check your model and the CRT’s inputs before purchasing a cable.
Is a VCR necessary?
No. A VCR is only an optional intermediary when it has suitable audio and video inputs and can connect to the TV. If the console and CRT have matching inputs, connecting them directly avoids adding another device to the signal path. Nintendo also warns that some DVR-equipped devices digitize the input and can add a delay of up to one second, making gameplay extremely difficult; see its Wii-to-VCR guidance. Nintendo UK likewise advises checking the input sockets on both the TV and VCR in its connection instructions.

If the console and CRT do not match
Do not buy an adapter just because its plugs fit. First confirm the console’s output signal and the TV’s supported inputs in their manuals. A conversion may require a device that actively changes the signal, rather than a simple plug adapter; the connection instructions cited here cover specific compatible paths, not every possible console and CRT combination.
