PPSSPP runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its default settings are a sensible place to begin.
1. Install PPSSPP on your PC
Download PPSSPP using the official PPSSPP download page, which lists the current files for each supported platform. The official introduction describes a Windows installer or portable ZIP, a macOS DMG, and Linux Flatpak or AppImage options. Choose the current option for your system and follow the page’s installation instructions.
2. Get a PSP game file you can use
PPSSPP needs a game file; it does not provide PSP games. Its guide to playing games describes ISO disc images and compressed disc-image formats. It also explains how to use a PSP digital download copied from a real PSP, as well as free demos and homebrew.
Use a digital game already on your PSP
For a PSP digital download, the documented method is to copy the game folder from the PSP and use its EBOOT.PBP file in PPSSPP.

Make a file from your own UMD
PPSSPP’s instructions for copying a UMD require a PSP with custom firmware and a USB-Mini cable. Insert the disc, connect the PSP to the computer, select the UMD disc as the USB device in the custom firmware menu, enable USB Connection, and copy the virtual ISO file the computer can access.
Use demos or homebrew
Free demos and homebrew are other options described by PPSSPP. Avoid unauthorized game downloads. The technical instructions for copying a disc or file do not determine whether copying or using it is lawful in your location or circumstances; check applicable local rules.

3. Load the game in PPSSPP
- Open PPSSPP and go to the Games tab.
- Navigate to the folder containing the game file and select it.
- On Windows or macOS, you can also use File > Load to browse for a game.
Once selected, the game should start. If the folder is not visible, check that you are browsing to the location where you saved or copied the game file.
4. Set up controls
You can play without buying a controller. PPSSPP supports keyboard controls and many gamepads. Its controls documentation covers setup; on Windows, supported gamepad input includes XInput and DirectInput. The hardware guidance names Xbox and PlayStation controllers and some Logitech models as tested examples. A compatible PC game controller is optional if you prefer physical buttons and sticks.

5. Start with default settings, then troubleshoot performance
PPSSPP says its defaults are generally suitable. Try the game before changing graphics options, and keep your graphics drivers current. If performance is poor, check the drivers and consult PPSSPP’s graphics settings guidance, including its information about graphics backends.
PPSSPP’s hardware guidance says nearly any PC made in the last 15 years should have little to no issue. Its FAQ gives broader guidelines: a reasonably modern CPU and a GPU capable of OpenGL 3.0 should work, while Vulkan may help when available. These are general recommendations, not a promise that every game will run smoothly on every computer.

Do you need a PSP BIOS file?
No. PPSSPP simulates the PSP BIOS and internal operating system, so you do not need to find or download a separate BIOS file. PPSSPP also does not run the PSP XMB menu; it launches games through its own interface. See the PPSSPP FAQ for the explanation.
