The best-supported alternative to a PlayStation Portal for portable PS5 gaming is a compatible phone running Sony’s free PS Remote Play app. For built-in physical controls, pair the phone with the Backbone One PlayStation Edition that matches its connector; if you already own a compatible phone or tablet and a supported PlayStation controller, try that setup first. In every Remote Play option, your PS5 runs the game and streams it to the screen—you are not running PS5 games locally on the phone.

A Windows PC or Mac is another officially supported Remote Play screen, though it is less pocketable. Portal itself is also worth understanding before you choose: it can stream from your PS5, and, separately, stream select eligible PS5 games from the cloud with PlayStation Plus Premium.

What can I use instead of PlayStation Portal?

Use a compatible phone with PS Remote Play, adding a controller if you want physical controls. A tablet, Windows PC or Mac can also serve as the screen. The key decision is whether you want to buy a phone controller for a compact, handheld-style setup or start with devices you already have.

Remote Play sends video and audio from your PS5 to another device and sends your controls back to the console. The PS5 remains the source of the game, so it must be set up for Remote Play and connected to the internet. The app and a controller do not give you console-free access to your PS5 library.

That distinction matters when comparing alternatives with Portal. Portal has two different uses: Remote Play from a paired PS5, and cloud streaming for select eligible PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium. The cloud option does not require your PS5 to be connected or powered on. It is a Portal feature, not a way to use the PS Remote Play mobile app as a cloud-gaming app.

Which alternative should I choose?

Choose based on the hardware you own and how you want to hold and control the game—not on unverified performance comparisons. A phone with a fitted controller is the clearest handheld-style recommendation; a phone or tablet with a PlayStation controller is the sensible first try if you already own both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about the total new spend as well as the shape of the setup. If you already own a compatible phone and controller, trying Remote Play first may require no new hardware purchase. If you want controls physically attached to the phone, a phone controller is an added purchase, but no current price comparison is established here. A tablet trades pocketability for a larger screen; a computer offers a supported screen but is less like a one-piece handheld. Choose the form factor that fits how you intend to play rather than assuming a bigger display or dedicated grip improves streaming performance.

1. Compatible phone + Backbone One PlayStation Edition

Choose this if you want a phone-based setup with physical controls attached on both sides of the screen. The PlayStation Edition is the directly documented Backbone model for the official Android PS Remote Play app. Backbone says that app recognizes its PlayStation Edition Backbone One on Android, not its other Backbone models. Generic controller compatibility is not a reason to assume another model will work with that app.

Match the connector to the phone. The second-generation USB-C version is for compatible USB-C phones; the Lightning version is for compatible Lightning iPhones. Backbone lists different supported iPhone models, so check the exact phone and controller variant before buying. The USB-C model has a direct phone connection, pass-through charging and fit adapters, but those features do not remove the need to confirm that your particular phone fits and is supported.

For an Android phone, look specifically for the Backbone One PlayStation Edition USB-C if you want the model Backbone identifies for Sony’s official Remote Play app. Do not substitute a standard Backbone One or Backbone Pro based only on a general claim that it works as a game controller. For a compatible Lightning iPhone, the Backbone One PlayStation Edition Lightning is the connector-matched variant. Check both device compatibility and fit before placing an order: connector type alone does not establish that every phone is supported.

This setup still relies on Remote Play from your PS5. It can make the phone feel more like a handheld, but it does not turn it into a portable PS5 or give it Portal’s cloud-streaming catalog. If your priority is a larger screen rather than a one-piece handheld feel, a tablet may be a better fit, though it is less pocketable.

2. Existing phone or tablet + DualSense or another supported PlayStation controller

If you already have a compatible mobile device and a PlayStation controller, try them before spending on a dedicated phone controller. Sony supports PS Remote Play on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and Android tablets, and mobile devices can also use on-screen controls. Sony lists minimum operating-system versions for supported mobile devices; check its current compatibility guidance before installing.

Controller support and features depend on the device and operating system. Do not assume every controller feature works identically across iOS and Android, or that a controller paired with one device will behave the same on another. A tablet gives you a larger viewing surface than a phone, but trading pocketability for screen size is a practical form-factor choice, not a measured performance advantage.

This is the lowest-commitment choice when the required hardware is already in your home. It also gives you a straightforward way to see whether your network and preferred games work well for your needs before buying a phone attachment. A DualSense wireless controller is a reasonable item to try if you own one, but verify the current instructions for your mobile operating system and remember that supported features can differ by platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also try the app’s on-screen controls if you do not have a supported controller to hand. That avoids buying a controller before you know whether Remote Play suits your situation, though the available guidance does not establish that on-screen controls suit every game equally well. If the controls feel awkward, or you want a more handheld-like grip, consider a supported physical controller afterward.

3. Windows PC or Mac + a supported PlayStation controller

A computer is an official Remote Play option if you want to play away from the television but do not need a pocket-sized device. Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge support for Windows and Mac. Its platform-specific instructions explain how to connect the controller.

A computer’s built-in keyboard or a handheld PC’s built-in gamepad should not be assumed to work as a supported PlayStation controller just because the device runs Windows. Sony’s listed controller compatibility is the safer basis for planning. This route also remains Remote Play: the PS5 runs the game, and the computer acts as the screen and control endpoint.

Think of this as a supported screen alternative, not a handheld recommendation. It can be useful if you already own a computer and want to play away from the TV, but it does not solve a need for a pocketable, self-contained device. As with the mobile choices, the console and network remain part of the setup.

What about a Steam Deck or another gaming handheld?

Treat a Steam Deck, Windows gaming handheld or Android gaming handheld as a conditional option rather than a confirmed plug-and-play Remote Play solution. The documented support here does not establish model-specific built-in-control compatibility or certify third-party clients as official PS5 solutions. If you are considering one, verify the exact model, app or client, controller mapping and setup requirements independently before relying on it.

That uncertainty is different from Sony’s listed Remote Play support for compatible phones, tablets, Windows PCs and Macs. A device may be capable of running software that streams a PS5, but that alone does not establish official app compatibility or guarantee that its integrated controls will work as expected.

In particular, do not assume a Steam Deck’s built-in controls or a third-party streaming client are officially supported simply because the device can run software. The same caution applies to products such as Logitech G Cloud, ROG Ally or Razer handheld hardware: the available compatibility information does not establish a model-by-model ranking or plug-and-play guarantee for PS5 Remote Play. If you are set on a gaming handheld, confirm the exact setup rather than buying on the assumption that generic Android or Windows support settles the question.

Does Remote Play need a PS5?

Yes. PS Remote Play streams from your own PS5, so a compatible app and controller are not enough by themselves. You need to enable Remote Play on the console and keep it online; if you want to wake it remotely from Rest Mode, you must enable the relevant power-saving options.

For mobile Remote Play, Sony’s setup instructions use these PS5 menus:

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  2. To allow network wake-up from Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  3. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  4. Install PS Remote Play on the compatible phone or tablet and sign in with the same account used on the PS5.
  5. Select your PS5 in the app and follow its connection prompts. The device can connect over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Enabling the console settings does not guarantee that every game can be streamed or that every network will provide a usable session. Some games do not support Remote Play, and games requiring PS VR, PS VR2 or other excluded peripherals are incompatible. If the PS5 cannot be reached, confirm it is online, the settings are enabled and the app is signed in with the correct account.

Remote Play is a stream from the console, not a separate entitlement to every game in a cloud catalog. This distinction also means that the PS5’s availability and internet connection matter even when you are playing on a phone away from home. If you need to play without the PS5 connected or powered on, ordinary Remote Play is not the mode to choose.

What internet speed do I need?

Sony’s Remote Play guidance says a connection of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps. Those are connection requirements and recommendations, not promises about image quality or responsiveness. The usable experience also depends on the connection between the PS5 and the Remote Play device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Play can use mobile data, but streaming may consume substantial data. If you have a data cap or a limited mobile plan, connect over Wi-Fi when practical and keep an eye on your usage. A phone can work well as the screen, but a poor or restricted connection can still make Remote Play impractical.

Portal cloud streaming has separate figures in Sony’s support guidance: 5 Mbps to initiate streaming, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Do not mix these figures with Remote Play’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation; they refer to different streaming modes and are not comparative performance results.

These numbers are thresholds and recommendations from PlayStation, not measured guarantees for a particular home, hotel or mobile connection. The minimum tells you what Sony requires for Remote Play; it does not ensure that a session will be stable in every location. When considering travel, check whether the network you expect to use is accessible and reliable enough, and account for mobile-data limits as well as speed.

How is Portal different from these alternatives?

Portal Remote Play streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5, and Sony says this mode does not require PlayStation Plus. Portal cloud streaming is a separate option for eligible PS5 games and requires PlayStation Plus Premium. It can work without the PS5 connected or powered on, but it does not make every game you own streamable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On November 5, 2025, PlayStation announced that Premium members could stream select digital PS5 games from their own library. That announcement described “thousands” of supported PS5 cloud-streaming games at launch; it is a historical launch characterization, not a current catalog count. Eligibility varies by game, and the current US support page documents US availability. Check current PlayStation guidance for availability where you live and for the game you want to play.

Do not treat a digital purchase as automatically eligible for cloud streaming, or assume that the Portal cloud catalog includes PS4 or PS3 games. A phone running PS Remote Play is not a substitute for this Portal cloud feature. If console-free play is the reason you are considering Portal, a phone-based Remote Play setup does not meet that requirement.

Cloud streaming also has account and subscription conditions: Sony’s US guidance specifies PlayStation Plus Premium and an adult account, as well as an eligible PS5 game. That makes the choice practical as well as technical. If you already have Premium and the game you want is eligible, Portal may offer a way to stream without the console being online. If you are comparing a phone Remote Play setup, Premium is not a prerequisite for that mode; the PS5 is.

How we picked these alternatives

The recommendations follow official Remote Play device and controller support, documented Backbone compatibility, and how much new hardware a reader may need. The phone-and-Backbone setup ranks first because it is the clearest documented handheld-style alternative; using an existing phone or tablet and controller is the practical first step for owners of that hardware; a computer is included as an officially supported screen where pocketability matters less.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ranking does not claim that one option has lower latency, longer battery life, a better display or better overall performance. No comparable measurements for those factors are published here. Unverified handheld configurations are separated from the recommendations rather than presented as established plug-and-play choices.

We also separate what is officially documented from what may be possible with a particular third-party setup. For the main recommendations, check three things before you start: the device is supported by PS Remote Play, the controller or phone attachment is compatible with that device, and you have an internet connection suitable for streaming. For the Backbone route, add a fourth check: the connector and exact supported phone model must match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PS Plus game streaming and Remote Play at the same time?

No. Sony says PlayStation Plus Premium game streaming cannot be used simultaneously with Remote Play. These are separate streaming modes, so switching modes may be necessary if you want to use the other one.

Can I use Portal on public Wi-Fi?

Sony describes support for qualified public Wi-Fi, but access depends on the network and its requirements. Check the current Portal guidance and the venue’s network rules before relying on it while travelling.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can I connect headphones to PlayStation Portal?

Portal has a 3.5 mm audio jack and supports PlayStation Link audio devices, according to Sony. That is a Portal hardware detail; a phone-based Remote Play setup depends on the audio options of the phone and connected accessories.

Does the PS Remote Play app give my phone Portal’s cloud game catalog?

No. The app streams from your PS5, while Portal’s cloud streaming is a separate feature for eligible PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium. A Remote Play app and controller do not provide console-free access to that catalog.

Do I need a PS5 to play PS5 games on my phone?

For PS Remote Play, yes. The app streams from your own PS5, which must be enabled for Remote Play and online. The app and a controller do not independently provide cloud access to your PS5 library.

Which Backbone works with PS Remote Play on Android?

Backbone says the official Android PS Remote Play app recognizes its Backbone One PlayStation Edition, not its other Backbone models. Match the USB-C connector to a compatible USB-C phone and confirm the exact phone is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Steam Deck stream my PS5?

It may be possible through a particular third-party setup, but the documented support here does not verify Steam Deck built-in controls or third-party clients as official plug-and-play PS5 Remote Play solutions. Check the exact model, software and controls before relying on it.

Does Remote Play work with every PS5 game?

No. Sony says some games do not support Remote Play, including games that require PS VR, PS VR2 or other excluded peripherals. Check game compatibility if a particular title is the reason you are setting it up.

Do I need PlayStation Plus for Remote Play?

Sony says Portal Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus, and PlayStation Plus Premium is not a prerequisite for phone-based PS Remote Play. Premium is required for Portal’s separate cloud streaming of eligible PS5 games.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For a documented handheld-style alternative, use a compatible phone with PS Remote Play and, if you want attached physical controls, the Backbone One PlayStation Edition that matches your phone’s connector. Try a phone or tablet and a supported PlayStation controller first if you already own them. Remember that Remote Play streams from your PS5; only Portal’s separate cloud-streaming option can play eligible PS5 games without the console connected or powered on, and that requires PlayStation Plus Premium.
