You can play a gaming VOD stored in Google Drive during a YouTube livestream, but Drive does not send the live broadcast itself. Make the video available to a computer, play it through an encoder such as OBS, and send that encoder’s output to your YouTube Live event using its server URL and stream key. Test the picture and audio in YouTube’s preview before starting the event.
What you need before you start
- A gaming VOD you are allowed to broadcast, and permission to download or play it.
- A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance: YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- An encoder on a computer, such as OBS, and a reliable internet connection for continuous upload.
- The YouTube event’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your event.
Make the VOD available to the encoder
Option 1: Download a local copy
In Google Drive, open the file’s menu and choose Download, then save it somewhere you can find from your encoder. A local copy avoids relying on Drive connectivity during playback, but it uses space on the computer. Google notes that an owner can disable downloading, copying, or printing for viewers and commenters. If Download is unavailable, ask the owner for an authorized copy or access; do not try to bypass the restriction. See Google Drive’s download instructions.
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files primarily stored in the cloud or mirror them so they are stored locally and available offline. For a long broadcast, ensure the file is actually available and plays reliably before the event. Streaming saves local storage but depends on Drive and network access during playback; mirroring keeps a local copy. Google explains the modes in its Drive for desktop streaming and mirroring guide.

Set up the YouTube event and encoder
- Create or select the event in YouTube Studio. Open the livestream workflow and use the encoder option. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the event; copy them into the encoder’s stream destination settings. The exact labels and menu locations can vary by encoder version.
- Add the VOD as a playback source. In OBS, add the accessible video file as a media/playback source and select the downloaded file or the file available through Drive for desktop. Check that the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed to the stream. Media-source controls differ by operating system and software version, so confirm playback in OBS rather than assuming a particular menu option.
- Configure output conservatively. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; that is a margin above the stream’s combined bitrate, not a guaranteed minimum connection speed. Use the encoder’s current YouTube guidance for the appropriate settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate: YouTube streaming tips. Do not raise quality beyond what the connection can maintain.
- Test before the public start. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the video moves, the game audio is audible and not distorted, and the stream health is acceptable. YouTube recommends testing ahead of the event: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Start and monitor the event. Once the preview is right, start the livestream in YouTube Studio as required by the event workflow. Keep an eye on audio, video, source playback and stream health throughout the broadcast.
- End cleanly. End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder after YouTube indicates the event has stopped.
YouTube describes an encoder as the software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder setup guide lists OBS as an open-source software option; a paid encoder or dedicated hardware is not inherently required for this VOD workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Rights and YouTube Live restrictions
Having a VOD in Drive does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights for the gameplay recording and for any music, overlays, clips, or other third-party material included in it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop the content; continued playback can interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party content, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting
- The video will not download: The owner may have disabled downloads for your access level. Request an allowed copy or suitable permissions from the owner.
- The encoder cannot find or play the file: Confirm the file is downloaded or available through Drive for desktop, then test it locally before going live. A Drive share link by itself is not a playable encoder source.
- YouTube receives no video: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct event’s server URL and stream key, and that the VOD source is active in the scene. Treat the key as a credential and avoid sharing it.
- The picture or sound is missing in the preview: Verify the correct source is selected and that audio is routed to the encoder output. Test movement and sound in the YouTube preview before starting publicly.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Check that the upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate, reduce output demands if necessary, and retest with YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- YouTube interrupts the stream: Review any warning for copyright or other event restrictions, stop content you are not authorized to broadcast, and resolve the rights issue before resuming.
Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
