Confirm that the adapter supports 480p and handles stereo audio, then connect its HDMI output to the TV. The main catch: a small minority of Dreamcast games do not support VGA, so check compatibility if a particular game is the reason for your setup.
Connect a Dreamcast to a TV with HDMI
- Connect a Dreamcast VGA cable, VGA box, or Dreamcast HDMI adapter that uses the console’s VGA output. The Dreamcast can output 640×480 at 60 Hz (480p), a progressive signal that is generally sharper than interlaced S-video or RGB connections. See the community-maintained Dreamcast modern A/V guide for an overview of its video options.
- Connect the adapter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on your TV. VGA-to-HDMI conversion is directional: the source must be VGA and the display HDMI.
- Connect stereo audio as the adapter requires. Some designs use separate audio connectors or a 3.5 mm input; check the particular product rather than assuming HDMI video also means audio is connected.
- Select that HDMI input on the TV and start a game. If there is no picture or the game does not start, check whether that game supports VGA and whether the adapter accepts 480p.
For example, Pound Technology describes its Dreamcast HD Link as converting the console’s native VGA signal to HDMI and warns that some non-VGA-compatible games will not work. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not independent test results; availability and behavior vary by model. See the Dreamcast HD Link product page.
Choose the connection based on your games and setup
| Option | Signal path | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreamcast VGA-to-HDMI adapter or cable | Dreamcast VGA (480p) to HDMI | A straightforward connection to a TV with HDMI | Games without VGA support may not display correctly; confirm audio handling and 480p support. |
| VGA breakout/dongle plus compatible scaler | Dreamcast VGA/RGBHV to scaler, then digital video to TV | People who want scaler processing or to use one scaler with multiple retro systems | More equipment and setup; the dongle alone does not scale the image. |
| Standard-definition analog connection plus matching scaler | Composite, S-video, or component, depending on cable and scaler | Trying a game that does not support VGA | Generally a less sharp image than VGA; verify the scaler accepts the cable’s signal. |
| Internal HDMI modification | Hardware installed inside the console provides an HDMI path | Owners seeking an internal solution and comfortable with console modification or professional installation | Advanced installation, potential tradeoffs, and kit availability to verify. |
When to use a retro scaler
A scaler is optional: a modern TV does not automatically require one if a VGA-to-HDMI adapter meets your needs. A dedicated scaler can provide image-processing choices and accept signals from multiple older systems, but it adds hardware and requires checking that its inputs match the Dreamcast connection.
Dreamcast VGA and RetroTINK-5X Pro
RetroTINK’s Dreamcast HD15 dongle passes the console’s 480p RGBHV signal and has a 3.5 mm stereo audio connection. It is intended for a compatible scaler, not as a standalone HDMI converter or upscaler. RetroTINK states: “The Dreamcast dongle is only configured to operate in 480p mode.” Check the HD15 dongle specifications and the scaler’s supported inputs before connecting it.

The RetroTINK-5X Pro specifications list 480p input and digital output modes through 1080p. Its manufacturer lists approximate latency of 0.25 frames in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Those output modes do not mean the Dreamcast is generating 1080p or 4K source detail.
Do not use the RetroTINK-2X Pro for 480p VGA
The RetroTINK-2X Pro accepts standard-definition composite, S-video, and component modes, but its manufacturer says it does not accept 480p or higher. It is therefore not the scaler to pair with a Dreamcast’s VGA output. It may be relevant to a standard-definition connection for a game that does not support VGA, provided the cable and scaler inputs match.

What to check before buying
- Target-game compatibility: VGA is not supported by every Dreamcast game. The modern A/V guide describes a small minority as lacking support; it is not a definitive game-by-game compatibility database. Check the particular title before choosing a VGA-only path.
- Signal and direction: Confirm that the adapter accepts the Dreamcast’s 480p VGA signal and outputs HDMI. A VGA-to-HDMI converter is not interchangeable with an HDMI-to-VGA converter.
- Audio: Find out whether the adapter takes audio through separate connectors or a dedicated input and what cable you need.
- Processing and lag: Adapter and scaler processing varies. Generic VGA-to-HDMI adapters can differ in scaling, latency, color, and compatibility with particular TV combinations, according to the community A/V guide. Do not assume a product is lag-free based on an HDMI label.
- Complexity and cost: A simple adapter, a VGA breakout plus scaler, and an internal modification involve different equipment and setup. Verify current product availability, exact specifications, and total cost before purchase.
Try another output if a game will not work over VGA
If the display is blank or a specific game will not run through a VGA-only connection, first check that title’s VGA support. If it lacks support, try a standard-definition output the game supports, such as composite or S-video, and use a scaler that accepts that input. The image is generally less sharp than VGA, but this can provide a path for games that do not work with VGA. Check compatibility for the specific game, console, cable, and scaler rather than assuming every alternate setup works.

An internal HDMI mod takes a signal from inside the console instead of adapting its VGA output externally. Dreamcast.wiki describes RetroGEM as the continuation of the DCDigital/DCHDMI product family and notes that installation is delicate and may involve tradeoffs, including loss of access to the serial port. See the Dreamcast HDMI mods discussion, then verify current kit availability and installer support before choosing this route.
