One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can play Doom on a digital camera, but there is no universal camera version: each port is built for a specific model and firmware. The most fully documented current route is Doom550D for the Canon EOS 550D (also called the Rebel T2i or Kiss X4), on Canon firmware 1.0.9 with a matching Magic Lantern build. A separate CHDK port targets the Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70 on firmware 1.02a. Neither project makes its game binary interchangeable with other cameras.
Choose a port that matches your exact camera
Start by checking the camera model and firmware version, then find a Doom port explicitly built for that combination. Having Magic Lantern or CHDK installed is not enough: the game binary also depends on camera-specific firmware, memory, display and input details.
| Port | Documented target | Key requirements | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doom550D | Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i / Kiss X4; Canon firmware 1.0.9 | Compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 core and 550D_109.sym; Doom-compatible IWAD on the card |
Experimental; its documentation says not to install the release binary on another camera or firmware version. |
| sd1000-doom | Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70; firmware 1.02a | CHDK 1.6 for that target, a bootable SD card no larger than 2 GB formatted in-camera, and shareware DOOM1.WAD |
Camera-specific standalone port; its memory, palette and controls are tied to the SD1000 implementation. |
DigitaOS DOOMD.CAM |
Some late-1990s Kodak and other DigitaOS cameras | A compatible DigitaOS camera; Kodak DC290 requires firmware 1.0.4 or later. | Historical compatibility documentation; Kodak DC220 is excluded for insufficient RAM, and current availability is not established. |
Install Doom550D on the EOS 550D
Follow the Doom550D release documentation for the exact files and compatible build. The module is experimental, so first confirm the camera is already running the matching Magic Lantern setup and preserve a backup of the card.
- Back up the SD card and confirm Magic Lantern works normally on the EOS 550D.
- Verify that
autoexec.binand550D_109.symare from a compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 build. Keep these files and the Doom module from compatible builds together; a module built against different exported symbols may fail to load. - Copy the Doom550D release module to
ML/MODULES/doom.mo. - Create
ML/DOOM/if it does not exist, then copy a legally obtained, supported IWAD file into it. - Choose the WAD in Magic Lantern’s Games menu. Restart the camera after changing the selected WAD, then start the game.
The module does not include Doom or its game data. The project lists Freedoom, Doom shareware, and commercial Doom + Doom II releases as possible sources for compatible data; those options have different licensing terms.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
IWADs and game types
The module names these Doom-family IWAD files: doom1.wad (shareware), doom.wad (Doom / The Ultimate Doom), doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, freedoom1.wad, freedoom2.wad, and freedm.wad. Support is not the same as support for every Doom-related file: PWAD/mod selection is not implemented, and Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Doom 64, PK3 files and source-port-specific IWADs are unsupported. Hacx 1.2 is recognized by filename but is not playable in the current module because the required embedded compatibility patch handling is absent.
Use the 550D controls
| Camera control | Doom action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move forward or back and turn |
| Hold zoom in (+) | Run |
| Hold zoom out (-) with left or right | Strafe |
| SET | Fire; confirm in menus |
| PLAY | Use doors and switches |
| Rear wheel | Choose the previous or next weapon |
| DISP (called INFO internally by Magic Lantern) | Open the automap; go back in menus |
| MENU | Open or close the Doom menu |
ISO, depth-of-field and shutter buttons are intentionally unused. Canon may handle those below the module input layer, causing camera overlays or autofocus behavior, or preventing the game from receiving the controls.

What a camera Doom port needs to work
A Doom engine is only one part of a camera port. It also needs a camera-specific layer that connects the game to the hardware and returns the camera to a usable state afterward.
- Execution and memory: The camera needs a way to load and run the program, enough usable memory for the engine and game state, and a build that matches its processor and firmware environment. The SD1000 implementation, for example, loads a standalone binary into an idle raw-image buffer during playback and compiles for ARMv5TE; that is an implementation detail, not a general camera requirement.
- Display: The port must render to the camera’s screen buffer and account for its resolution, pitch and palette. Doom550D documents its bitmap and VRAM assumptions and calls out palette restoration. The SD1000 port also works with a limited palette and an 8-bit overlay.
- Input: Physical buttons and wheels need mappings for movement, turning, firing, menus and key release. Camera firmware can intercept button events before the game receives them.
- Storage: The port must locate the IWAD and handle configuration and saves reliably. Doom550D keeps game data, configuration and saves in separate directories and documents save-compatibility checks.
- Audio, if supported: A port needs an audio output path and timing appropriate to the camera. Doom550D uses camera audio output and an AdLib-like software synthesizer, not cycle-accurate OPL2 emulation. The SD1000 port has no sound; its project notes describe exploratory reverse engineering.
- Safe exit and repeat starts: The game needs to restore display, input and audio state when it exits and handle errors without leaving the camera unusable. Doom550D documents cleanup behavior and a camera-side testing checklist.

PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70 with CHDK
The sd1000-doom project documents a playable port for the 2007 Canon PowerShot SD1000, also sold as the IXUS 70. It uses CHDK without flashing or modifying Canon firmware. Its prebuilt setup calls for firmware 1.02a, CHDK 1.6 for that exact target, a bootable card no larger than 2 GB formatted in-camera, and a standard shareware DOOM1.WAD. It boots in playback mode and launches from CHDK’s Games menu. The project reports a camera test dated 2026-06-27.

The developer describes the game as playable and snappy, but provides no numeric frame-rate benchmark. The implementation uses an idle 8 MB raw buffer and a 481 KB flat binary, along with an SD1000-specific palette and button map. The project says other CHDK-supported DIGIC III cameras may be adaptable, but memory addresses, buffer size, palette and controls need camera-specific work; that is not a promise that the existing binary will run on them.
Historical DigitaOS cameras
A much older DOOMD.CAM route is documented for compatible late-1990s Kodak and other DigitaOS cameras. The documentation excludes the Kodak DC220 for insufficient RAM and specifies firmware 1.0.4 or later for the Kodak DC290. These caveats do not establish that compatible downloads or a convenient setup are readily available today.

What is known about performance
Doom550D’s README calls version 0.4.1 “the best playable build tested so far.” That is the project’s qualitative description, not a measured frame rate or independent benchmark. The SD1000 project likewise describes its game as playable and snappy without publishing an FPS figure. Performance can therefore be described only in those project-attributed terms; a general numeric claim is not established.
