You can play Blu-ray and DVD movies on an Xbox Series X edition that has an optical disc drive. First check that your console is a drive-equipped model; Microsoft also sells an all-digital Series X that cannot read movie discs. Then follow Xbox’s current on-console or official support instructions for movie playback.
Check whether your Xbox Series X has a disc drive
Microsoft lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive on the Carbon Black and Galaxy Black Xbox Series X models. Its product page also lists an all-digital 1TB Robot White edition, which has no optical drive. If you are unsure which model you own, inspect the console for a disc slot or check the exact model listing before troubleshooting a disc. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page identifies the editions and their optical-drive specifications.
Start Blu-ray or DVD playback
On a drive-equipped console, insert the movie disc and follow the prompts shown on the Xbox. For current instructions, use Xbox Support’s “Watch Blu-ray and DVD movies on your Xbox console” guidance. The exact app prompt or installation sequence can change, so use the current console screen and support directions rather than relying on an outdated menu path.
If the disc will not play
Confirm the hardware and condition of the disc
- Verify that your Series X is a drive-equipped edition; an all-digital model cannot read a physical disc.
- As basic troubleshooting, check the disc for dirt, scratches, or other visible damage and try a clean, undamaged disc if available. These are general checks, not a guarantee that a particular disc format is supported.
Check disc and Blu-ray settings
Xbox Support provides a “Disc and Blu-ray settings” page. Consult its current guidance if playback produces an error or a setting appears relevant. Microsoft’s published 4K UHD Blu-ray drive specification does not establish that every disc format or region will play.

For a region-related error
Check the disc packaging and Xbox’s current support information for the disc’s region compatibility. Microsoft documents a console country or region setting under Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location, followed by Restart now. That setting changes the console’s location; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that changing it unlocks a region-coded movie disc. See Microsoft’s location-setting instructions.
Choosing a Series X for movie discs
If you are buying a console specifically to play Blu-ray or DVD movies, confirm that the listing is for a drive-equipped Xbox Series X. The decisive distinction is physical drive versus all-digital: Microsoft lists 4K UHD Blu-ray drives for Carbon Black and Galaxy Black editions and separately lists an all-digital Robot White edition. Check the exact model in the listing, since the Series X name alone does not guarantee a disc drive.
