For most launchers, offline play must be set up while connected, and it works only if the game itself supports offline play. Sign in, update the game, launch it online at least once, and enable the launcher’s offline mode before disconnecting.
Why the launcher may still require sign-in
A launcher’s offline mode does not guarantee that every game in its library can start without internet. The game may require a live connection, use a separate launcher, or need an initial online launch to finish setup. Offline access can also have a time limit. The steps therefore depend on both the launcher and the specific game.
Prepare the game before disconnecting
- While online, sign in to the launcher and make sure it has saved your credentials. If you use Steam, check “Remember me” when signing in.
- Install available launcher and game updates. Start the game online at least once so it can complete any additional setup or first-run checks.
- Check the official instructions for your exact game and launcher to confirm that the game supports offline play and whether any online features or cloud saves will be unavailable.
- Use the launcher’s own offline option while still online, then disconnect and try starting the game.
Steam: set up Offline Mode before going offline
Valve’s instructions are to sign in online with “Remember me” checked, fully update the game, launch it once to check for additional setup, and then select Steam > Go Offline. See Steam Support’s Offline Mode instructions.
If Steam is already requiring a login and will not accept saved credentials, Valve says, “If the Steam client is requiring a login, there is no option to bypass that without going online.” You will need an internet connection to sign in and set up offline mode. Steam Offline Mode also will not make a game work if that title requires an active connection or an external launcher.

EA app: first launch online, with a 30-day window
EA says to launch a game online at least once, then choose the app’s Go offline option. Only games that do not require an internet connection can be played this way. EA states that a game works offline for 30 days from its last online launch; this is EA’s rule, not a general limit for other launchers. Closing the app returns it to online mode the next time you use it. See EA Help’s instructions for downloading and playing games in the EA app.
Other launchers: check the exact game’s requirements
Offline support varies by title and may depend on a patch or come with feature limitations. For example, Ubisoft says Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora supports offline mode after the mandatory day-one patch. Ubisoft’s distinct offline mode for The Crew 2 keeps offline and online saves separate and makes multiplayer, leaderboards, user-generated content, and other online systems unavailable. These examples do not establish the rules for every Ubisoft game. Check the current official support page or store listing for your specific title before disconnecting.

If you are already stuck at the sign-in screen
- Connect the PC to the internet and sign in through the official launcher; then complete the preparation steps for that launcher and game.
- If you cannot get online, check the game’s official support information for a supported offline sign-in or recovery process. If the launcher requires online authentication and has no prepared offline state, there may be no supported way to launch it until you reconnect.
- Do not assume that changing network settings will help when the game requires a live connection or a second launcher. Offline mode cannot remove those requirements.
