To play a cozy life-sim with friends on Steam, first confirm that the game supports the kind of multiplayer your group wants, then check its player limit, host requirements, platform compatibility, and any per-player setup. In Stardew Valley, one player hosts a shared farm, each visiting friend needs a cabin, and the host must stay in-game. Palia is a different option: its Steam listing identifies it as free to play, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer.
Choose a game that matches how your group wants to play
“Multiplayer” can mean several different things: friends may share one working world, visit one another’s spaces, or meet in an online world. Those modes are not interchangeable. Before scheduling a session, look for the exact game’s multiplayer mode and confirm that it supports your group’s platforms.

For Palia, Steam describes the game as a free-to-play fantasy life-sim and lists it as Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Those labels make it a useful alternative if your friends use different platforms, but check the current listing and your platform’s requirements before you commit to a session.
Host or join a Stardew Valley co-op farm
Stardew Valley is a clear example of host-led co-op: one player runs the farm session, and the others join that player’s world. ConcernedApe’s official multiplayer explainer gives the co-op limit as up to four players.

- Open the Co-op menu. At the title screen, select Co-op. The host can start a new co-op farm or host an existing save; friends choose the hosted farm to join or enter an invite code when available. See the official multiplayer instructions.
- Provide a cabin for each joining friend. When creating a co-op farm, cabins can be selected as part of setup. To add cabins to an existing farm, have Robin build them. The Stardew Valley Wiki also documents cabins and multiplayer setup.
- Join through Steam if needed. On Steam for PC, the hosted farm may appear on the Co-op join screen. If it does not, the wiki suggests sending a Steam invite from the in-game options menu.
- Keep the host in the game. This is a player-hosted farm, not a world that continues independently: the official explainer says the host must be in-game whenever the group wants to play.
- Decide how to handle money. The official explainer describes a shared money pool alongside shared world state, while each player keeps a private inventory and individual skills, relationships, quests, and recipes. The wiki notes that new saves can configure whether players share a wallet, so agree on the setting that suits your group.
Check platform compatibility before inviting friends
Having a Steam version does not automatically mean a game supports cross-platform play. The Stardew Valley Wiki says multiplayer between platforms is unsupported, with an exception among some PC versions, including Windows and macOS. Check the exact versions your group plans to use rather than assuming that a Steam copy can join a console or other platform.
Palia differs: its Steam listing explicitly labels it Cross-Platform Multiplayer and says a Palia account is required. For Disney Dreamlight Valley, Gameloft’s support page says that players on all platforms can visit one another’s Valleys and participate in DreamSnaps together, as of the August 21, 2024 Dapper Delights update. That describes those social features; it is not evidence of shared co-op progression.

Troubleshoot a friend who cannot join
- The farm is missing from the join list: Confirm that the host has opened the farm, then try a Steam invite through the in-game options menu.
- Your friend cannot enter the farm: Check that the farm has a cabin for that player. A multiplayer invitation alone does not replace the cabin requirement.
- The host is offline or has left the game: The host-led Stardew farm is only available while its host is in-game.
- You are using different platforms: Verify compatibility for the exact game and versions. Stardew’s cross-platform support is limited; Palia’s Steam listing explicitly advertises cross-platform multiplayer.
- You are unsure whether the feature is co-op or visiting: Check what players can actually do together. Valley visiting in Disney Dreamlight Valley, for example, should not be treated as proof of unrestricted shared-world play.
What to compare before choosing
- Shared world or visits: Will everyone work on one farm, or will players visit another person’s space?
- Host availability: Must one friend be online and in-game for the world to be accessible?
- Group setup: What is the player limit, and does each friend need a cabin or other space?
- Platform support: Can everyone join from the platform and game version they own?
- Accounts and online access: Does the game require a separate account or broadband connection? The Steam listing for Palia says a Palia account and broadband internet are required.
